BMW EfficientDynamics : Watch out Toyota/Lexus...
To make it simple, “EfficientDynamics” is BMW’s concept to overcome the apparent conflict of interests between better performance, on the one hand, and greater fuel economy, on the other WITHOUT the use of a hybrid powertrain.

Instead, BMW will focus on optimizing its cars all-round in every respect -while it continues to work on Hydrogen though. BMW will accomplish this by equipping its car with technologically advanced petrol & diesel engines, by making them lighter (e.g BMW M3’s 420Hp 4.0 V8 engine is 12 kg lighter than the current 343Hp 3.2 R6) and more aerodynamic and most importantly, by improving energy management and hybridisation with the use of various components and concepts ranging from the Auto Start Stop Function via Brake Energy Regeneration all the way to the integration of an additional electric motor in an active transmission.

But unlike Toyota/Lexus Hybrid-powertrain tech which is only available to certain models, “EfficientDynamics” will make its appearance on every single BMW starting off with the facelifted 1-Series & 5-Series (3-Series and MINI models following later on this year). Thus meaning that systems like “Start & Stop” and “Brake Energy Regeneration” will be standard from the basic 116i & MINI ONE up to the next-gen M3 and the 760iL.

As BMW exec’s pointed out to me, apart from the energy management and hybridisation systems, this isn’t a first for BMW. For example, the much larger, safer, faster and luxurious 2007 320i consumes almost one-quarter less fuel than its predecessor did in 1982 while the 2007 525i asks for 30% less fuel than its 80’s ancestor. Therefore, what’s the fuss all about? While all these facts are true and albeit BMW is going to focus much more on technologies that’ll significantly reduce consumption and CO2, thing is that they had to find a way to market it, to make people say I want a BMW not only cause it’s sporty, sexy etc but also because its eco-friendly. EfficientDynamics is that way.

BMW is developing a hybrid powertrain, in coordination with DaimlerChrysler and GM.

they're not going to call them hybrids.
they're simply extremely efficient gasoline powerplants.

Why are they comparing to model 2 decades ago? I would hope the current models are more efficient without the EfficientDynamicsthan the models in the 1980's.

Wow, BMW's engines are more efficient and pwerful than in the past. This is incredible news. Forget hybrids, all a mfr has to do is build better engines each time they are updated. Stop the presses, what a great concept. Toy/Lex is screwed, because they didnt know this.

Ummmmmm.....Isn't this a mere concept? In all honesty this is still BMW we're talking about. I have respect for "beamer", but from a reliability perspective I wouldn't be too excited to purchase one with even more unreliable technology. It's been proven that car companies can engineer technolgy that works, but for how long will it work?

"I have respect for "beamer", but from a reliability perspective I wouldn't be too excited to purchase one with even more unreliable technology."

Is reliability all the Lexus fans think about?!

My wife didn't get hers only because of the reliability!

BTW... five or six BMWs and five or six Audis are "Recommended" by Consumer Reports.

Rejoice BMW fanboys, rejoice.

"Efficient dynamics" is here to accompany the legendary "Magic Feel"

Well isn't this an example of technology advancement. I mean all manufacturers have made their cars bigger and consume less fuel generally.

Wait I get it, I do. This is great because it is in a BMW. Damn, where had my brain been. BTW, I don't think Toyota has anything to worry about from this new technology which BMW has developed.

it is one of the least interesting technologies in a bmw. agreed.

as long as it doesn't in any way take away from performance, i'm fine with it.

I hate to say this, but when dealing with the internal combustion engine any changes in efficiency that you can get would be relatively minor. There is a limit to the effciency of such systems. As I recall it has something to do with the input and output temperatures and some other parameters; it has been a while. The point is that any increases in efficiency are incremental not fundamental. I don't think BMW will be attempting to make an engine out of cermaics any time soon.

It is good, I suppose, that they are trying something.

I officially understand the "title engineering" the German fans were complaining about now.

"But unlike Toyota/Lexus Hybrid-powertrain tech which is only available to certain models, “EfficientDynamics” will make its appearance on every single BMW starting off with the facelifted 1-Series & 5-Series (3-Series and MINI models following later on this year). This simply is PR ammo being fed to the BMW faithful to make them believe that their cars are somehow just as efficient as hybrids.

And who says Toyota/Lexus is the only company good at marketing! ;)

agree with S4.
it's not an attempt to keep those of us who already love BMWs.

it's an attempt to sway some of the people who would choose a 'performance hybrid' from lexus because of efficiency concerns to a BMW.

doesn't in any way affect my personal choice to drive one.

This is the EU Emission Laws doing. BMW needs to average 140g/km of CO2 on their cars, and that's hard when you make sports cars. The efficient dynamics have reduced CO2 levels substantially (around 15g/km on each car)

Ever heard of the Toyota Hybrid Sport-Concept car with 400 hp for under $40K? If BMW can top that performance and for the same price than we talk.

Hmm. Where did you hear of any 400hp supercar for under $40,000? I didn't.

Are you talking about the FT-HS Concept? That will be well over $40,000 if it goes into production.

If hybrid is for loser, so why did BMW announce couple of weeks ago that they will make a hybrid? hmmmmm and also last week I belief they ran into some trouble in how to make a hybrid.

That proof Japanese technology is superior German, same with the quality and realibility of the Japanese vechicles.

Good, shoot him down. We hate him, too.

But...

"hmmmmm and also last week I belief they ran into some trouble in how to make a hybrid."

This actually wasn't very true. Mostly fabricated.

"That proof Japanese technology is superior German, same with the quality and realibility of the Japanese vechicles."

All I hear are the same words, every day. "QUALITY" and "RELIABILITY." You know how tired I am of hearing that dribble?

Please, define "quality" and prove to me why Japanese cars are higher-"quality" than their German competitors in fifty words or less.

Why shouldn't BMW start playing the "efficiency" game? Of course no BMW owner cares about owning a hybrid, but that doesn't mean the company is allowed to improve their products. BMW has taken one aspect of hybrid technology and applied it to their philosophy of cars. A little bit of positive without any negative sounds good to me.
