BMW has been a firm that, in recent years, has come under high scrutiny.

The new X6, 5-Series GT and growing Motorsports division have all been justifiable reasons for this questioning, but in a recent Auto Motor und Sport interview with Adrian van Hooydonk, he opens up about BMW's future.

mid 20s? what are you talking about? NEVER going to happen.

starting at mid 30s would be a bargain next to the Z4-which rockets up to $70k with options.

mid 20's base for a BMW...that's way to cheap. Kinda takes away from what little prestige is left with the brand name. They need to make it a quality product, price it accordingly, and not give it away with their cheap leases.

what the heck does bmw have to do with prestige? they are known for their cool cars not monacles and ascots.

if i was looking for prestige i'd...well if i was looking for prestige, i hope i'd hope to have good enough friends that one of them would kick me dead in the ass.

"what little prestige is left"

this does not align with facts. please explain why BMW is able to charge vastly more than competitive cars from audi, lexus and infiniti (and in the some cases even mercedes).

Although we all have become used to BMW's Bangle-butts and Van Hooydonk's guppie-eye'd front ends and saggy-looking doors -- It's nice to see a BMW that one can lust after again. Beautiful!

BMW's recent strategy with model proliferation seems to be to throw every imaginable configuration at the wall and see what sticks.

Its a very expensive (and wrongheaded) way to sell niche products (and I claim anything not 3,5,7 or X3,X5, is niche).

unique, niche products are precisely what enables BMW to charge significant premiums over competitors. buyers of luxury cars won't pay premium prices if 16 of their neighbors are going to have the identical cars. that's why there are more than a dozen versions of the 3-series alone.

BMW just released the first 7 series with AWD too. They are hitting walls though very quickly. The pricing of BMW has gotten so that you are so far out of the market range that their cars are not priced to match the competition. Meaning you can get a BMW for a low $30,000 tag, but until you add in the options to make it a TRUE luxury car (HIDs, leather, heated seats, etc.) you are looking at a car that has a $10-15,000 price jump.

The 3 series kept going up and up and they had to bring the 1 series to cover the old 3's base market. Even the 1 came out at a higher price point than most expected. The market was thinking we would see something in the top $20's that would be optioned up when going from 128 to 135 of course. But that didn't happen.

The X3 has moved up to the point they now have to release the X1 to cover that old base. And now the Z4 which still is not as sexy as an original M-roadster or Z3 with the flowing panels, needs a Z2 to cover.

Instead of releasing more new models, they are releasing cars to help them cover the gaps they keep creating by their price points.
