Sorry but the British aren't the best car manufacturers regardless of badge. Every British car I've ever owned has been absolute crap when it came to QA/QC.

You know some of you keep throwing around the word Nazi and doing comparisons about how BMW is acting like some Nazis without much regard with what that actually means historically. First of all, stop being so callous (lexus hag, I hope you can use such big words) as you have no concept of what National Socializm was truely about and what it did to people who lived through it or fought against it both outside of Germany and those within. Unless you had relatives exterminated in Aushwitz or suffered at the hands of the brutal Nazi regime shut the f#@*ing up! Such insensitivity and outright bigotry should not be condoned by the administrators of this website and some of you should banned for using such comparative ignorant and uneducated comments. So please show some respect towards those whose relatives lived through the Nazi era. Toyota is not immune in its record of support of the brutal Japanese during WWII as the Quandts aren't either during WWII as supporters of the National Socialist party and Hitler.

@ Viso. In you're fervor to clear up responsibility for war time atrocities you forgot to add the little side note about how we interned thousands of Japanese Americans during the war. Some of the whom went on to fight and die for this country while their parents and siblings were still in the camps. BMW's never been known to have a heart, and they've shown us that again.
It's understandable that a company facing tough times has to lay off workers, but the manner in which Bmw has done it is just pathetic and disgraceful.
Have a spine BMW, and give some advance notice to the workers so they can find some other job at the very least.

So, what's the big deal about this and why is it making headlines? This is how employees are laid off at just about every other Fortune 500 company I've worked for, i.e. with little or no advanced notice. They're lucky they weren't escorted out. Companies don't give advance notice because of the chance that an employee may do something malicious like steal, delete or sabotage. Moreover, companies have even less of an obligation with contract/temp employees because that's the whole point of them in the first place--flexibility for the employer.

Well if you are in my Banana Republic, if want to fire me, you´ll have to tell me that, 15 days before or pay me the salary of 15 days, beside that, ís mandatory to pay proportional vacations: 1 day off with pay for 11 woked days, in other words, one month of vacations every 11 moths worked, plus my salary till the moment that you fire me....In my country if the do something like, the govermet will make them pay and that will be very painful, were all big companies have their heart, in the pocket. I hate unions but the are necesary to keep the balance. Sadly what I see is a lot of big companies in Bankruptcy that will use that as an excuse to close operations in the current car manufacturers countries and moving their operations to China, India or any country that do not protect the workers and they get cheaper labor. Is just matter of time, that will bring us, around the world a nightmare, in fact right now we are just dreaming....Obama is right, but even with his good intentions, He won´t be able to fight against the unmeasured greed of so many rich people, same in Germany or even England.
