BMW 'M' to use hybrid in the long-term
We’ve previously heard that that BMW’s M division is considering V6 turbocharged engines for future M models to cut CO2 emissions. Well, now BMW M GmbH is reportedly considering hybrid-drive in the long-term. Currently, output of conventional combination of a gasoline-engine and electric motor is still too low for the high-performance division to put into production models.

According to BMW M GmbH head of development Albert Biermann, BMW is looking to transfer over the technology it will start using in its Formula 1 cars in the 2009 season called KERS. KERS, which stands for Kinetic Energy Recovery System, has a hybrid module consisting of an electric motor, generator and a battery.

The hybrid module is said to be five times smaller...

I'm sure they are considering turbocharged INLINE six's, but not V6's. EGMCartech should know their brands better.

You got that right, there will never be a BMW V6. I'd like to see an electric powered turbocharger on an inline 6, that would be a hybrid worthy of an M badge.

I'd agree that they would pursue I6 for heritage reasons, but there are compelling reasons to use a V6 in a performance oriented car.

1. It allows for a slightly shorter engine block which allows the center of gravity to be moved back.
2. If a 90 degree V is used then the turbo can be mounted between cylinder banks which also helps with weight distribution and packaging.
3. Not that they would do it but they could implement cylinder deactivation more easily with a V6 design. Simply one camshaft would have to be held in place in order to deactivate three of the cylinders for cruise.

No V8 or V10??? I wonder if they can mimic the feeling, passion, and sound you get from having a big engine under the hood?

v8 and v10 are very recent additions to the M lineup.

M has traditionally been about high-output inline 6s paired with a phenomenal chassis/suspension.

a V6? doubt it. inlines have been the heart of the brand for decades.

This article is wrong, BMW is not using KERS which is a entirely mechanical regenerative system. There system does use a electric motor and generator, but is not KERS.

You are correct: "The KERS system, represents a system developed specifically for F1 based on a combination of existing and proprietary technologies by Torotrak, Xtrac and Flybrid. The result is a package that weighs in at under 24kg, requires only 13L of space and generates the maximum allowed boost of 60kW, with a total of 400kJ. The purely mechanical KERS system uses a highly sophisticated steel and carbon fibre flywheel encased in a vacuum to store energy taken from the car’s motion as kinetic energy."

I hope the next generation of Ms lose a lot of weight, have more of a differnt design than non M models, and have high strung high output smaller dispalcement engines than todays Ms.Also please bmw make the Ms more about driving rather than 10 million electronic settings which dont work.

Driving is the last thing BMW buyers have in mind. BMW is catering to what their market research tells them. Pretty soon they won't even bother offering stickshifts.

Their next engineering marvel will be to show the world their M3 can get more power from a V10 as opposed to a V8.

BMW has the tag line in Europe: "Sheer Driving Pleasure"

and in the US: "The Ulimate Driving Machine"

"Driving" is exactly what we have in mind.

You are either on another planet or just a troll.
