BMW Plans Major Expansion Of US Assembly Plant

BMW Manufacturing Co. will throw a party on Monday to announce a major expansion at its Spartanburg County plant. The Herald-Journal first reported on the company's plans in February. The official announcement will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Zentrum.

BMW Manufacturing spokesman Bobby Hitt would not reveal any details.

“We've sent out invitations to several hundred business and political leaders,” Hitt said. “We'll make an announcement (on Monday) about an additional investment in our plant.”

The expansion is part of BMW's plan for the plant to produce 240,000 vehicles a year by 2012. The factory is expected to build between 160,000 and 170,000 vehicles this year. It achieved its record production in 2003, when it cranked out 166,000 vehicles.

More likely to accommodate the weak dollar.

LOL, let's hope so, but I'm not so sure...the public reaction to the X6 has been mixed, so it may not warrant the volume. But BMW has plenty of other model introductions coming up, so they could probably soak up that capacity with these others.

right, as well as the next-generation of X3 and diesel versions of the X5

Plus, aren't they planning a redesign on the Z-Series?

BMW has already announced that Z production would move to Germany for the next model. It is my understanding that Spartanburg will build the X models exclusively. We'll get the final say on Monday.

Let's have some sales statistics. I want to see the numbers. While you are looking those up, look up BMWs sales figures for North America.

obama can u plz explain why BMW is catching up to lexus? I like lexus but recently they have not put out any products that shine out exceptionally over the competition like the is-f most of there cars are just at par with the competition nothing too amazing(except the ls460 cause for its price it is quite good compared to competition). The IS is not as fun as the 3 series but you are probably right about it being more comfortable.

Drop deap already you retard. Nobody said anything about Lexus. Why are you even in this post?

'Lexus owns the luxury and sport market.'

Lexus owns the sport market, huh? You are a liar and an idiot.

You are easily the dumbest person on this website. Like i told you before, if you really want Obama to get elected, you should dissociate yourself from him. You are not doing him any favors. Nobody would want to be aligned with a moron like you.

Good Lord, your lack of knowledge about cars is staggering. Lets take a look at a few of you statements.

The IS is already stealing a lot of 3 series drivers because it is sportier and more comfortable FALSE.
-The 3er continues to outsell the IS almost 4 to 1
-Sportier. FALSE name one publications the says that.

It(IS) has won many awards for quality and driving performance and dynamics.
-FALSE, once again name one in fact the 3er has bested the IS in every comparison test.

Consumer Reports recommends the Lexus IS over the 3 series.
-FALSE both cars are on Consumer Reports recommendation list.

Carp on about BMW as much as you want but get a least one fact right.

X cars sell here. It only took the US depressing their dollar to get the cheapskate Germans to make move jobs overseas.

fastone,
Japanese build cars where they sell them, Germans build them next door where its cheaper.

Toyota/Lexus = 12 billion profits.
BMW = stagnation and competing with Corollas now.
