BMW Potpourri! The New M3 Coupe in The Flesh
Within the BMW M GmbH model range, the BMW M3 has always been that very special model living up in full to its motorsport heritage. Indeed, this already applied to the very first BMW M3 launched in 1986 and continued throughout the two subsequent model generations. And now this supremacy comes out once again most clearly in the 2007 version of the BMW M3.

Although the latest generation of the BMW M3 was based in its development on the new BMW M3 Coupé, the new high-performance model differs from the "regular" coupé in terms of both looks and technical features. Apart from the car's unique design as well as its drivetrain and suspension technology conceived from the start for supreme performance, lightweight technology came right at the top in the brief given to the engineers at BMW M. And just how consistently this development target has been translated into reality in terms of intelligent lightweight engineering is borne out by the car's power-to-weight ratio of only 3.8 kg (8.4 lb) per horsepower.

One of the reasons for this low weight is that the new BMW M3 is the first production car in its segment to boast a roof made of carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFP). And in all, the new BMW M3, with the exception of just a few components, is indeed completely new in its engineering and design concept, clearly reflecting the successful tradition of BMW M GmbH.

Apart from the load-bearing structure of the car, only the two doors, the bootlid, the windows, the headlights and rear lights have been carried over from the 3 Series Coupé. All other body components, by contrast, were specially developed for the new BMW M3.

The unique character of the new BMW M3 is obvious at first sight: Over and above the engine compartment lid with its striking powerdome and the two air intake openings, the function-oriented design of the front and rear air dams, the so-called gills in the front side panels, the side-sills also in distinctive design, the roof made of clearly visible carbon fibre, as well as the exterior mirrors and light-alloy wheels in BMW M design clearly characterise the new model from the ground up. The exterior, in turn, through its athletic and aesthetic appearance, powerfully underlines the sporting qualities of the car.

The exterior paintwork likewise adds an individual touch, offering the connoisseur not only numerous additional colours, but also four special paintwork options exclusive to BMW M.

Little touches really define this car. Hood vents are nice and those are some of the best side mirrors ever. Also love the roof and the finish on the wheels.

Now lets see one in black please!

kool car and love the paint.
well i have a few questions i would b very happy if sum1 cud answer it
1)how is a cars speed electronically limited??
2)how can the limiter be removed?
3)what decides a cars top speed. i mean the flying spur and the continental gt do the same speed and a gallardo with less weight goes abit slower.
4)why if 599gtb and the mc12 have the same enzo engine, they produce different power with enzo producing the highest.
5)a 6.5lt lambo(LP640) produces 640hp (or 632 for sake of argument) and a 7.3lt AMG(zonda) produces 604hp(or 610 for sake of arg.). If thats the case, whats the big deal about an AMG??

1) the ECM monitors all aspects of the car usually (including speed) all it does is limit the throttle to prevent it from going faster (the ECM can override your foot)

2) usually there are aftermarket companies that can reprogram the ECM to ignore this limiter

3) usually German companies have a "gentleman's agreement" to limit their cars to 155-mph even though some can go faster. Car's top speed (without a limiter) is usually a factor of physics (weight, aerodynamics, engine, etc.)

4) this is mainly engineering related. Different exhaust systems can increase horsepower, different transmissions have different amounts of power loss. The more efficient (like the Enzo) the better

5) AMG is known for the insanely large engines which usually results in some ungodly torque and straight line acceleration that people have trouble matching. Some people, myself included, like that :)

Threepoint1415926Threepoint1415926 - 4/5/2007 3:16:39 PM
+1 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
1) Cars are usually limited by a throttle cut or retarded timing.
2) Usually with a chip from a tuner or a "pretty please" to the manufacture.
3) Top speed is determined by either Gearing (Engine hits rev limiter in top gear), Aerodynamics (Zero acceleration before rev limiter is achieved. Force of friction is equal to force provided by the drive train) or Electronically (as above).
4) Specific outputs depend on fluid dynamics, timing, fuel, friction and weight (specifically inertia). Any one of those things can be changed to shoehorn a motor into a compartment. Generally when the same base engine is used in different cars, marketing departments determine HP ratings not engineering departments.
5) AMG is a big deal for many reasons. Though many Bavarian folk used to (and now even more people have joined in) make a big deal about specific output, the "proof is in the pudding" for lack of a better term. Any time someone points out a lack of specific output, I point them squarely at the push-rod LS7 motor and its power, weight, size, fuel consumption and reliability.

TheSailorTheSailor - 4/6/2007 8:42:03 AMView My AgentSpace
+2 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
1)As it is mentioned, the speed is controlled by the engine control unit. In a modern car, the ECU determines everything from throttle position to how fast the engine revs. So even though you might think you are the one opening the throttle by pressing the speeder, actually you only request the ECU to do so. This means that the ECU can also deny further throttle, which is basically what it does once you hit the 250 km/h limit. An M5 for example will easily break 300 km/h if it is de limited.

2)All of the three germans will remove the limiter if you ask them, so will several aftermarket companies, but this can result in void of warranty. What they do is that they simply reprogram the ECU to not deny further throttle at 250 km/h.

3)Top speed is determined by the amount of aerodynamic drag, rolling friction in the drivetrain and between the wheels and road and the weight of the car. The higher the speed, the more influence the aerodynamic forces has. That is why a car with 400 hp will reach 300 km/h but the Veyron need 1001 to reach 400 km/h. If the aerodynamic drag is doubled, the necessary power to reach a similar speed increases 8 times! The ratio for extra power to reach twice the speed in the same car is even greater.

4) The output of an engine is (in theory) determined by one single factor: The amount of fuel you can burn in a second. Hp and kW are to different ways of meassuring energy pr second, kW are Joule pr second. This means that the more energy you can convert from the chemical energy in fuel to mechanical energy in the engine (by igniting it) in a second, the higher the output! But the fuel can only burn if there is sufficient oxygen present, the more air, the more fuel you can burn (hence the use of forced induction). In real life there are lots of other factors that influence final output, but those are hard to alter, therefore, the purpose of all the different tuning equipment you can get is to force more fuel and more air into the engine pr. combustion.
In case of the 599 vs Enzo vs MC12, the same engine is fitted with different air intakes and headers meaning that the amount of air that can flow to the engine is altered. Furthermore, the ECU is also adjusted to inject less fuel per cycle meaning less power. The reason for this is probably that Ferrari didn't want neither the MC12 or the 599 to be as powerful as the Enzo and that the 599 would need to be more durable.

5) The reason why AMG engines are so famous in some circles is the way they deliver power. They have huge amounts of torque, meaning that you get lots of power even at very low revs. This means that you get a very agressive acceleration right from a standstill. The "problem" with an engine like the one in the M3 is that it is small displacement and very highrevving but it doesn't deliver a whole lot of torque, meaning that you need lots of revs to achieve the same acceleration as you get very easily with an AMG engine. Lots of engines are better at what

...they do than the AMG engines, but the AMG engine is unbeatable from stoplight to stoplight or for autobahn cruising where you want easily available power at all times.

ricemaster, i actually wouldn't describe the bmw as a luxury sedan. though it is often classified as such.

and if your buying the m3 to be the best handling car ever, you'll be disapointed. it rides on a far more civil suspension geometry than a real sports car. and yes, it is a compromise.

but true sports cars barely even exist anymore. everything has power seats, super-stereos, electronic-assisted this and that.

the m3 is able to offer an amazing compromise in sport and comfort. it is not the sportiest car, or the most luxurious, but few cars are able to offer as much of both for the price while maintaining daily drivability.

i live in a region of the u.s. where a sports car can only be a 2nd car. you'd destroy any sports car on the winter roads in my area. though some might cringe at the thought, the m3 can be driven year round, even in new england.

i completely disagree with the notion that there exists sports cars and luxury cars, and anything in between is some disgrace to the auto industry. i will not likely ever own a pure luxury, and unfortunately a pure sports car. and there is a company i know of that offers an excellent blend of the two.

+1 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
I mean even the E46 M3 does 175 mph, and the M5/M6 do 200, so by comparing the power-to-weight ratio, and the fact that E92 has a Cd=0.28, while the E46 had Cd=0.3, i would bet on way more than 173 mph!

I'm actually considering the G37 for the price it costs. But if I had to choose between them for the same price, I'd be a fool to not pick the M3. Then you claim that the M3 is a luxury coupe not designed for the track? Why are they tested on the track against lamborghini, ferrari, porsche, NSX, etc...In fact, it is the only car that can fit 4 adults and still compete in the track with the rest of the supercars....Actually, lets throw in the M5 as well...Only BMW makes this happen! Ricemaster... Only guys with money get hot chicks (not really, but lets stay in your little universe)... Guys with ricer cars who cosider themselves "players" get chicks with gonorea or 40 lbs of excess fat... You want to be a player? Here is what you do: You rent a tux, rent a BMW, save up money for a few months, then you go to a night club (this probably mean that you will have to wait about 10 years until you turn 21), then you flash those 500 dollars you spent six months saving up and all those hot chicks will come running... They wont have the brain to spell their own name but you don't seem to care about that... But for god and everything holy sake, don't mention your riced out civic!

If you want to get the truly hot chicks that won't go "my father is my brother" you have to develop what is known as style (a thing ricers are definately not known for) and something called charm... Now those are the tools of the trade for the true player!

Anyway... Lets get back to cars instead of discussing how we can get RICEMASTER laid!

Fanboy3000, don't be so curious about what I was doing...you're starting to worry me too now...RS4, S6, and RS6 will handle themselves ok on the track mostly because of their AWD, but will be no match for the new BMW M Cars. E92 M3 will spank RS4 AND M5 will spank S6 and most likely the upcoming RS6 depending on its hp. Audi S lines basically need to have at least 100hp advantage to keep up with M cars. Example, what do you think will happen if E46 M3 and S4 raced on the track? 333hp vs 340hp...You know the answer. M3 without a doubt. Keep in mind, I also love Audi and their S lines, but this is how it is.

Ricemaster... This mouth feces you spew out is just incredible! I guess you didn't read about the Mdynamic system? It allows you to adjust the suspension from soft to incredibly punishing... Meaning that you can have a comfortable cruiser and a hardcore racecar in one and the same car! You don't get that with the G37... You get something inbetween... Not quite racer, not quite cruiser...

Also, you also expose your ignorance by telling everybody how the M3 rolls and the suspension is bad! The M3 have been rocognized by most auto journalists (even Jeremy Clarkson) as one of the best handling cars in the segment... Nothing short of a 911 will outhandle it (and the lower 911 models might even have a hard time doing that). Are you sure the car you drove wasn't a 318iS dressed up with an M3 kit, an aftermarket exhaust and one of those ridiculously low suspension kits? Because that will feel like the car you described! Judging by your name, that would be more likely than you getting near an M3!

I don't know how you determine dynamics, but I have seen times from several circuits where the standard M3 easily outpaced the 996 911 Carrera models, even the 4WD models (which was the one i was refering since it was the model available at the introduction)... The M3 did the Nurburgring in 8:22, the 996 C4S did it in 8:25...

And you know what? The 335 and M3 owners will still sit there with a smug expression on their face when they go past an Evo, NSX, S2000, GT-R, Vette or the kid in his modified Civic in a jam on the motorway! Yet, the M3 still has the ability to give the owner a fantastic experience on a track... As I said, that is the blessing of the dual nature.
Also, I find your analogy hillarious! You don't know how to cook? If you go to a restaurant it is like taking a cab! An expensive restaurant is a limo as opposed to driving yourself which would be cooking! The BMW is great tasting cousin... The cars you mentioned are all hotdogs and hamburgers... Easy to handle and they taste good, but they are very easy to grow tired off!
Furthermore, yes, i praise the Mdynamic system and i think it is a great innovation for this car... And that is exactly what it is: An INNOVATION! Go look it up... But that doesn't mean that the old car is bad! It is very good... But you can always make a good thing better! And what BMW have trying to do here is pretty obvious for anybody with a full deck of cards (another analogy for you)... They are trying to get rid of the very compromises you talk off... With new magnetorheological suspension technology, it is possible to adjust damping force almost infinately. Also, this system incorporates active steering and will probably incorporate advanced ESP, body roll control, adaptive braking etc. I
