BMW Reveals It's Vision Efficient Dynamics Hybrid-Diesel X5 Concept

Offering an insight into the future of BMW’s innovative EfficientDynamics technologies

The Geneva Motor Show (4 – 16 March) will mark the world premiere of the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics, a concept car designed to showcase the future direction of BMW’s performance enhancing and emissions lowering innovations. Mild ActiveHybrid technology is combined with a twin-turbocharged four-cylinder diesel engine, a new eight-speed automatic gearbox and even roof-mounted solar panels, and all shrouded in a BMW X5 body.

All of these technologies combine to deliver the best fuel economy and lowest emissions of any large 4×4 currently on sale. The BMW Vision EfficientDynamics delivers 43.5mpg on the combined cycle and just 172g/km of CO2 emissions. However, these frugal figures do not translate into low performance figures. With its twin-turbocharged two-litre diesel engine delivering more than 100hp per litre, the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics concept completes the sprint from zero to 62mph in just 8.9 seconds, a time faster than most current production competitors.

The 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel engine in the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics uses BMW’s Variable Twin Turbo concept, third-generation common-rail injection and an all aluminium crankcase to deliver 204hp and 400Nm of torque between 2,000 and 2,250rpm. The engine is supplemented by a mild hybrid concept that delivers a further 20hp and 210Nm of torque under acceleration. As a consequence, even though the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics features a relatively small capacity engine, it delivers nearly the same levels of horsepower as the conventional X5, but offers improvements in its already class-leading consumption and emissions figures.

The mild hybrid solution in the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics uses a compact generator that, for the first time, is flange mounted directly onto the gearbox. This motor produces up to 20hp of on-demand power. In addition, BMW’s now familiar Brake Energy Regeneration is used to efficiently capture energy that would previously have been lost when the engine is on overrun. Innovatively, the alternator is also integrated into the crankcase rather than conventionally driven from the front of the engine.

BMW’s concept uses highly efficient lithium-ion batteries in the boot area to store the power generated. These high-storage-capacity batteries enable optimum use of Brake Energy Regeneration. In addition, they create possibilities to power the air conditioning, electric coolant pump and the electric power steering system. For these functions, a 120 volt vehicle power system was designed and runs in parallel with the conventional 12 volt system.

The power harnessed by the batteries is also supplemented by roof mounted photovoltaic solar panels, measuring 1.0 metre square. The energy generated can either be used immediately or stored for later use. Importantly, the power created in this zero- CO2 way can be used to pre-heat the diesel fuel. The less efficient warm-up phase is thus shortened considerably.

This innovative and technologically advanced engine is directly mated to a new eight- speed automatic transmission. Developed jointly between BMW and ZF, the new gearbox delivers fast and efficient gear changes. With such a spread of gears, the car will always be in exactly the right ratio for the prevailing driving conditions. It also improves fuel consumption and minimises emissions.

The chassis and ride-height of the X5 have been adapted for the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics. This includes aerodynamically-efficient 19-inch light alloy wheels with reduced ventilation. The design of the spokes reduces wind resistance to the extent that, at 100mph, the car has to produce one horsepower less than a conventionally-wheeled car. This benefit has not been included in the fuel consumption calculations but, on the road, the impact is noticeable.

and, yes more efficiency. All this from a significantly smaller powerplant than would be necessary if gasoline powered.

Not to mention that a normal hybrid X5 (which will probably be coming anyway) would only get a miniscule fuel economy advantage over a gas-powered six-cylinder X5. This vehicle is WAY more efficient in both an engineering regard and in terms of fuel economy.

great... I love to see innovation. The only thing is BMW has to market its diesel-based products more in the US.

The concept is cool and all, but to me a hybrid SUV is as much an oxymoron as a Hybrid performance car... Isn't hybrids about saving fuel?! You don't save fuel if you drive a heavy SUV! Put it in a 1 or 3-series instead... That would make way more sence!

I'm sure they will, but for those that require a 7 seater or needs to carry around things, why not try to save fuel? I'm sure a 43mpg hybrid SUV is a lot more efficient than a 18mpg SUV. If you have to get a SUV, might as well get one that will get you further on one gallon of fuel.

Ofcause, but I think that the number of people who actually use their X5 to transport 7 people is very low! But ofcause, any saving is better than nothing... Maybe it's just because I have a general something against SUVs...

thats understandable, for I am a sport sedan and sports car kinda guy myself, who do not really understand those people who buys SUVs as a fad, instead of actually needing its capabilities...

You really don't have to drive a hybrid to know that diesel hybrids are a way better solution! I won't go as far as to say petrol hybrids suck, but they're really not as efficient and good a solution as diesel hybrids...

1970toyotamarc, are you serious? That was weak. Isn't it obvious?

I thought you were an advocate of new green technology, no matter who it comes from. So why are you trying to defend Toyota here when this technology is superior?

Rupert, I am afraid to break it to everyone, even diesel hybrids suck. If this gets 40+ mpg with the weight of the hybrid system, imagine what it could get if they left that dead weight at the curb!

1970toyotamarc1970toyotamarc - 2/22/2008 11:32:59 AM

Look, the future may include cleaner diesels mated to hybrid engines. Maybe, who knows. I still think that getting over emissions issues will be too great a hurdle, not to mention prohibitive costs. But my problem is not with the technology itself. In fact, I dont even have a huge problem with the cleaner diesel vehicles, (if and when they ever show up, and in the right application.) My problem is with fanboys and hybrid haters bashing every Toyota hybrid, then jumping with glee when a Euro brand says they have a diesel hybrid. We havent seen any of these diesel hybrids in a practical application, do not know their performance capabilities, their true mpg savings or their emissions. But all the Euro boys act like its the next coming when a mfr just brings out a concept. The gasoline hybrids are here, they are good, and they keep getting better. These concepts, pre-production vehciles, or whatever else you want to call them are still not ready for prime time.

I read about the electric motor mounted inside the transmission (to save weight and space) over a year ago (probably on this site), and it looks like it'll be reality with this car. This is an ingenious solution to make practically any car a hybrid without sacrificing the normal layout of drivetrain components. I wonder how BMW will compensate on their 50-50 balance with Li-Ion batteries in the back.

The world is bigger than 0-60... This has long been accepted in Europe and it looks like people in the US is starting to think so aswell! This fixation on 0-60 times is just stupid! How many soccer moms out there do you think care about smoking other soccermoms from stop light to stop light? They care about safety, equipment, looks and brand... And if they can say that their car is a hybrid and will do the same miles to the gallon as a Camry Hybrid (which can almost fit in the trunk of an X5), I think they'll be willing to satisfy a second or two... And it's even about as fast to 62.5 as the Camry hybrid is to 60, so the BMW wil probably be faster than the guzzling Camry... (8.9 to 62.5 vs 8.6 to 60)... That is pretty remarkable considering the extra seat row, all that extra room, all the luxury equipment and the fact THAT IT IS AN SUV!!!

And considering the number of people that bought a Prius with a 0-60 of 10.5 I think Americans worry less about acceleration than we think.

That is just about the most half assed attempt at an argument ever! The X5 is 300 kg heavier than the X5, 300 kg extra is alot to lug around! That is like filling up a car with the family and all their luggage and then expect the car to do the same mileage as without you!

Ohh... And via interpolation, you are an idiot! You can't just interpolate this sort of numbers and then expect to get a valid number! You have to compensate for the difference in torque to weight ratio, the extra weight has something to say and the fact that THEY HAVE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT POWER RATINGS (X5 3.0D is rated at 235 hp, the X3 3.0D at 218)!!! Nice try, but then again... Maybe not!

BTW: I still can't get past the fact that a 2075 kg SUV with a mild hybrid easily keeps up with the 400 kg lighter Camry hybrid... Both in fuel economy and acceleration!

Remember to wake me up when Toyota implements a competitive hybrid.

However, as Lexus often state, the hybrid power train does result in faster 0-60. A 2.0d X5 would be quite slow (as in 10 seconds plus), and also the engines are not the same - the X3 uses a single turbo 2.0 diesel, with about 170 hp - this hybrid has a 2.0 twin turbodiesel, with 204 hp.
I realise I have completely contradicted myself, but whatever.
8.9 - not slow
10 - slow in a luxury car.

Your comparison does show up somethign very interesting. Just by downsizing and saving weight, one can get equivalent performance and MPG to a larger hybrid.
This car is starting to make less sense - the 3.0 diesel X5 currently on sale does 0-60 in 8.0 seconds (quicker than this), gets 35 imperial mpg (compared with 43), and emits 214 g/km CO2 (vs 172). For thge expected cost of the X5 hybrid, to me the 3.0d is a much better bet, and if you want better performance, the 3.0sd (twin turbo), gets the 34 MPG, 216 g/km CO2 and does 0-60 in under 7 seconds. Why bother with this hybrid with a 2.0d?
