I expected BMW would limit the switchover to its family-oriented sedans, not to mention its diesels.

if we limit it to V6's, then the answer is "anyone who has ever bought an Infiniti G37 or M35, Acura RL, Nissan GT-R, Mercedes C350, E350, S350, etc." If we open it up to all 6-cylinders, then you can include a whole mess of BMW's, Porsche's, etc. So... lot of people would (and have) paid more than $40k for a six pot.

Who edits these submissions and headlines? BMW doesn't do V6's -- they make inline six cylinder engines. This should be common knowledge for any car guy.

The article itself has errors such as when it stated that BMW hasn't seen turbo charging since the 2002 which is flatly wrong. BMW won F1 in the 80's with a turbo motor and had a turbo charged 7 Series in the 80's. The poster, david999, makes his own error in the headline and description with "V6" comment.

BMW has been rumoured since September to be cutting production of its V8s and the 6s in favour of 4 cylinders by 2011. Nobody is buying there big engines anymore.

even though the person who posted this obviously doesn't know much about BMW, I personally don't mind the switch (and it is coming, BMW has already told dealers as much). There certainly won't be any performance dropoff -- BMW has previously said they can reliably get up to 500hp from the twin turbo 3.0L straight six and over 600hp from the 4.4L V8 twin turbo, either of which is plenty.

For a start, BMWs M division has no V12s.. its a 4.0l V8 and a 5.0l V10. If you want to start rumours, please get your numbers right!

i heard a rumor that Nissan was buying BMW and that the 3 series and the G37 were going to start sharing platforms and that the new Q50 is going to feature the idrive system and be a japanese version of the new 7 series

Thanks M35R. I was going to say the same thing ... There is no M divison V12, only a V10, which is inspired by last formula 1 engine generation (and on top of that there is no V6 in the whole BMW lineup).
Haters and people with bias despairingly try to generate romours. BMW makes some of the best engines on this planet, and their decisions for the future will again be a success.
