BMW Sales Tumble 17% - Mini Gains An Impressive 24.8% For June
The BMW Group in the US (BMW and MINI combined) today reported June vehicle sales of 26,155, a decline of 11 percent from the 29,394 vehicles sold in the same month of 2007.  For the first six months of 2008, BMW Group sales are down 3.9 percent to 157,913 vehicles versus the 164,338 sold in the first half of 2007.

BMW Brand Sales

BMW brand sales declined 17 percent, to 20,944 vehicles compared to 25,220 vehicles sold in June 2007. Year-to-date, BMW reported sales of 131,513 vehicles compared to the 144,579 reported in the same period a year ago, a decline of 9 percent.

"Internet leads and consumer traffic in our dealerships remain good, showing a premium brand such as BMW has the ability to better weather these turbulent times,” said Jim O'Donnell, President of BMW of North America, LLC. “Even in this segment however, we see a desire for increased efficiency and that is providing a natural impetus for strong sales of our new 1 Series and the 3 Series 328i models, but also for other vehicles such as the new X6 where consumers see the combination of efficiency, performance and luxury that's right for their unique needs. Within this overall environment, we are determined to remain profitable and help our corporation. We will do this by exercising disciplined volume management matched to demand, and make a small number of vehicles available to other markets where exchange rates are more beneficial for the company."

BMW Automobile Sales

BMW’s automobile sales are down 17.5 percent in June to 16,555 versus 20,068 in the same month a year ago. Year-to-date sales are down 8.7 percent, to 103,522 automobiles compared to 113,396 in the first half of 2007.

BMW Sports Activity Vehicles

Sales of BMW Sports Activity Vehicles are down 14.8 percent in June to 4,389 vehicles over the 5,152 sold last June. Year-to-date, sales of BMW Sports Activity Vehicles decreased by 10.2 percent, to 27,991 vehicles compared to the 31,184 sold in the same period of 2007.

MINI Brand Sales

MINI USA reported sales of 5,211 cars, a 24.8 percent increase compared to 4,174 cars sold in the same period a year ago. Year-to date, MINI USA also reported sales of 26,400 cars, an increase of 33.6 percent over the 19,759 vehicles sold in the same period a year ago.

"The last three months have been the best in our history as the significant structural shift to small cars has brought into our dealerships a diverse range of vehicle owners that currently drive large cars, SUVs and trucks. Our retailers tell us these people recognize the combination of efficiency, great dynamics and premium values MINI provides and it allows them to downsize their vehicle without downsizing their aspirations," said Jim McDowell, Vice-President MINI USA. “With very few cars remaining in inventory, our dealers are focusing on taking orders for custom-built cars that will be delivered to MINI drivers in July through September

BMW Certified Pre-Owned

BMW Certified Pre-Owned reported 7,909 CPO vehicles sold in June 2008 versus 7,540 vehicles reported last June, an increase of 4.9 percent. Year-to-date, CPO sales are up 22.7 percent, to 51,986 over the 42,384 reported in the same period in 2007.

Star, I guess you should have waited to see what the Bimmer results are before posting your crap on the Lexus post.

For the record, I am far from being a Lexus fan.

"Exactly. If we look at the numbers we notice that the sales for the ENTIRE Lexus line dropped significantly which shows that the majority of Lexus buyers(former Toyota owners) are not people with money. On the other hand we can see that true luxury brands like Mercedes or BMW are not affected as much by the economic conditions since their buyers are mostly upper class.
Lexus WILL go down, there is no doubt about that. With no heritage and no appeal to either the car enthusiast or the rich, this brand has no chance of surviving." Star

Maybe the reason for the industry slowdown have more to do with the fact that the economy sucks than it does any particular brand. Every manufacturer--with the exception of Mercedes--has reported double digit sales decreases last month.

Even the so-called rich people are pulling back and not spending as much on vehicles right now.

GTR ... BMW did best lexus again for sales in the US. Plus their decline has not been as sharp as it was for Lexus over the past 6 months. What is worse for Lexus, is they dont have any new product coming out to help slow down their fall.

And BMW4me4ever.... BMW has decline 17% and it has several NEW cars in the market... Without those the numbers are much worse than LEXUS that doesn't have any new ones.
I'm not a LEXUS fan by any means and I like Bimmers... just trying to make sure that you see the REAL difference.

svxx ... yes i do understand the difference. This is what i do for a living. BMW does have new models out and should manufacturers do what needs to be done in order to keep things moving in a positive direction as best as they can.

Lexus at the moment, has no new models in the production line-up aside from the RX, had inflated sales due to inflated products. Their demise will continue throughout the year. BMW on the other hand seems to be more pro-active in introducing new models into its line-up. That is why their fall month in and month out has not been as drastic nor will it continue to be as drastic as in Lexus. Lexus has become a little complacent on their successes. They make a good product and it is a shame that they are falling the way they are. Lexus has not had a POSITIVE MONTH in over a year. That is a bad sign ..

Is it just me or is the jump for Mini strictly because they have another model on-sale that they didn't have last year? The increase and reduction on the Cooper offset...then you have the Clubman...

From the Lexus sales thread:

"Only 650 new LX570's sold?" +5 boost

Yet, the new X6 has only sold 623.

X3 sales are pathetic, done 42% (there's your new money) and 6-series sales down 37%?! I thought old money didnt faulter in a recession?

:/

X6 -- it's a sold out car, you can't sell what you don't have. If BMW wanted to see higher sales figures for the X6, they'd let dealers have more of them. Same applies to the 1-Series. Dealers don't have them either.

X3 -- yeah, I agree, that isn't good. And the X3 actually gets good gas mileage for an SUV (I average the same in X3 loaners as I did in my 330i), so that sales decline is pretty surprising.

The 6 is not exactly an old-money car.

It's too flashy. Real old-money sticks with the basics for daily drivers- S, SL Mercedes, Range Rover (NOT the RR Sport), 3 Series, and Suburbans/Tahoes.

Although expensive these cars aren't as ostentatious as the 6.

Old-money is used to having money so while they buy nice cars, they don't feel the need to buy the biggest, flashiest, fastest thing they see.

now THAT is going off on a tangent.

Yeah, and the GX is down -47.6. The LX is new and has a market niche for buyers who want a "luxury" Landcruiser. All 650 customers.

The X6 is SOLD OUT TO DEALERS.

NOT TO CONSUMERS. There is a big difference.

No wonder you are being deboosted so much.

1% used car rates and 2.9% lease rates and BMW still can't give their cars away.

Better rollout a .3series and throw it up against the Corolla.

The Quandts can't be happy knowing net profit is down 18% this year after all the new products they've been marketing lately.

Lost amid all this stone throwing is this little tidbit: BMW was the top selling luxury brand in the U.S. last month, sales decline and all.

Personally I'd rather they not be the top selling luxury brand, prestige and exclusivity mean more to me than volume. But then that's why I don't run a car company. The only reason I'm pointing it out is because if people are going to throw a hissy fit over a sales decline compared to their all time best month ever, try putting it in perspective with what everyone else did. BMW dropped versus their record June last year (when they finished #2), but this time finished #1. Lexus dropped even worse and finished #2 (down from #1 last year), but the more important note is that Mercedes came very close to knocking Lexus to #3. My guess is it's been a while since that happened. And it wouldn't surprise me if it happened as soon as next month. The U.S. is all Lexus has. If they lose that...

Before anybody else starts waxing about the demise of BMW or Lexus or anybody else, consider this.

Both BMW and Lexus have been successful purveyors of luxury SUVs, whose sales have plummeted. Thus their overall sales will drop as well.

Toyota, which is not a luxury brand but who also sells lots of trucks and SUVs, is in the same boat.

People we are on the verge of recession, yes I said the dreaded "r" word. I am surprised anyone is up to be honest. I live in NYC and even those here with lots of cash are not wanting to spend at this moment. Bear Market coming my Wall St friends say... So many are sitting pretty to see what happens in the next few weeks...

The arguements on this thread the Lexus sales decline thread makes me wonder the age of the people here.

One of the big reasons why luxury car sales are down is because less expensive cars are being offered with luxury features.

People who car barely afford a luxury car will move down to economy cars, and that's the case with both BMW and Lexus.

Mercedes' customers on the other hand are very brand loyal, usually with a higher level of income than BMW and Lexus. Therefore they are doing fine while everyone else is falling.

Yeah... Im a BMW hardcore fan, but that's the truth.
At such difficult times like this, I didn't expect anyone to have a sales increase in the luxury market.

Producing cars is more expensive now as the raw materials used are more expensive. So brands have to either upper their prices, or suffer from less profit. Because of the fierce competition, many are keeping their prices as low as possible, or increasing them slightly.
