BMW Ties Lexus In Latest Customer Satisfaction Survey
Lexus remained the top auto brand in a customer satisfaction survey joined by BMW while Buick and Cadillac and Lincoln Mercury fell.

Lexus again scored 87 of 100 points in the study released today by the University of Michigan's National Quality Research Center. BMW's 1-point gain from a year ago tied it with Toyota's luxury division. Toyota's main brand and Honda Motor Co.'s Honda were next, as both rose 2 points to 86 in the survey of buyers who've owned their vehicles between 6 months and 3 years.

``For GM, Ford and Chrysler the uphill struggle becomes more uphill,'' said Claes Fornell, who oversees the American Customer Satisfaction Index for the Ann Arbor, Michigan-based university. The slip for U.S. brands was partly the result of higher gasoline prices, he said in an interview yesterday.

Homer,

Lexus fans have nothing to brag about besides their beloved Hybrid technology. There's nothing exciting about the LS I purchased but it does its job very well. I doesn't have the curb appeal of my S550 but then again an S-Class has always been a marquee name.

Another phrase used by kids.

"You've just been POWNED!".

It is hilarious how Toyota doesn't seperate Lexus' bottom line figures when it posts it's profit margins BUT...... When it comes to Customer Satisfaction it happily seperate itself from Toyota.

Toyota seperated itself from Lexus on this report because it looked good. Notice how Nissan (Infiniti), Volkswagen (Audi,Porsche), Honda (Acura) did not seperate themselves from their children.

you didn't bother answering the question.... what does a lease have to do with the quality/performance of the car? millions of others also bought big houses they couldn't afford and look where that got us. if all you can afford is the lease payment, you probably shouldn't be driving that car.

If your figures are indeed correct, it might be because BMW has the highest residual of any luxury car maker in the world.

If you check consumer reports it recommends the 3, 5 and 7 series.

As far as BMW repair garages go I find you way off base.. My BMW's have been flawless. I only see the dealership once a year for an oil change and service, which by the way is paid for by BMW. The one Lexus I owned screwed me every time I took it in for service. $$$$$$$$$$$$ everytime for the recommended oil change on the Lex.. Soon traded it for another BMW.

My father has a 2000 BMW with over 100,000 miles on it and the only problem he ever had with it was a power window rotor that was replaced free of charge.

So I guess that blows your repair conspiracy theory out of the water.

BMWnumber1, it's good thing your father didn't have to go through the "no reverse" transmission(ZF5HP19) failures on 3/5 series, X3 and X5 from 1999 model years; that could have been costly.

BMWnumber1BMWnumber1 - 8/19/2008 12:52:01 PM

Almost as costly as the transmission failure of my 2002 Lexus ES300 that plagued Lexus for years.

sectorsector - 8/19/2008 1:39:54 PM
-9 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
That "lazy transmission and hesitation" issue was resolved by Lexus using a new chip (engine computer). It was fixed by Lexus at "no cost" both parts and labor. Problem solved.

BMW on the other hand denied their transmission problem (complete loss of reverse gear) and customers had to foot the bill at the tune of $3500!

oddly enough, i always see the germans (usually bmw) winning the performance tests. many of the articles i've read in the recent months have only had one "negative" thing to say about bimmers and that was the idrive. and while i think it could be improved, it's not that difficult to use. my only complaint with that system is that the processor could be faster.

i know a guy who had a 325i for hiw wife and an m3 for him. he traded them and got a lx470 and he does like it very much. though, as much as he likes the lexus, he still says his bimmer was more fun and he liked it better. he is looking to get an m5 in the future. You do know that BMW's are very reliable right?
Consumer reports recommends most of the BMW models, including the 5. JD-powers consistently gives them high marks. Sure, Lexus tops the reliability charts, but just because BMW is lower doesn't mean reliability is horrendous. BMW ranked higher than HONDA, Infiniti, and Nissan according to the latest 2008 J.D. power dependability rating.

Here we go again, I don't like Lexus but I can tell you that BMW's have a luke-warm rep for reliability. I should know, I own a couple of BMW's myself. As I said before, Germans cannot build great cars inexpensively. They cut corners where they shouldn't i.e. the coolant system. I won't even go into the utter lack of build quality of BMW's Mini. Bmw Mini = Trabant.

Anyone who doesn't have a money tree in their backyard has a reason to buy Lexus, as it won't dry up your wallet.

People buy Lexuses but people lease BMWs. What this means is that BMW = continuous income stream

and

Lexus = periodic purchase. And since Lexus lasts so long, they don't have high turnover as BMW, and this is reflected in the sales numbers.

I have bought and paid for every BMW and other luxury car I have owned.

Not everyone leases their car.

I see many BMW and MB's from the 1960's and 70's still on the road, longer than Lexus has been in existence.

I can make an intelligent observation based on the fact that Lexus = Toyota. I don't see many Toyota's 40 to 50 years old still running and on the road.

huu76huu76 - 8/19/2008 4:06:33 PM
-9 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
BMW residuals are so high because they backload and inflate the residuals inorder to make BMW leases more affordable to the pretenders.

I guess you didn't hear about BMw writing off $300 million because of inflated values, while Toyota with approx 8x the sales volume only wrote off $90 million.

Toyota/Lexus may not report separetly, but I know on a per car basis, Lexus' make money since they don't have to discount (especially their bread and butter models).
Lexus' numbers may not sound high because of its lower volume globally, but I know you won't see them in the red.

enthusiast,
Why are BMW's profits down so drastically eventhough they're moving just as many leases this year? That's because they have to continue giving their cars away. That's what Hyundai does, BMW's true competitor.

bmw is immensely profitable (who knows if lexus is...still waiting for financials).

Actually, the University of Michigan National Quality Research Center is one of the most accurate and respected measures of "consumer satisfaction". As a matter of fact, they have licensed their proprietary data processes to investment companies and hedge funds for quant analysis when picking stocks.

JD Powers is a distant second when compared to the Michigan data. Ask anybody in Wall Street which info is more accurate or has more leverage. JD Powers is for marketing purposes (think Motor Trend or Popular Science), but the Michigan analysis is what Fortune 500 companies use when they need "real" data (think The Economist or Scientific American).
