BMW VS. MERCEDES BENZ
We've already seen BMW vs. Lexus and BMW vs. Audi. So lets finally compare these two.
Personally I like BMW better, but everyday I'm starting to like MB more and more. The new S class beats the 7 series IMO and the CLS is the most beautiful car ever.

BMW and Mercedes are often compared to each other, but the cars are quite different in philosophy and in what they were designed to do.
BMW's tend to be biased towards sport, while MB's are designed with comfort in mind. That's the main underlying difference between the two brands.
However, having driven some of the newer MB's in Europe, I got to give credit to their improved handling and driving dynamic abilities. They're still biased towards comfort, but their dynamics have improved greatly. Likewise, some of the newer BMW's have become more comfortable, while still being able to offer that BMW driving feel.
I like both brands. BMW is still my favorite, but I have the highest respect for the competition (Japanese included).
Want to write more, but I got some serious work to finish off now. Will be back later, of course.

Are you joking? BMW is nowhere near as safe as Mercedes, Audi and Lexus are safer than both of them, and neither have "unrivaled" dependability!

If I had to pick between these two cars, I would take the BMW in a heartbeat over the Mercedes-Benz. The Mercedes has bland styling and an awkward interior setup. BMW knows more about styling than Mercedes does.

in my opinion is not which car is better buy both. i like Mercedes and BMW. Buy a CLS and a 6 series. I don't like the low budget 1 series, A or B class. Another factor in buying a BMW or MB, is that they been making great cars for years, like the BMW 3.0 CS, 635csi, 850csi,(1997-2003) 5 series, Z8, Mercedes 560 sec, Mercedes SL, 70's, 80's, 90's, 300E, 450SEL. I would buy the classics and current models.

The best car to buy depends on what the individual wants. Saying BMW is better then Merc is like saying that pens are better than pencils. One is good in one situation and the other is good in another situation.

Yes, BMW's styling is at it's lowest point, but they still look better than a Mercedes. There's something about Mercedes' styling that just doesn't scream luxury or elegance to me. I think it's the front of the car and the wheels. They don't look like they're made for the ultimate in luxury. In other words, they don't have exciting designs, at least not for most of their cars.

-----------------------------------------------------
No, I'm going to argue that Lexus has style. I'll admit, up until 2006, Lexus didn't have the best designs, but when they started L-Finnesse, their designs were incredible, better than anyone else in their class. If you see them in pictures, they are great looking, when you see them in real life, they make your jaw drop they are such a good looking car. I've never been amazed at any Mercedes before. The best looking Mercedes I've seen in person is the CLS-Class. I have actually seen a BMW that looked really good, but never a Mercedes. And please, don't try to correct me because this is a matter of opinion, I'm not going to change my mind. I respect your decision to like Mercedes so respect mine to like Lexus.

We all know that BMW vs. Benz is only our opinion. Personally I perfer BMW, because I like their designs, performance, as well as interiors. But two out of these three (designs&interiors) are purely subjective.
IMO if you put all tha factors together my rankings would go like this...
1st Place: BMW
2nd Place: Tie between Benz & Lexus
4th Place: Audi

"and i wasn't aware anyone surpassed mercedes on safety."
Mercedes-Benz didn't earn THREE double-best-picks from the IIHS, as Audi did, and Volvo has always been the pinnacle of safety for a premium maker.
Mercedes may have loads of tech, but that doesn't play into whether or not they're safer. A lot of the technology on the new S550 (although I love it) is purely gimmickry.

Will when I first saw the 6-series my jaw dropped. Then I bought a black 650i coupe and every person that walks into my garage and see's it...Their jaws drop.
I don't believe Audi builds a better car than BMW, but I do Mercedes. That said I'd still rather own a Benz over an Audi & Lexus for the same reasons I would a Bimmer. I'm the type of person that when I spend my money, I want people to recognize that I worked hard to buy that toy in the driveway.
Mercedes & BMW both have more expressive designs & personality when compared to Audi & Lexus. To the average eye Audi's & Lexus's look like average car's. To my eye there deffinitly good looking car's (with exception of Lexus's RX, ES, & SC), but yet still manage to look too bland.
The elegant design's & big block engine's in Benz's are enough to keep me excited for a while, as is the all around performance and striking design of a Bimmer. The new designs coming from the two leading German automakers, keep you looking at your car walking too and from it in the parking lot. The Lexus & Audi designs tend to be repetive & can become boring to the eye after a shorter period of time.
There's just something about BMW & MB...Audi almost has it, Lexus is a loooooooonnnnnngggggg way off.

Personally I think each of the major German brands have vehicles that are particularly appealing (And yes I am pulling Audi into this)...
I would definitely take an A4 over the C-Class and the 3. Though the new 330ci is magnificent (amazing how 'designed' lights improve the look of the car instead of two blobs) I don't count it due to it being a niche entry. Neither Merc nor Audi have direct competitors for this.
It would be a tougher battle for choice between the A6 and the 5-series but here I'm afraid Merc has always failed to really impress me (besides the E55). I just find the E-Class always ages terribly.
There's no comparison when coming to the large luxury vehicles. The S-Class wins hands down, while the A8 comes close and the 7-series must be a nice drive (at this price range do you expect less) they've never quite captured the spirit of what these cars are about as easily as Mercedes has. I don't mention the glorious CL due to the same reasons as the 3-series Coupe.
The rest...SLK over Z4 and TT (if only it had a hard top cabrio). CLS is absolute magic, 6-series magnificently brawny. SUV's aren't my bag but the Q7 is impressive looking. Also I prefer AMG and Sportech to M. I prefer more subtlety to my cars (even the aggressive RS4 looks more subtle, albeit slightly, than the M3/CSL).
Talking about the RS4...I want one!

i think that MB is better than BMW:
in luxary (remember they are in that segmant)
saftey
and reliability
i think that the BMW is beter than MB:
for styling
and performance
both are poor in value(as in benifit over cost) so they tie in that category
so for me anyway i think the MB takes it as styling, and performance are important, but the MBs are not ugly and slow either just as the BMWs are safe, luxurious, and reliable. just not as much so imo

The two best premium brands under $100,000 will always be in an eternal competition....
What we have to acknowledge is that the old school theory of a Mercedes being the most classy car out there is no longer so - BMW matches the mark, and in Europe it is actually widely considered a more prestigious brand....
Owning and having owned both cars, one has to hand it to BMW for its absolute slickness...no matter how much horsepower you dump in the 55 or 65 amg engines, the handling and road grip will never match a BMW....
The new S class is gorgeous, but before that the 7 series was hands down the best luxury car on the market save for a uber-luxury rolls or bentley... But, that will change with the new 7 coming out in 2008....

I worked as a valet, evenings and weekends, for about two years. (I couldn't afford the car I wanted on my regular salary) During that time I had the opportunity to drive just about any car you can name, and made a confident decision on the car I wanted - BMW. ANY valet will tell you: aside from some AMG models, Mercedes lags. Stomp on the gas peddle and wonder if the car has a problem before it finally GOES! I will say the ride is extremely smooth and luxurious - hardly as precise (or rough) as a BMW. The Mercedes certainly appeals to a particular driver (old money white folks or new money minorities) but I'm just not that kind of driver.

mercedes lags...here we go again.
i would think the benz impresses more on a lap around a parking lot at 15mph (as a valet) more than a bmw would. i wouldn't discourage many people from favoring a bmw, but mercedes have had plenty of acceleration for a long time now. the "lag" may be due to using an automatic transmission. i haven't heard much about this lag thing though. despite what the valet union asserts.
by the way, i hope valets aren't "stomping" on gas pedals nearly as much as ferris bueller may suggest.

Oh, 1995e34... the most important lesson I learned as a valet is: Avoid valet service if you can! The "stomping" i described doesn't tend to take place at hotels or restaurants.... it's special events! We did lot's of jobs where the parking "area" was so far away from the event site, a special van would shuttle us back. At events like that, not only is your car really DRIVEN, but if you have something like a Maybach, you'll see a group of valets kicking back in it, feet up, cranking the stereo while they wait for your event to end. One time the company owner showed up and tried to fire a guy who was positively RACING an M5 back and forth through a crowded underground garage - but we were so short-staffed, he stayed on.
You know, if you could afford a Maybach, why would you drive yourself to the opera anyway?

====================================
Eh...BMW3030, MB isn't about handling. I have to give credit to the newer ones though, they handle amazingly well, especially European Mercedes' which seem to have sharper steering than the stuff sold here.
Having driven various rentals in Europe across the years, I can safely say that the newer MB's handle just as well as a BMW in EVERYDAY DRIVING, even perhaps out in the countryside on twisty roads.
The BMW however will always have that slight handling "extra" which makes it a BMW.

"Lexus isn't the king at all. Once they become a true GLOBAL BRAND with international sales that equal or exceed the Germans, then you can call Lexus the king."
---------------------------------------------------------
I get so stressed out why you German fans think that since a car brand isn't international it isn't good. Tell me (because I've asked this several times), why does Lexus have to be international to be a great car. MB, BMW, and Audi are international but they're no better than Lexus.

lexusis350,
I never said Lexus "isn't good", but you guys are hyping Lexus up. Lexus is superior, but they're only successful in North America - nowhere else. That doesn't make them the king at all. They might lead in the US, but if you examine the facts, the Germans aren't sleeping. In fact, the addition of Lexus to the North American carmarket has woken them up. From now on, the competition amongst these brands will be fiercer than ever.

North America is the largest, but so what? Lexus currently only appeals to Americans. They've got no history that even compares to the Germans - and this is WHAT MATTERS outside of the US, where people want a car where the badge means something. ;)

no, the rest of the world knows the germans are way more reliable than americans have been led to believe. and they appreciate REAL motorsports, increasing their value of driving dynamics.

So are you saying that the Lexus badge doesn't mean anything. And the whole history ordeal you bring up every dang time in a Lexus article, you don't need the history to be a good car. Ford and Mercedes have proved that with their cars not being the best they could be.

IM a huge mercedes fan. and as much as i say BMW's suck, i know they dont. You can't compare teh companies as a whole, but only the seperate models:
3 series over the c class..
m3 over c amg.. but the 2008 C63 amg is looking real good, with the new front end design and that beast of an engine( 500+ hp 6.2 liter v8)in that little car :D
e63 amg over m5
6 series and cls is a tough one... of course id choose the cls any day.
and the S class is rediculously nice.
THE 2007 Cl class is looking really good. i even like the styling better than the m6.
AMG over M anyday..
1. mercedes
2. bmw
3. audi
4. lexus
