BMW Wins Design Team Of The Year Award
The exhibition dedicated to this year's winners of the red dot award hosted by the red dot design museum, which is situated on the grounds of Essen's World Cultural Heritage, the coal mine "Zeche Zollverein", was extended until 5 August, 2007.

At the centre of this presentation of outstanding product design are highly acclaimed design projects accomplished by the this year's winner of the title "Design Team of the Year" -- BMW Group.

The show in Essen, which has already been extended once before, demonstrates how BMW Group always succeeds in fascinating customers of the BMW, MINI, Rolls-Royce and BMW Motorcycle brand with the design of their vehicles while also convincing the automotive experts.

At the internationally acclaimed design competition, current BMW Group products were also highly successful. Both the new BMW 3 Series Coupe and the new MINI were presented with a Red Dot Award 2007.

The jury also considered three BMW Motorcycle models: BMW F 800 S, BMW G 650 Xcountry and BMW HP2 Megamoto. Winning the title of "Design Team of the Year 2007" however, was the highlight of the award winning ceremony as it expresses the jury's respect for sustained and trend-setting innovative design work.

The award pays tribute to the design team for successfully highlighting the premium character of the car, while maintaining the tradition of the brands and expressing the innovative force of BMW Group.

This year's red dot awards presentation ceremony pays tribute to the design achievement of a whole team, the "Design Team of the Year" rather than honoring the work of individual designers.

During the award ceremony at the Aalto-Theater in Essen, Christopher E. Bangle, BMW Group's chief designer, emphasized his appreciation of this shift in focus. "Successful, sustained design never the work of an individual ," Bangle explained.

He highlighted the importance of bringing a range of different characters and personalities with diverse skills and qualifications using a high variety of different tools to work on one project.

An essential element of BMW Group's design philosophy is the principle of integrating a group of people with a variety of different skills in one successful unit. This is not just about teamwork but about the selection of the most efficient and effective method for every single stage of the project. "We need to put the right people in the right place," Bangle sums up, "and we need the right tool at the right time."

This method is an integral part of the process of designing vehicles of the BMW, MINI, Rolls-Royce and BMW Motorcycle brand. At the beginning of the design process, the designers are faced with an empty, white sheet of paper and their heads are full of information and ideas.

The visual expression of design concepts is delivered in many sketches. At the same time, two- and three-dimensional drafts are created by means of digital tools. These versatile tools allow the development of rough surface geometries and animations within a relatively short period of time. More importantly, however, they allow a highly efficient exchange of data with all other partners in the product development process.

During all stages, the design process is characterized by an ongoing assessment to ensure that the right tools are used for the process in hand. A life-size "tape plan" with the finalized proportions for example, is used to hone the most important contour lines. This method allows the rapid implementation of changed within the design concept without excessive material consumption.

This is followed by the next stage: from two-dimensional to three-dimensional representation. At this time, the first clay models and the first virtual three-dimensional models are developed. Both tools are important in their own specific way: the clay model widens the sensory perception, while the computer allows a fast and precise transfer of data to the numerous development partners.

The designers are set on dealing with the problem of when best let machines take over manual processes and vice versa in an ongoing and deliberate process. The quest for the right tool is guided by clear principles, which determine the composition and interaction of a design team. Best example: CAS (Computer Aided Styling) methods for design processes are only deployed by clay modelers with a high degree of professionalism and many years of experience with the clay modeling process.

Only then can these skilled team members exploit the strengths of this tool without losing the design to its preference. Does work on a virtual object open up new design potential or does it even restrict creativity? In order to find answers o these questions, one must look to the work on a real, three-dimensional object. This way the personal touch of skilled human beings with their optical and tactile sensory abilities remains at the center of this process.

"Whenever we need to see the overall effect of a vehicle, the eyes and hands of the human designer are vastly superior to any computer tool," Ralf Kostenzer, Head of Clay and CAS Modelling at BMW Group's design department, emphasizes. Yet, computers are indispensable when it comes to making the production process more efficient and gaining more time for the creative process.

When it comes to making design processes more efficient, the deployment of a five-axis CNC milling machine is doubtlessly the tool of choice. This machine is used to introduce rough contours and proportions to a new clay model. The milling machine is programmed to CAS data. The rough models are then manually honed with fine tools to their final design. Over a period of several months, the clay modelers will refine, diversify and add the finishing touches to the clay model.

"For us, the finer modeling work that come with the design of surfaces truly proves that car design is a form of art," Kostenzer explains. This is achieved by a close cooperation between designers and clay modelers. At the same time, they will use their CAS skills to quickly change individual details such as headlight assemblies or wheel via rapid prototyping whenever this is deemed efficient. Different methods are seamlessly integrated into the entire design process.

The processes a selected model has to undergo prior to its series production are characterized by interaction between human creativity and computer-aided efficiency. Computer Aided Design (CAD) is used to reconvert the data acquired by scanning the clay model into three-dimensional computer models.

This way, data is transferred efficiently to all departments involved in the product development process right through to preparing the model for the tooling department, which marks the start of all series production processes. Up until this moment, the hand-made clay model remains the final reference for the safe implementation of all technical requirements.

It's a no-brainer. Judgement was probably clouded by smoking old BMW tire grinds or something equally debilitating as a cause for neurological deficiency. The only thing that I can give to a car company that adobts the Bangle butt and dreaded iDrive is my finger salute.

This award is way more deserving to Audi or Mercedes before BMW.

The only good-looking BMW right now is the 3-Series Coupe. On the other hand, the new S-Class, CL-Class, R8, A5, and TT all are good-looking designs from consistent design themes.

Thank you for sharing your biased opinion yet again Will. A simple congratulations would suffice.

I do agree with you that those design themes look fantastic, especially the R8.

I believe BMW is much more consistent and groundbreaking with their designs. Many of the original designs developed by BMW's are copied throughout the automotive industry, even the technology.

I am proud of BMW. This is a very high honor, and they have worked hard to earn it.

Congrats BMW!

Will,

In a sense I agree with you that both Mercedes and Audi have more "good-looking" cars in their current line-ups than BMW does. However it does not take away from the fact that BMW designs are all about pushing the envelope. Chris Bangle of course has made some mistakes, but it was other automakers that chose to copy his so-called "mistakes" anyway.

Love them or hate them, BMW designs inspire all other automakers to design better-looking cars. For instance, you have BMW to thank for the new Lexus LS that for the first time in its life, doesn't look completely bland and uninspiring.

Good job BMW.

"the only good-looking BMW right now is the 3-Series Coupe."

I think what you meant to say is that in your opinion the only good looking BMW is the 3 series coupe. I could be wrong, you could be the collective though of thousands of designers, and consumers.

In my opinion, the phrase "in my opinion" really goes without saying on internet forums. Nobody's word here is definitive, but this is just my opinion of course...

Fendi,

Points taken, and I agree with everything you said.
From that standpoint BMW really does deserve this award. Where would Toyota, Honda, Mercedes, or Lexus have taken their design directions without seeing BMW's first? I have no idea.

Obviously not, but surely you realize the enormous impact DesignWorks has had on vehicle design since 1998. As the saying goes, "Imitation is a form of flattery", and now they are reaping the benefits of visionary and pioneering design work, not only in rewards and honors like this, but also in worldwide sales for BMW.

My only real point of contention with BMW design are the dreadful tail lamps of the 3 series sedan.

IMHO BMW could have done a better job on the front end of the 5, to make it more of a evolution, rather than a revolution.

Aside from that, I think they have done a dam nice job.

BMW used to be critisized alot for making the same car in 3 different sizes, most notably when the E46, E39, and E38 were in the range at the same time... I think it's one of the reasons that the board stared signing off some of bangles more interesting designs. These days sooo many manufacturers are just making different body styles but with the same "corporate face"... Audi and Ford (UK) especially... it's like their CAD designers start of with a standard vehicle then use software to squash and stretch it until it's silhouette represents the new car they wanna make! DONT GET ME WRONG -- Im not bashing them for it. It does make for a cohesive brand image and the Audi's look alright -- BUT BMW are pushing the limits abit more than most others and personally I like them.

The 1er has won me over, the 3er (save the tail-lights) is good, the 5er's great, the 6's front is not mean enough, the 7 (since the face-lift is a whale - I prefered the E65 when it was launched to the face-lift) the Z4 is cool (in coupe form anyway) the X5 is great, the X3 is smart lookin since the recent face-lift and the X6 is.... well the X6 is ... errr.... hmm, not sure about that one!

All BMWs are ugly. These people and judges know nothing about design and what makes a beautiful car. Let me give you a list of beautiful cars.

Lexus ES
Lexus IS
Lexus GS
Lexus LS
Lexus LX570
Toyota Camry
Toyota Solara
Toyota Avalon
Toyota Auris
Toyota Corolla
Toyota Landcruiser
Bentley Flying Spur

That's it. BMW does not deserve this award.

Save for Audi, how many car companies have copied Bangle's designs,

MB- S class (interior, well and some exterior)
Lexus- The whole friggin line up save the pokemon RX and the older gen models
Infiniti- g35 or 37 whatever it is now, hoffmister kink

BMW designs have influenced so many other car designs, especially the new Lexus, look at the new LS, looks just like a 5 series from profile and if you dare say it looks like a Camry, look at the Camry as well, it looks just like a 5 in many respects on the exterior level, and besides what is a $70,000 (LS) car borrowing its aesthetics from a $25,000 car (Camry). Do not get me wrong, i like the new LS, i think its beautiful, but when people rant and scream Bangle designs are horrible, but yet their favorite cars borrow and copy the designs they have nothing to say. Bangle has changed the game, I do agree that the designs are not executed to perfection, but the cars have a certain presence to them, you don't see the car you feel it, wide body stance, elongated hoods, short overhangs, "flame surfacing" the play of light and shadow on the "creases and folds" which i prefer to call the carved elements, it's all beautiful. The cars look like they are in motion even at a stand still, they look ready to move.
I am an architect and graphic designer by profession, so I know a "little" about design. BMW cars a something else, i know i will get a lot of heat from my comments, but open your eyes and appreciate the designs, look at the car fro different angles, watch what light and darkness do to the BMW's, then you'll understand that someone sat down to design these cars with design on their mind and not playing it safe.

I love where Merc is going with their new designs, no other car looks classier than their new releases, save the R which my mother has. But the CL is absolutely beautiful, the new S has the most pretigious aura in its class given the right wheels, Audi, simply beautiful, but almost more simple than beautiful, save the A6, looks too awkward. Lexus, I love the IS except for the orange on the tail lights, i tmakes the car look 5 years older, the LS is nice, perhaps because it took a lot of cues from BMW. I dislike the other Lexus models especially the RX, too feminine for my taste. Infiniti, the only car that seems to exist from that camp is the G. I cannot mention another Infinit model off the top of my head.

But seriously, stop the Bangle bashing, open your eyes and yes your "soul" and see what has made the current models of BMW the best selling mmodels ever.

BMW - love them or hate them, whichever you choose you'll be doing it with passion and that is their goal. to evoke passion. cheesy but true

I think this award should be "Most improved".

After the recent hurdle of bangle butt 5 & 7 series debackles, BMWs designs just now getting very good (3 & 6 series are remarkable).

As an aside, I do find it interesting how quickly Audi's designs seem dated to me (and other's I've heard).

Part of having a good design is something that will continue to look good for many years past the next model. I think BMW has more staying power than most of the others.

It is hard to believe BMW could win a design award. Those Bangle-Bombs do look somewhat better, but let's be realistic, they are not award winners by any stretch. Having owned 3 Bimmers, you couldn't pay me to drive another one. Sorry Bimmer fans, they are and have always been a second rate German car that is now ugly as well.
