BMW X1 spotted at the 'ring
In addition to its V-series of cars BMW is also working on a new compact SUV model positioned below the current X3 that has now been spotted in prototype form at the Nurburgring.

Likely to be called the X1, the new car is based on the 1-series range but will come with a taller ride height as well as an X-drive AWD system lifted directly from the larger X3 SUV.

Engine options will range from a 145hp 1.8L four-cylinder petrol engine to a range topping 3L diesel.

How is a spy photo of a testing mule a "release"? Oh, it isn't and you are just being a petty troll, I get it. Mission accomplished.

I like the idea of a very small practical 1 series based vehicle. Fun to drive and adequate utility, I might just get one. I just picked up a new 335i sedan because the 135i came up a bit short on utility. I hope they pull the trigger and do it right. Also I hate the little up swept rear window in the X3, line of the X5 is nice. GJ

Great strategy. Flood the market with garbage cars to make your customers feel more unique.

11% higher sales, 18% less NET profit so far in 2008. Brilliant strategy, sounds like BMW is gunning for Hyundai. Rightly so considering their design direction.

predictable progession for bmw. if it gets much smaller that the x3, what will be the point? the x3 is quite small (for an suv/sav whatever) itself and i cant see this car being any smaller. it is like the x6, a bit pointless but i knew they would do it.

whats the bet on when they re-release the m1 and 8-series.
are they going to release a csl version of the new m3?

What is the point? !!! "Energy" perhaps you have not noticed but the world is experiencing a bit of a crisis and big SUVs have begun to fall from favor. The X5 and X3 tend to be good in their respective classes, but for some of us a smaller vehicle would be preferable. I suspect an X1 would also do well in Europe especially with a small diesel. My first three BMWs were 2002s and they were way smaller than a 128i. GJ

if you want a smaller vehicle, why would you buy an x1? if you want to safe money on petrol/have a cleaner car, there a lots of others to choose from.
i get what you're saying but i still think it is a useless

amazingbimmer,
What do Europeans pay with when they buy BMW's? If the dollar is low, raise your prices if yoru clientele are supposed to be rich. BMW screwed themselves by relying too much on leases and rich parents.

The Euro has appreciated so their purchasing power for materials is greater as everything is priced in US dollars, hence material costs are lower relative to US makers. Your excuse holds no water.

I'd consider a X1 because I like the idea of compact utility combined with fun to drive. I've had eleven BMW's including 2002's, and at least one of each 3 series. BMW gets the driving dynamics right, and for me better than anyone else. I had an X3 loaner from the dealer and it wasn't bad, but mileage was not what I'd choose in this day. I own a ranch so a small four wheel drive X1 could be a nice balance. GJ
