BMW X6 Twin-Turbo V8 spotted near Spartanburg
Our dear friend David aka Palbay, sent us an email yesterday with the latest photos of a ready-for-production BMW X6 Twin-Turbo V8. The higher end version of the X6, codenamed xDrive50i, will be released later this year and it will be equipped with a new 400hp 4.4 liter twin-turbo V8 engine.

In a previous article back in January, a confidential BMW document showed a comparison between the xDrive50i, the Porsche Cayenne GTS and Range Rover Sport V8 Supercharged. The X6 V8 literally"killed" its competitors in every test, including 0-60 and best MPG.

Here is what David sent us in:

Here are some pic's of a production level TTV8 X6. This is a Vermilion Red ,Non Sport Package, with 19" Style 257 wheels and running boards. This is the base TTV8 X6 setup. Not seen this setup in any of BMW's marketing info. The fact that BMW has released the Plant Mgr's to drive these cars home….means TTV8 X6 production is well underway.

WooHoo! It's the BMW X6-V8-TT-X-drive-i-drive-50i

At least its backside is large enough to fit all that nomenclature.

Now that is the funniest thing I've read all day.

do I like the new naming structure? No. But is "X6 xDrive50i" any longer than "E350 4MATIC" or "A4 2.0T Quattro"? Also no. So many of the German cars have longer names, big deal. I think we'll survive.

yeah, but the E350 lettering is on one side, and 4matic is on the other, just like the Audi (with quattro in tiny letters). I think this one will have X6 on the right and then xDrive50i somewhere below it.

Too wordy IMHO.

If the Euro-style alpha-numeric vehicle designations are getting this long, then i hope that the Americans and Japanese will start to give their cars real names again instead following this trend, too.

I would much rather see a new Acura Legend than an Acura RL 3.5 SH-AWD Type-S; I think Cadillac should bring back real car names, too (maybe just for the American market) I think names like 'Coupe DeVille' , 'Eldorado' , and 'Fleetwood' were much cooler than CTS, DTS, ETC, etc. (get it?)

I think there is also something not fluid about "X6 xDrive50i" Would be easier to say if it was along the lines of "X6 5.0i xDrive." Then again, that goes against what BMW wanted with their new xDrive nomenclature, instant recognition that all models come with 4 wheel drive integrated into the model as the name suggests. None of that "Does this come with xDrive?" business.

goochgooch - 7/14/2008 3:28:26 PM

Yeah, Acura going alphanumeric was the worst. How could they just toss cool names like "Legend" and "Integra" (which, like it or not, had built significant recognition)? All the American companies thought it would be cool to do the same thing. Thank God they didn't call the Corvette the C57 or something similarly stupid. What the Mustang have been? F23 or F49? Ferrari might have gotten mad at them.

I agree, it's a bad idea to change from one naming scheme to the other. In the case of BMW or MB, they've had alpha-numeric for their entire existence. Putting in this xdrive50i mumbo jumbo just confuses people. Then someone like Acura comes along and creates a good name like Legend just to toss it to the can, it makes you wonder who should have been fired over that.

I agree with you pushrod, bring back the manes and let the europeans keep their alpha numeric, since that is their history, just like De'Vill and Eldorado are names that are historic. The names have a history and a heritage.

ugliness has zero to do with affordability, just look at the Aztek.

Even car mags aren't fond of it's looks, now suddenly they can't afford it either?

First comment is too hilarious. 3rd comment spot on. I'm not too fond of the new nomenclature but hey we always seem to come up with nick names for cars anyway, no one calls the S Class 600 4matic by that, you just say S 600 right? Anyway, i was a little skeptical about the looks of the X6, i saw pics and vids of it, i liked the front but the shape of the rear kinda scared me, till I saw it in person yesterday, and oh boy does it look beautiful. There are just certain designs that won't appear photogenic, and BMW's are for the most part not photogenic, because I believe they are designed 3 dimensional and not per facade as their competitors. I won't attempt to explain myself but Bimmers tend to look much better in person than in pics.

i agree with the naming issue. BTW the S600 does not come in a 4matic variant. the S550 does though

I could'nt resist, I know it's no different than Audi or MB. But there's kinda flow easier off the tongue.

When you start putting the letter X all over the place it gets cloudy. X6 Xdrive50i. Why not just the X650i. That way the X denotes it is a BMW SUV, the 650 to show it's relation to the 6 series. Now I'm not sure if it really would be compared that way but I'm just saying. The X3 is the 3 series entry level, the X5 is the 5 series upscale. Now you have the X6. So there's the thought process on that one.

When they introduced the whole xdrive##i platform it really threw me off. Is xdrive the new AWD system, or is it just a name? With MB you know 4matic is AWD, and with Audi you know Quattro is AWD. It's the way it's been for years. So trying to invent something new is not bad, but the approach could reall have been better.

No X650i, then how about X6TTi, or since it has a ridiculous engine with a TT V8, why not just make it the X6M.

This thing reminds me of left over Whopper from Burger King from night before and you tried to re-heat the whopper in a Microwave oven for ooh 5-6 minutes. As soon as you touch the bun..the bun let's out hot air and one side of the bun sags down by letting the hot air out with puff of steams. After one side of the bun was sagged, BMW designers took a picture of it and decided to name it X5 with bunch of non-sense.
