BMW X6 destroyed the Cayenne GTS on Nurburgring test
Some of you might remember the BMW leaked document in which the new X6 xDrive50i was being compared to the Porsche Cayenne GTS. At that time, many people believed that since it was a BMW leaked document, the numbers might not be as accurate as they want us to believe.
I inclined to believe these allegations, but in the same time, I knew that the leaked document was an internal memo that had no marketing purposes. A few months later, the fellow car lovers at AutoBild had the opportunity to put the BMW X6 xDrive50i head-to-head with the Porsche Cayenne GTS.
So, 0-100km/h, 5.4 for the X6 and 6.1 for the Cayenne GTS.
Now, let’s see what the AutoBild folks have to say:
Nürburgring-Nordschleife times:
1. 8.54,4 min (max. 240,9 km/h) - X6 (automatic)
2. 9.01,9 min (max. 228,1 km/h) - Cayenne GTS (manual)
Weight:
1. 2378 kg - X6
2. 2410 kg - Cayenne GTS
Acceleration 0-100 km/h:
1. 5,7 s - X6
2. 6,7 s - Cayenne GTS
GPS-topspeed:
1. 263 km/h - Cayenne GTS
2. 252 km/h - X6 (limited)
Braking 100-0 km/h (warm):
1. 37,4 m - Cayenne GTS
2. 37,7 m - X6
Basic price:
1. 73 800 € - X6
2. 78 034 € - Cayenne GTS
Besides being faster from 0-100km/h, the BMW X6 xDrive50i was 7 seconds faster on the Nurburgring lap as well.
With a lower price, better fuel consumption and free 4-year maintenance, the X6 is a better buy. Sorry guys, as much as I like Porsche, the X6 takes the win this time.

Actually we're both wrong. I read they were changing it too a while back, but apparently BMW has decided to keep the "550" for continuity sake, just as they are keeping the new 7-Series the "750". So the new twin turbo V8 550 will be the "550i" still, and the all-wheel drive version will be the "550i xDrive".
That'd be the car I'd want (and the timing should work out perfectly with the end of my 535xi lease). I just hope by that time they'll actually allow you to get the sport suspension on the all-wheel drive cars. Are you listening BMW? Just because we want AWD doesn't mean we don't want the sport suspension. Audi has it with the S-Line package. You let us get sport suspensions on the X3, X5, and X6. Now let us get the sport suspension on the all-wheel drive cars too, where it would actually make sense. And with the X6's DPC torque vectoring system.

Congrats to the X6 for a job well done.
But I can't be the only person that doesn't see the X6 having a true competitor to go against right now. I would much prefer that a X5 4.8i (glad that BMW will finally offer a M version soon, but they need to offer the 5.0L Twin Turbo V8 now) go against a Porsche Cayenne GTS, Range Rover Sport Supercharged and a Merc ML550 at the Ring.

As you like to equate Audis with Volkswagens, consider a contest between the X6 and the Audi Q7 V12 TDI. The big Audi has 500 horsepower, 773 ft-lb of torque, and can do 0-62 in less than 5.5 seconds, all the while getting a combined city/highway mileage of better than 20 mpg.
Be careful what you wish for, dear boy!

It didn't say if the same guy was driving both machines. Same time of day? I don't doubt numbers - but there are a lot of variables. 7 seconds on track that large can be caused by a number of things. Isn't the track like 13 miles? Anyway - no doubt the BMW is impressive. With pretty equal numbers - I think it comes down to buyer preference.

Congratulations to BMW.
I belong to the Audi Club of North America, or ACNA. (You don't have to own an Audi in order to belong, by the way.) ACNA conducts many driving schools each year at various racetracks around the country (Road Atlanta, VIR, Watkins Glen, etc.). The club will not allow pickup trucks or SUVs to participate in these driving schools because of the rollover risk inehrent in vehicles with a high center of gravity. ACNA will not even allow high-performance SUVS like the GTS and X6. Perhaps ACNA will relax the rules in the future once the safety of high-performance SUVs in high-speed maneuvers has been demonstrated, assuming the insurance companies don't dig in their heels.
I don't follow SUVs very closely because I don't drive one or want one. However, I recall that Porsche originally designed the Cayenne so that it would perform well both off-road and on-road. I don't know if the GTS still has the excellent off-road capability of its less powerful Cayenne siblings, or if Porsche has compromised the GTS's off-road prowess in order to maximize its on-road performance.
It appears that the X6 has bested the Cayenne GTS in on-road performance. It will be interesting to see how the two cars compare off-road as well.
While we are on the subject of the "utility" of these two "sport-utility vehicles", we might as well compare the useful cargo room and towing capacity of the X6 and GTS.

Miss out on some reading comprehension courses in school? my original post was that 5000lb useless behemoths like X6 going around the ring is not only out of place but as interesting to witness as a pair of ice cream trucks shooting for the chicane.
And why did you bring up LS600 and do a unwarranted comparison with the Tahoe of all vehicles, do you normally cross shop a $40k car to a $100k car? Lexus is a ultra luxury car catering to those who want to be driven, not drive, it hits 0-60 in 5.5 and is probably one of the quietest, luxurious cars you can buy at any price while doing a respectable 20/22 mpg.

Porsche has introduced the Cayenne Turbo. It has 500 hp, 518 ft-lb of torque, can do 0-60 in 4.9 seconds, and can reach a top speed of 171 mph. This car will apparently spank the X6 on a racetrack. However, it costs almost $98,000!
The German horsepower race goes on, even for SUVs. Have Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Porsche ever heard of the "law of diminishing returns"?

a little unfair competition. a twin turbocharged 4.4 liter V8 is going to give more performance than a normally aspirated 4.8 V8, because it has more torque, that is needed to keep so much weight moving.

Even then it wouldn't have a chance. The RX suspension is mush, the brakes are panty-weight, the power steering cavitates during the most basic avoidance maneuvers (it stops functioning), and it is unbalanced beyond hope. The V10 would certaining offer more torque steer though.
