BMW already promoting diesel technology in USA ads
It looks like BMW not only has done their homework on diesel engines but also understands that it will take a while, to get USA customers to warm up to it again and understand why it is important.

So they're doing what any good marketer does in this situation.

You get the message out often and early.

Even though you won't be able to buy yours in the USA, they are already running print ads in various airports throughout the country.

Here's one we saw at the L.A. Airport last week.

The key question is...Will American drivers finally realize what their European counterparts have known for a long time...That the new diesels are AWESOME!

Do you believe they will sell when they hit dealerships in late 2008 and will you seriously consider purchasing one as your next car?

I'll take the 5x SUV with a diesel version of BMW's N54 engine.

Great job with the engines, these BMW engineers, but they still can't seem to pen window regulators that last for more than a year!

LOL!

My 7 year old 3-series still has its original window regulators, their working fine. What are you doing to your windows? "window goes up, window goes down, window goes up..."

we had an opportunity at a ride and drive event in Joliet, IL at the Autobahn Race track to drive the 535d. The power at the low end is incredible. Add to that the gas mileage and BMW has a huge winner yet again. Cant wait til the 335d arrives here next fall. I will replace my 2006 330xi with a 335d

I see they failed to inform the consumers why their diesels are not permitted, BY LAW, to be sold in North America.

Goes to show BMW is just a marketing company that happens to distribute cars.

001, awesome, really? N.Americans are a little more intelligent than Europeans to believe the diesel BS.

"A T2B5 diesel in Los Angeles can emit as much NOX as three and-a-half Priuses. So while the new diesels are fuel efficient, they still pollute more, making them an environmental mixed bag."

The 535d is in the Tier2Bin5 category, I wonder why BMW decided to overlook that tidbit in their spiffy new marketing ploy?

Europeans should just admit that diesel cars are more profitable, and that's the reason why they're spreading all this propaganda.

I see the diesel vs hybrid fight still is going strong. Actually at last count I believe diesel was winning due to Hybrids having to rewright their actuall MPG figures...but that's neither here nor there...in this case the best way forward is a melding of the two. As said before by many, diesel hybrids (while currently expensive) will eventually be the better in the long haul. Good city and highway performance all in one package.

That being said once Bio-diesel hits the market seriously...that will all change. We already have an infrastructure in place to produce and distribute a liquid fuel for our vehicles so to change it or add to it, Bio-diesel...would be simple. Retro fitting all gas stations with electirc might be just a bit more difficult. As well as the strain on our already overtaxed electric system (california I'm looking at you) if we all start plugging our cars in at night (the new plug-in hybrids that are arriving soon) like we do our cell phones.

So if I were a gambling man and wanted to bet on one of the two technologies right now (aka if I were to purchase a car) I would have to go with a diesel.

So BMW...bring over the diesels.

S4foxy,
Another word: Hybrid! LS600hL is still cleaner than the E320 Bluetec.
The Camry-hybrid leaves the E-Bluetec in the dust in everything but 0-60 (.7 sec slower) and the towing airplanes category.

Spectator,
Better do a recount. Hybrids are still doing better than diesel in mpg even after the 2008 adjustment.
http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/2005findacarf.jsp
Then factor in diesels require more oil (check the link above) and they're still dirtier.
Diesel hybrids are good, but by the time they become affordable, we'll be using electric or hydrogen-electric.

Since you're a gambling man, I've got a wager for you. Diesel will flop because big oil will see it as a chance to jack up diesel prices. Not to mention VW is the only one so far willing to offer diesels a reasonable price.

Bio-diesel will just make the cost of living go up. The Silverado/Sierra E85 trucks actually get worse mileage than the normal ones. They're cleaner though.

The solution is to use less oil, not something else (unless it's hydrogen) or in Europe's case, more oil.

Ok, being German maybe helps here. Some of the comments compare an E-Class Merc with a Prius and conclude that it consumes more and emits more. No doubt about that, but everyone will admit that this is apples and oranges. The disadvantages of Diesel (smokes, stinks, needs to get a oil change every so often) are things of the past. Who has ever driven a diesel car in the US (like the E320CDI) will know this. Today, both Mercedes Benz and BMW diesel vehicles need to be services approx every 2 years, while the Lexus GS450h needs to be services every year by default. But in reality diesel technology (bluetec and common rail) gets the average consumption (EPA standards and European standards alike) to a level comparable to the comparable Hybrids. And they do it at a lower price for the consumer. I think that is what counts at the end. We will see Bin5 vehicles be introduced into CA (and states that adhere the same emission standards, like NY) very soon and while Hybrid technology only makes sense due to tax incentives and a high gas price, the diesel vehicles come "into the money" a lot quicker, due to the lower price in conjunction with the same consumption. At the end the customer will decide and, as always, should have a choice. Let the customer decide whether they want to have a beefed up Toyota with substandard brakes or German engineering made for high speed driving (and thus the necessary reserves in brakes and handling). Did anyone know that the GS450h needs to be adjusted to enter the German market (stronger brakes, stonger oil cooler) because otherwise it would fail so badly against the German competition. At the same time the German manufacturers' homologation for the US market puts things like side marker lamps in, but they do not put lower performing brakes in (as Lexus USA does when compared to the Germany sold Lexus). I think it is better value for the money to buy a German diesel.

In the view of great oil dependence of the USA to be grouchy on the forum it’s counterproductive. The hybrids eventually will grow diesel-electric plug-in vehicles [PHEV] using biodiesel for many years before a hydrogen utopia can get closer to real life. Gas-electric hybrids versus diesel battle is a market approach for the next 2 years – no more providing the fact of tightening of emission regulations! No doubt that actual prices of conventional cars in USA are hyperinflated. So a clear minded price policy can fit even PHEV in a logical row of new car prices. No doubt SUV market is getting close to be fatigued thus making possible the return of wagons and hatchbacks especially when they are biodiesel PHEV. Clean diesel is a portion of technology developed to only by Germans but also Japanese and American companies in a joint effort to be environmental and most important viable on market.

Accutally is is very easy. If you live in a big town with a lot of traffic buy an hybrite.
For the rest common divers a diesel is the better choice. My Alfa Romeo GT 1.9 Diesel with 180 HP has an real averavge between 36 an 39 MPG (5.8-6.5 l/100km). (30%city 70% Autobahn) On american roads it should be even better because over here you just can not drive that slow :-).
The diesel is maybe 2000 Euro more to the patrol engine but the hybrite system ist expencive to an what if the energie cells are not quite as longliving als they should be (espacially cold areas). I bet prices for replacents will make you screem.
An what is about the prios anyway. Audi made a litte nice but boring and expencive car in 2000 too, the A2. That only needed about real 78 MPG ... noone wanted it. But now everyone wants to save the earth with his car ... how foolish is that. Drive hybrite but dont sign kyoto ... hey right

We have been driving diesel powered BMW's in the UK for many years now and I believe it is about time you guys in the US got the same opportunity, as the benefits are tremendous compared to the petrol variants you curently have available. I current own a 2007 BMW 520d, this is a 1998cc 4 cylinder (oh I hear you say, that must be gutless), however it produces 177hp giving a 0-60mph of 8.2 sec and top speed of 140mph, better still are the fuel consumption figures, I get 42mpg city and 53mpg highway. Couple this with the lowest emission figures in it class, 136g/km (this is almost 40% less than that of a Lexus LX400 hybrid), plus a particulate filter reducing particulate output to Zero and you have a very clean and economic car without sacrificing performance.

One of the main reasons why diesels are not allowed to be sold under US law is due to the early diesel particulate outputs which in some cases was as much as three times that of petrols, however the cars have evolved over the past ten years, but sadly the US law has not, this is most likely due to the power that the oil companies have over the US government, just think what would happen if everybody changes their cars over night, cars that did 40-50mpg plus with no decrease in performance and reduced emissions??? there would be a lot less gas/diesel sold.

The truth is that Europe has been GREEN driven for over two decades, this means that car manufactures have been forced through taxation to make the cars clearer and more efficent (over 40% of all cars sold in the EU from this fall will have less that 140g/km emissions, less that 2% of cars in the US do this), emissions are the big issue, therefore diesel will contiue to grow, providing lower emissions, higher performance and zero particulate output. Trust me guys, when the BMW diesels hit the US market in the fall, take one for a spin you will never look back.

Oh, by the way, gas is $11.50 gallon in the UK so think yourselves very lucky !!!
