BMW four-door coupe/8-series rendering
Following the trend of spacious coupes with more than the traditional two doors, we expect BMW to release an all-new super luxury car to cap its line. The new range-topping four-door coupe will target Mercedes-Benz’s CLS and Porsche’s Panamera, both also four-door coupes. The car will most likely come as a 2009 model year, and shares exterior similarities with the CS Concept revealed at Shanghai earlier this year.
BMW is expected to bring the new car in as the 8-series, although the new car shares very little in common with the long-gone 8-series that roamed the globe from 1990-1999. One of the few similarities that is likely will be the V12 powerplant under the hood - although the original 8-series’ six-speed manual will likely be replaced with a dual-clutch gearbox. The new CS-based 8-series is also expected to be targeted even further up-market than the original.

Oh so, BMW can remain true to the 2002 with the 1 Series but they can't do it with the 8 series? This thing is undeserving of the 8 series badging. How far up market are they trying to get?

The original 8-series wasn't exactly a huge success sales wise. Its no-where near as iconic as the 2002 so I don't see your point.

It's obvious you didn't see my point. I was referring to how the 1 series maintains a similar design to the 2002; afterall, it's "considered" to be representative of the 2002. But this 8 series rendering is a far cry from the original, which took some design cues from the M1. This design looks unique, but not in the same sense of the word when applied to the old 8 series.
I'm well aware of the fact that the 8 series tanked...that's why you can buy them for under $30k with fairly low mileage; except for the 850CSI and the Dinan Turbo which still go for around $60k(if you can even find them).

I know exactly what you were saying, but the thing is that the 135i is a tribute to one of BMW's most famous cars. It would be silly for this to make tribute to one of BMW's less than successful sales adventures, why would they want to bring out an updated version of a car that didn't sell very well the first time around. The original 8-series is forgoten, the 2002 hasn't, this is a chance to revive the 8 badging into something that might actually sell.

The 8 series was a 2 door coupe not a sedan thats the point he is trying to make

I know that, did you even read my posts? In short the point i'm making is that the original coupe 8-series wasn't a sales success and is largely forgotten at this point so using the 8 badging for something that doesn't resemble the original is fie in my book. If I have to write the same thing again for the fourth time then I give up...

I think the 8er will go against the CL more than the CLS...

while i like the idea of the 4 door coupe, i'm not sure it will be a good idea to have it poised above the 7 series in terms of price. they may be better off going after the cls rather than the panamera. bmw is a more volume oriented brand than porsche.

This BMW will dominate the road just like the current 7-Series does today.

Really i like BMW quite a bit, and used to like it even more when the prev gen 3 series and 5 series cars were in circulation, because their designs were very straightforward and well proportioned, they did not try to be pieces of art, they tried to be the "ultimate machine". So clearly they had a machinelike chunky proportion, which looked quite awesome. Clearly I'll rate the prev gen 3 series as the single best looking car i had seen in the last 10 years. Many people might disagree, but the last 3 serires and M3s were just the true beuties to me.
But really BMW, this has to stop, i mean BMW is becoming as common and as uniquely pedestrian as a toyota or a merc. I always liked BMWs over Mercs because they were more distinct and were not seen everywhere like the common mercedes. This is horrendous, almost every joe that i know today has got a BMW, it has become a man's common platter dinner. And this expanding of models will only make BMW less interesting. People will see so many of them on the road, that no one will even want to dream or crave about them, like one does when one sees a rare car. I propose that BMW should make the next 7 series look like the CSL and stop this madness of making SUVs and horrible looking cars like the 1 series. Create magic, not just recyclable commodity cars. Create cars that the memory may cherish, not one that becomes so everpresent, that you may even forget that you even have a BMW, a car that was rare and beautiful.

Mercs and BMWs are as common as each other
You cannot say that MBs are comparable to Toyotas in commonality idiot

In response to Mr. Monk that is quite vulgar and detestable of you to call me an "idiot" without really trying to understand my point. I was not assuming a Merc to be an equal of a toyota corolla, my comments only centered on my experience of seeing too many "boring" mercedes c classes and e classes on the road about 5 years ago with the then simply awesome 3 series or 5 series; simply BMW design was much more modern than Merc, and honest to god, i saw more merc on the road than BMWs, which along with their blandness made my eyes sore. LOL.

Hmm, with the V12, BMW is certainly shooting for the top end of premium. I agree with the previous comments on this proposed 8 series going up against the Merc CL, at least as far as price concerned. I'm sure we'll see a masking taped up picture of the "rumored twin turboed M version" on here soon enough ;)

farabira1 : I have no Idea were you come from or live but It is sure, were you live Mercedes is very common. That's the only reason that will allow me to forgive your ignorance. BMW outsells Mercedes around world and in my country BMW is very respected but also very common. However Mercedes is considered as one of the most exclusive Brands and FYI most of MB are several thousands more expensive. BMW is almost most of time a lighter car which is one of the main reasons because drives marginaly better than the MB on the track. Sure with Justice we can say that BMW rules the tracks, but in the same way MB is the king of the autobhans. If BMW try to put that new model over the 7 series, they will fail, Because as 1995e34 said, BMW is bmw is a more volume oriented brand (even M3 is a lot more common than ANY AMG model). BMW is a diferent kind of Design and engineering and Mercedes is also a lot diferent too. Both are great but diferent if you say anything about those brand you'll have to talk about differences I do not think That MB is better than BMW or BMW better than Merc, They are diferent and my favorite is MB, however is just becuse I prefer that kind of engineering orientation, That's all. May be one one day instead of moving in the autobhan at 180MPH I will try a track then , may be I will chose an M3. And to the last comment, put an AMG engine and that won't be Miss Piggy. The design is great But sadly I think that is very likely you are right. Heavy and powerfull cars is MB specialty and that's why every time that BMW try to change his philosphie, they fail: Series 8, Z8. I wish a car to beat M3 from MB, But I am not willing to loose weight , i.e. (gadgets, amenities and strong secure structure and powerful engine) to get a better performance. As an engineer I know that in most of the accidents the car with more inertia and gravity have better oportunities, I'm not willing to pay the price. If one day MB try to make an M3....they will fail due diferent philosophie. If I buy an M3 I do not want an C63, that's final. Most of the CLS buyers won't buy that coupe just because it is not a CLS. Finaly a 7 series will never look like a CLS because again diferent purpose. And wake up, BMW is trying to create volume oriented cars just like every brand.

Yeah i agree that Merc has way more pricetag than BMW, and has excellent road manners, and simply a technological showcase was the S class, but all the Older gentlemen drove a Merc in my complex, and believe me there and in the road around my house in bethesda, MD, i used to see more merc than BMW. And the design of the BMW was much more attractive than the sedate MErc designs. Sorry to disagree, but my liking tilts toward BMW, regardless of lesser price, or lesser power than any Merc.

i think bmw should have named what they have now as the 6 series, should haave been the 4 series
and this cs concept should have been the 6 series.
the 8 series should be a real 8 series like the 850csi was.
i dont know if pricing at 150k is a good idea.
most people will just get a bentley i think.

The 6-series is basically a coupe version of the 5-series, so the badging is appropriate. Calling the current 6-series a 4-series doesn't sound right. If this is to be a coupe version of the 7, then the 8 badging is also appropriate.

No... the 6 Series is based off the 5 Series sedan. It just has a 7 Series price tag. It's similar to how Mercedes-Benz positions the C-Class-based CLK.
