What's wrong with this car? Your perception of BMW is way off. In Europe, premium does not necessarily equate with the American definition of luxury. Audi and Mercedes-Benz also have models in this range. Small premium hatches are part of the European premium German automakers' strategy to move volume and provide a premium brand economically as possible. Only Americans view hatches as economy cars. Sit in a nicely equipped A3 and will see it's no economy car. Yet you get great gas milage, a smaller car, yet the the brand virtues.

So if I understand this correctly, BMW's 118d is the current World Green Car of the Year and they just released a model that bests it?! That is impressive. Nice work BMW! (FYI lexusbeautyqueen, BMW is a premium sport sedan maker first and foremost, not a luxury car maker just in case you weren't joking.)

Reading articles like this makes me really sick of the CAFE and any other eco-terrorist regulations. We need more diesel products here in the USA, NOW! Glad to see BMW (and MB) still believe in diesel. The 116D looks like a great car to zip around the city in, and it will perhaps be a great highway cruiser, but I would not expect to see it unleashed on open, winding roads (ala northern California and elsewhere). I drive a Chevy now, but I am growing increasingly impressed with what is coming out of the German auto manufacturers. I might be in the market for one of these diesels in the future.

It's called a 116d, it has a 2.0L engine and has 116hp.... What in the world is BMW doing with their naming schemes!!! at least it's not a 116 xDrive20d or something....

Of course this vehicle is not meant for the track. if you are a long commuter and sit in a lot of traffic, why not drive this? I would as a daily commuter car and a 335i coupe for the weekend.
Dont know if it is a turbo or not, since the link to the article wont open for me, but a small boost on the engine management software could easily boost the HP up 20 and the torque up 30. So if you need the power, a simple $100 solution...
