BMW name turns 90
On the 21st of this month, the BMW name turns ninety. Back in 1917, on this date, the BMW trademark was registered for the first time and two days later a letter sent to senior management informed them of the new name with every product built by the enterprise from that date onwards wearing the three letters ‘BMW’. Hey Bimmermike, I am with you. I believe BMW makes a driver's car, therefore a superior car. BUT....you gotta give props to Toyota. As you know Toyota owns/is Lexus.

Toyota was founded in 1937 by Kiichiro Toyoda as a spinoff from his father's company Toyota Industries to create automobiles. It created, first as a department of Toyota Industries, its first product Type A engine in 1934 and its first passenger car (the Toyota AA) in 1936.

Toyota just makes a different type of car man. They have a rich history, although not as rich or immersed in racing like BMW, Fiat, Merc, Maseratti, ferrari, or even Renault. I think they make wonderful transportation appliances--they just are not precision driving instruments.

By the way, BOTH companies narrowly survived WWII--no easy task considering the the two countries were obviously devastated. With their respective infrastructure and economic foundations in ruins, they still found a way to push forward and become what they are today (Mitsubishi and Mercedes are also in this boat along with Nissan)

Of all the car companies I admire most:

1)BMW
2)Honda (read how they started--fascinating)
3)Toyota
4)Mercedes

bimmermike,

The fact that you felt so compelled as to mention "Lexus" more times than "BMW" in your comment speaks volumes.

1)BMW
2)Honda fascinating)
3)Toyota
4)Audi
5)MB

but there a lot of other automakers tht sucessfully made their own way.

I am obviously a big Audi fan, but i like the way you think Bimmermike. Mind if the Audi guys sing along to the tunes of "Can't touch this".

It's amazing how they managed to stay after all these years. It's even more amazing that BMW was gonna be bought by Toyota but they survived by a miracle and look at how succesful BMW is now.

Daimler and Benz produced the world's first automobiles all the way back in 1886. BMW is a copycat...

History of the invention of the automobile:
-15th Century, Leonardo DaVinci drew up first plans for transportation vehicle
-1769 Nicolas Cugnot of France invented first steam powered auto.
- 1832 Robert Anderson of Scotland invented first electric powered auto
- 1885 Karl Benz of Germany invented and still holds the patent for the first gasoline powered auto.

Happy Birthday to BMW and thank you for bringing athletic performance to the everyday sedan. Nobody does it better.

If BMW made cars as well as they make bikes, no other auto company in the world would come close. Maybe I'm just obsessive though: R90S, R90/6, R100RT, R1150RT, K1200RS, K1200S, K1200LT all have a home in my garage.
