BMW planning new diesel-hybrid concept for Geneva
BMW will be showcasing two very different concepts at next month’s Geneva Motor Show, one a brand new eco-friendly vehicle touting the latest in EfficientDynamics technology and the other a previous sports concept displaying the carmaker’s new performance accessories range. The third major attraction on BMW’s stands at this year’s Geneva event will be the introduction of the new M3 Convertible complete with the carmaker’s all-new dual clutch gearbox.

Following on from the X6 Active Hybrid concept from last year, and the X3 Active Hybrid concept from 2005, BMW will showcase a new diesel-hybrid powertrain in a new concept based on the X5 SUV.

Why do companies want to complicate the already complex powertrain setup in most cars? This petrol/diesel-hybrid is expensive, adds to the complexity, increased kerb weight, pathetic performance...I can add a truck load of problems with this crappy setup. This hybrid rat race is sick, really! I know I am gonna ruffle a few feathers in here saying that but I have to say it. Rant over!

A diesel-hybrid is way more practical than a petrol-hybrid. At least it's a step forward in that respect.

Getting upwards of 50mpg is not pathetic performance, if you ask me.

Well, not in an SUV of this size atleast! Isn't 50 MPG what the Prius is supposed to do?

dugit, In fact with the advent of ipod, music was made simple, not complex! You could do away with your dusty tapes and CDs and wot not? Not so with the automotive industry! Already the on-board ECUs are so many in number engineers are floundering to get them all networked to clear the mess! I would rather plonk in a common rail diesel and drive around; I mean isnt this getting a bit out of hand, really? Why worry about something that's half a century away? I am sure the tech-geeks of that day and age will know too well to implement alternate transport systems!....Now having said that, did the vinyl-tape, cassette companies some 50 years ago really foresaw this music transition from analogue to digital? Now how has Apple managed to seamlessly make the transfer? Answer this and you have the answer for the transport solution after 50 years. Till then, enjoy driving cars with IC engines!
