BMW pure electric 1-series in the works
As demand for V12, V10 and V8 engines dies down, BMW will be shifting towards smaller and more fuel-efficient engines. According to Manfred Schoch, chairman of BMW’s works council, BMW hasn’t produced its 8-cylinder engine in a three-shift operation in a long time.

Schoch said that 6-cylinder assembly will be phased out in its Munich plant and will be replaced by 4-cylinder engines. By 2011, BMW hopes to produce 320,000 4-cylinder units a year in the programs first phase. In the second phase, BMW will add additional capacity for 240,000 engines a year.

Schoch also said that the works council is planning a development of a pure electric car based on the 1-Series which could be...

Please let's hope that BMW has learned that the current 1-series is ugly and it will have a much sexier the next time it comes around......Think Retro styling in the design of the late 80's to late 90's BMW styling!

I like the 1 Series. It is actually boxiest and most retro of their current designs. Look at one parked next to a 95-99 E36 coupe and you may be surprised at the similarity in shape, size, and proportion. (The 1 Series is actually a bit larger.)

Wow, the turbine like inline 6 is a BMW hallmark. Let's hope that BMW doesn't go the way of their MINI brand a make nothing but noisy inline 4's.

A pure EV 1 series would be sweet.

I wouldn't dismay too much about the I6: there is no reason such an engine cannot be used in vehicles such as the 3,5,7, and X5/6 as a high performance engine while still achieving ~27mpg combined. Simple refinements such as auto start/stop and more/taller gears will let the N54 shine.

Most of the I4s BMW will produce will be diesels. That's not a bad thing! BMW makes fantastic diesel fours.

Also, the rumored gasoline I4 is supposedly high rev. In order to go high rev and meet emissions standards they will have to ditch mechanical VVT in favor of electronically actuated valves. Sweet!

I uderstand what BMW is trying to do but i hope this change doesn't effect the future of the 7 series power plant or the 6 series. We BMW fans love that award winning inline 6 their is not another I6 nor V6 engine out there that competes with that engine and you know they were great when you have other car manufacturers wanting to buy the I6 engine...GMC was one...they were in the works a few months ago but i think the deal is NULL AND VOID by now. they make a hell of an I6 and the V8.
