BMW reveals its future plans, new X1, GranTurismo, Mini SUV and RR Coupe confirmed
BMW CEO Norbert Reithofer has spilled the beans on the carmaker’s future plans with the release of a document today outlining its official strategy up until 2020. According to the document, BMW hopes to sell up to 1.8 million vehicles by 2012 and sees increased volumes as the key to improved profitability. THATS IT?! WTF! I thought there was going to be some cool new models announced like a 2 and 4-series. WE DON"T NEED AN X1! The Granturismo sounds cool but there are going to need more than just that to stay ahead of the competition. Hopefully this release does not include their other plans for a Z8 (or Z6 w/e) and the V-series (don't do it!). I hate waiting.

These are plans till year 2012.

1er coupe, 1er cabrio already coming. X6 Sports Activity Coupe is also said by BMW officials to come next year. V-series is actually F-series, and mentioned in BMW strategy review as "Progressive Activity Sedan", and also announced as an upcoming product. X1 will be a compact SAV - for Euro markets mainly. 4dr GT is a CS Concept based car, and will probably be badged as 8-series.

So, 6 completely new models will be introduced in the next 4 years. Not enough?

Add all the facelifts and redesigns coming in the following years (eg. Z4, 7er, 5er, 6er, 1er hatch, X3), and you'll realize BMW will be very busy in the next years.

But be sure a lot of new models will come after 2012 as well (eg. Z2, Z8, M10, F3, X4, X2 etc).

Regarding MINI: Clobman shooting brake is already here, redesigned cabrio & completely new MINI SAV are coming. MINI coupe probably after 2012.

RR: Phantom coupe - mind a 101EX Concept ! - is coming (Cabrio already here). Also a new model positioned under the Phantom was announced - also coming by 2012.

And do not forget plans for a 4th brand that is considered to be included in BMW Group portfolio.

Plenty of new cars from BMW Group int the next years!

That's why they are so confident to sell 1.8 million cars per year by 2012, and way over 2 million cars per year by 2020.

This will be interesting.

Won't the X1 compete with the Mini SUV? Will BMW truely commit to the PAS vehicle (sport-tourer) more so than M-B did with the R-class? And will the smaller Rolls-Royce continue the exceptional brand perception?

So many questions abound....

No. MINI SAV will be really mini. ;-) With a typical MINI funky & retro design. While X1 will be typical BMW in design, and also positioned a bit higher than MINI SAV. Also the cars will have completely different characters.

PAS: check the spy pics (media are labeling this car as LuxurySportsCruiser, RFK, V- or F-series): the car is a huge fastback with a slightly raised roof. Nothing similar to R-class.

Baby RR: it will still cost 200k Euro at least! The design will be more modern & futuristic than the Phantom's design. Yet featuring typical RR design trademarks & design cues. And it's production will be limited - mainly due a small production capacity which won't be increased much - in a manner to retain exclusivity of the product.

Isn't the R-class a huge fastback with a slightly raised roof (short wheelbase version).

I doubt that the "baby" Roller will be over 200K Euros. That would be a good $250K, which doesn't make sense. It's going to compete with the Bentley Continentals.

@dumpsty

PAS is not as high, and also has much more fastback-like tail with sharply sloping tail window - contributing to very coupeish appearence. While the R-class has more wagon-like / van-like tail with upright tail window & door.

Put PAS along with R-class and you'll realize R-class looks much more van-like, when PAS is much more sedan / hatch / coupe like.

ok. Will it be the size of the Pacifica, but 100% more sporty with BMW characteristics? The GM Lambda-based crossovers drawf the Pacifica in height and length. If the Pacific were more sporty-like and had a better interior, it would have sold better.

can't wait to see some spy pics.

BMW needs something to compete against the RAV4, I'm just waiting to see what they release to go up against the Yaris.
