BMW's M6 Gets Put On Notice- Audi's 570 HP RS5 Caught On US Soil

Our spies have finally spotted a real prototype for the upcoming Audi RS5 while doing hot weather testing on US soil.

Except for the absence of the oval tailpipes – that would make it way too obvious – the car’s front skirt gives the model away as an RS.

Once it goes on sale, the production model will be sporting wide, oval dual exhaust outlets – a signature of Audi’s RS series of cars.

If Audi doesn't use the wider fenders I bet this car won't sell. I love Audi's but this car here is not as pretty as the plain S5 or even the A5. yeah, they are claiming that it can beat an M6 but who cares? Approximately 90% of the potential owners will never actually race their cars anyway.

In my opinion, Audi needs to continue focusing on making beautiful cars and leave this hp war to the posers at bmw and merc (flame on).

Surely you jest, but I will play along. So if BMW and Merc are posers, who is the real deal?

my thing is that why everything that AUDI makes they feel they have to go after BMW every time thats getting a little old to me. so if they want to compare a twin turbo V10 then let BMW twin turbo their V10 then it will be an even match-up. but im gettin sick of audi whenever they do a little performance upgrade to their car, trucks or whatever they have to put BMW out there no other luxury car company but BMW they are not your only competeion AUDI but they are making it out like they are.

just because someone on Autospies says Audi is 'going after bmw' dosen't mean that was the plan. The article is not correct on about 300 facts.

1. remember prototye will not show you what the design will look like.

2. no way the V10 is going on the RS5

B7fan- There is a long long history of the Germans competing against each other. A lot of the motivation is pride of their industry and their accomplishments.

So in many cases bragging rights are at stake. With that thought in mind you have to realize in general they are always trying to one up themselves.

agent009 I know what your saying and thats all fine why dont they go after porsche and mercedes or something. WHY BMW all the time even last week when they compared the X6 or X5 to the cayenne or the M3 to the S4 and RS4 like everything with them seems like a personal vendetta towards BMW every time. I mean I know they're the sh*t but damn...lolol

agree with B7FAN,
i m cool with Audi always go after BMW, but i really think if they really want to overtake the Bimmer, try not to always use bigger engine or turbo and stuff.

The article is wrong on the following grounds.
1. RS5 is not a competitor to the M6 but rather a competitor to the E92 M3.
2. The RS5 will not have a TT V10, the TT V10 is for the RS6
3. The RS5 will have the same either the same V8 in the RS4 or some iteration of that engine. A TT 4.2 litre V8 or tuned version of the 4.2 litre V8.

That remains to be seen.

However don't forget the TT RS is rumored to have the 4.2 liter V8 or even the supercharged V6. So the RS5 seems to fit better than the M6 at this time.

AdmiralT20 - why would the M3 be comparable S5? the S5 is a grand tourer and the M3 isn't. yes the S5 is smaller than the 6 series but it is still a GT.

1dott8,

I am sure you meant the RS5.
While should the RS5 be compared to the E92 M3, because the RS5 is the coupe version of the RS4.
The E90 M3 competes with the RS4, and the RS5 competes with the E92 M3.

No Audi has ever been a worthy competitor to BMW's M cars. I wish they would come up with one, it would help to further distinguish Germany as the preeminent automobile producer.

never been a worth competitor? The RS4 was considered superior than the M3 when it debuted, same with the RS6 both current & previous. They are more than capable & in some cases better in my opinion.

@aarononymous

Why ??!! Just because of AWD, HP and lots of red lights inside ?! Audi might have more of those (today!!) but a BMW is NOT about anything like that. BMW is about engine engineering. Is about fun and rewarding handling. All BMWs are using dedicated platforms and are not sharing it with lower end cars. All BMW cars are sport sedans or coupes. And about all BMWs interiors, I can tell you, is, that for someone who was driving them since '80s, that someone will feel at home in any given MY or model BMW. And one more thing... Go drive a 10 years old BMW and also drive a 10 year old VW, and while inside the car, at least listen to every sound the car makes. Tell us THEN, about what you heard and your experience...

aarononymousaarononymous - 8/28/2008 8:19:59 PM
0 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
engine engineering? RS4 4.2 engine stacks up pretty good to pretty much anything. RS6 V10 is a beast, but I guess Audi cheats by using turbochargers, nobody else uses forced induction, right?

RS4 & RS6 aren't exactly pigs when it comes to handling, might not whip the tail out, but like I've said drifting isn't the fastest way around a track is it?

Maybe we should forget what they are doing now & in the future & focus on the past?????

I've owned OLD BMW's and Audi's and VW's. I thought we are talking about Audi & BMW????

The Audi's & BMW's feel like solid german sedans. The 97 Jetta I had felt more basic, but served its purpose better than any car I've had.

The RS5 should beat the M3, its a different segment. The 5 is more of a 6 series competitor in my eyes, both are only in 2 door versions. The RS4 is an M3 competitor.

Richard34, the S5 has a front/rear distribution of 57.7/42.3. That is far from even in my book.

They A5 has a 284 lb discrepency between the front and rear of the car so stop with the BS that they are nearly balanced. And, if you don't think that is a lot of weight just have a couple of your friends hang on to the front of a shopping cart at the grocery store and then try to steer it. For anyone who still thinks that Quattro helps you steer you need to go to the library and check out "Going Faster" to learn the physics of the traction circle.

For reference, the 7 Series has a difference of 9 lbs. total between the front and rear!! Just 9 lbs. on a much larger car! That is the kind of dedication to engineering excellence that cannot be faked with marketing gimmicks.

according to Edmunds, yahoomotors, car & driver and EVO the weight distribution is 51/49. It is true that the sites may be incorrect but the only true way to know is to go to our local dealers and play.

Static weight distribution is great when the car is sitting still, and why don't the more performace-oriented BMW's have such tight weight distribution?

50/50 weight distribution sounds good on paper & BMW may have an advantage there, but a lot of it's marketing. Chassis tuning & dynamic weight distribution is just as important.

What is "dynamic weight distribution"? Does the weight slosh about front to back or something?

All cars have weight transfer, that's why it's important to have the mass of the car low, centered between the wheels, and balanced front to rear. When you brake hard, you don't want too much weight over the front which would create dive; when changing direction you want a low polar-moment of inertia; when accelerating you need some weight over the rear wheels when the weight shifts backward. A 911 with lots of its weight over the rear is great for braking and great for accelerating and takes great skill and lots of tires for turning. Having more weight up front is good for nothing but creating understeer, brake dive, and wheel spin on launch.

1dott8, back in 2001, the sport version of the A4 the S4 competed against the M3, but Audi was tied of getting its butt beat so they brought out the RS4 to the states, that RS4's equivalent to the M3 was the CSL. A higher level of M3 (the highest), just like the RS4 and RS5 are the highest level of the A4 and A5.

If the A4/A5 is the competitor to the 3 series sedan and coupe, it would stand to reason, what the S4/s5 is ad the RS version of such are and which BMW that they compete with.

BMW never had a competitor to the S models from Audi till the 335i. All the RS models from Audi competed with the M3 since the RS2. The CSL was only available as E46 model and competed with the Porsche GT3.

1993 - E36 M3 280hp
1994 - RS2 315hp
1999 - RS4 380hp
2000 - E46 M3 343hp
2005 - RS4 420hp
2007 - E90 M3 420hp

The S models where always a step below the BMW M models, it's just that Audi was sometimes faster with upping the bounderies with their S models that they came close to the M BMW's. This was incase of the 220hp S2 in 1989 compared to the 200hp M3 and the 344hp S4 in 2001 compared to the 343hp M3.

the funny thing is that, all the S model are cheaper than M cars, and all the M cars are cheaper than RSs.
