BMWUSA Marketing: What we built vs. what you built
I have just received an email regarding an amazing online campaign ( Link ) that BMW is running. What BMW did was to ask all the BMW lovers, fans or fanatics, to send it some photos of their modded BMW 3 Series.

This has to be one of the best marketing ideas I have seen in a while from BMW, and it is a great way to recognize the large, loyal and amazing BMW community. We have seen over the past months several photos of amazingly modded bimmers and having the opportunity to be featured on the BMWUSA.com website and have your 5 minutes(or more) of fame, it’s a small reward that BMW could give to those that spend hours and tons of money to make their BMW even better or stand out even more.

To answer in advance the obvious question of “How do I submit my photos” ,from what I heard, BMWNA has contacted the people that have their photos featured on the website, through BMW forums, blogs, portals and other online entities. This proves one more time that BMW indeed follows the community and keeps an eye on everything that is going on in the bimmer world.

This is absolultey a nice touch by BMW and I congratulate them!

We are also proud that our friends at Ind-Distribution have been featured three times, as seen in the photos below. Mike from Ind-Dist does an amazing job when it comes to BMWs and some of his work can be seen here and here.

Did you even look at the site? You make yourself look so foolish. Swapping wheels doesn't hurt your warranty (BMW makes them), adding a tasteful aerokit doesn't hurt your warranty (BMW makes them), installing a short shifter doesn't hurt your warranty (BMW makes them), adding an exhaust or intake doesn't hurt your warranty (BMW makes them).

Anyway, it is an incredible campaign that shows how passionate the owners are, how passionate BMW is, and how connected BMW is to the owners. Nicely Done!

certain Audi dealers have been doing this for a while and if they do the work it will not effect the warranty.

You also don't have to get your car serviced/repaired at the dealership to maintain your warranty. Hell, dealerships don't know how to fix cars anymore...they can only fix it if the problem has a code.

If BMW is encouraging pimping their rides, then they should back it up with continued warranty coverage. I find it odd that BMW would associate themselves with the same class as Civic pimpers. If it's the ultimate driving machine, then what's there to mod?

there are lots of ways to modify your BMW...and many of the elements are made by BMW. i've changed plenty of details on mine...

this is a good strategy indeed. good for the young professionals who are sporty enthusiasts and want to show their pride off by showing BMW themselves how they customized their cars as a community of some sort

" If it's the ultimate driving machine, then what's there to mod?" stop taking everything so literal. makes you look like an idiot

Really! Now that's funny. Take a read of European Car magazine to see the many moded Audis. Not to mention all the after mareket tuning companies that cater to Audi enthusiasts and all the meets that take place around the country and in Europe! Damn, get clue already!

I think Audi does pretty good in Lemans & DTM, but I could be wrong. As for people modding their Audi's..people mod every turbo-charged car, genius.

it's actually very smart marketing....owners who LOVE their cars are the best spokespeople. this idea wouldn't work with a brand whose owners don't care very much about their cars.

Exactly, they also tend to be the trendsetters, their friends will tend to ask them for car advice, especially when car shopping. A great built in referral base

s4 thank goodness there are some with objective minds. Not this is better cause its this company comments. even though you are an audi fan (nothing wrong with that I am too) you recognize nice good performing and good quality cars as well.
PS still cant decide on the s5 or 335 have a few months to go though

Well, it depends on what you want. Do you really want the looks of the S5? If it's not a big issue for you I'd go with the 335i (coupe I assume), because they're both quite attractive, but I have to say that the body of the S5 alone is worth $50K. Sex on wheels.

If BMW-NA wants BMW fans to pimp out there BMW's they need to offer a larger assorment of BMW accessories(wheels, big brake kits, exhaust, chips) or work with a aftermarket company where their parts wont void the warranty.

I know about ALPINA,DINAN, RACING DYNAMICS, HAMANN, all are great aftermarket companies but how about some actual certified BMW accessories like what these aftermarket companies do.

GET A CLUE! Go into any BMW dealership, they have performance modification brochures! These came out late last fall! Big break kits, re-gearing the rear. intakes, exhausts, bodykits, strut bars, sport suspensions, wheels, trim peices exterior and interior!

The reason people do not know about this:
1. It isnt marketed on their homesite well
2. people assume accessories from OEM are overpriced
3. It isnt marketed anywhere on the web, more underground

I think it is a good move.
