Back in black - Saab Turbo X
What do AMG, Penthouse, Johnny Walker, AC/DC and Saab have in common, aside from the ability to bring joy to a man’s life in one way shape or form? It’s the colour black…which strictly speaking isn’t really a colour but we won’t let that worry us now. Read Article

I'll be right behind you if they get rid of the turbo and give me a supercharger instead. Saab has always had really comfortable seats. I hope this is not a manual only model as I insist on an automatic transmission.

Automatic? I think the 9-3 Linear comes in automatic and those are on sale right now. If it's gonna be a bad boy, it's gotta come in that manual "Yack 'em Stick"!

EnnNorak why do you prefer the supercharger over the turbo? A supercharger works off the crank shaft so it takes power to make power. This is fine in a big engine such as a v-8 or big v-6. A turbo works off of the exhaust gases to spool. The down side is the lag.In my personal opinion you are better off with the turbo in the saab than the supercharger.

I prefer superchargers because they have no turbo lag and I don't trust turbos for reliability as they are continuously exposed to very high temperatures. Furthermore, given the competitive pressures in the industry and lack of full disclosure of technical details, I have no idea how cheaply any given turbo might be made. Early turbos had unbelievable bearing failures and basically cooked unless they were driven gently for a cool-down period before shutting off the engine. Later, turbos appeared with fairly reliable separate cooling systems but I still don't trust them. Superchargers give you much more power boost. Actually, I prefer large-displacement normally aspirated DOHC engines.
