Bentley Arnage to get Bugatti Veyron W16 engine
According to latest reports Bentley has developed a prototype Arnage powered by Bugatti’s mammoth 8.0L W16 quad-turbo engine, with all 1001hp being sent directly to the rear wheels. While such a huge amount of power without AWD might prove difficult to handle, a detuned version could be successful as a limited edition model for the many Bentley customers looking for something special with their customization. Doesn't this seriously contradict the rumor that the next iteration will be hybrid-powered?

How well this goes over is contingent upon the perception of the origin of the engine.

Upper crust Bentley owners are particularly sensitive to exogenous origins for parts since VW took over. The Arnage at the moment has a true Rolls Royce engine in it.

And it's a lesser (in many ways) vehicle for that fact...

cdoke, and I'd rather have the Bentley Arnage engine as the current RR does not have iron cylinder liners.

Rolls-Royce shares a platform with the BMW 7 Series, as well as its twelve-cylinder engine, but with different displacement. Your point? How is that any worse than sharing a platform and a W12 with the Audi A8L but adding twin-turbos, extra length, different styling and an ultra-luxury interior?

"Rolls-Royce shares a platform with the BMW 7 Series"

Er...mmm... which Rolls Royce would that be? The Phantom is built on its own aluminium space frame platform. Granted, the platform is build in a BMW factory in Germany.

Putting that behemouth on a 7 series platform would be like trying to support a whale on Children's Red Flyer.

I was quite sure that it's based on a stretched 7 Series platform... do you have a link?

As long as there is an 'economic' case to be made...

NEVER!

I think perhaps only the 2 turbos...or none at all.

Keep hp under 500 and everyone's happy.

This will have worse traction than a Brabus E Class or Dodge Viper; it won't even get off the line.

Rubbish!! That W16 is a Bugatti engine only. Bentley will keep on using their beautiful 6 and 3/4 litre V8 with twin-turbos. Currently Bentley engineers are doing everything they can to keep that iconic engine alive. Britain has lost so many iconic engines already (Jag V12, Rover V8, ..etc) and I would find it sad if the legendary Bentley V8 would be killed of as well.
