Bet You Can't Guess What Cars Were The Most Recalled In 2007

It's been the kind of year when the total number of recalls almost seemed to match auto industry production figures.
In August, Ford Motor Co. announced it was recalling 3.6 million vehicles, mostly trucks from the 1990s, to fix a speed control deactivation switch.

Last spring, Volkswagen started recalling more than 1,000,000 new VW Beetles from model years 2001 to 2007 to repair a brake light problem.

Even Toyota recalled 533,124 units of its 2004-2007 Sequoia and its 2004-2006 Tundra, citing problems with the lower ball joint on the vehicles' front suspension.

The Top Ten Recalled Cars For 2007

1. Volkswagen New Beetle

Model year(s): 2001- 2007

Ford spokesman Dan Jarvis describes his company's huge August recall as one example of a voluntary approach.

"It was not a new recall," he said. "Earlier recalls occurred because we were working with NHTSA and they were investigating some under-the-hood fires. But the most recent recall was not in that category. NHTSA did not have a safety concern."

"But we did not want our customers to worry about the safety of their vehicles just because there were some similar parts involved."

good move by Ford...preventative safety...not an actual recall.

Ford needs to get their act straight. They don't have the best reputation when it comes to recalls. Remember the Ford Pinto scandal back in the 70's when they preferred to save a few bucks and let people burn to death rather than spend like $11 per car and solve the problem?

Probably has something to do with when the notices go out. I noticed some of the Toyota ones are not on there, the notices go out in February.

Another note. If you notice the Wrangler/Nitro was actually on the list twice. Instead of just numbers, how many number of recalls per car were there? And severity.

The largest recall is listed for "Repair a brake light switch that may malfunction if installed incorrectly." note the "if installed incorrectly" part. So it's probably a quick fix.

Something like "Wheel sensors may not have been properly installed and may not fully seal hub assembly, creating risk that wheels may corrode and fall off." or "Replace air filter, which may ignite if it comes into contact with hot object." would be more severe to me.

well a non-functioning brake light can be just as dangerous. especially for people that experience plenty rain/fog...

once it threatens safety, regardless of supposed "quick fix", it is rightfully belonging to the recall list.

fastone,
Sorry to rain on your parade, but double check the model years. The NEW Tundra is a MY2007, the recalls were for the last gen (approx 150K per year).

Guru,
Tata should only hope that someone buys them out, they can't even fight off Suzuki in their home market (for whatever reason, Suzuki owns 50% of the Indian market). Bet you didn't know that.
http://in.ibtimes.com/articles/20071205/maruti-suzuki-car-hyundai-tata-motors-honda-toyota-nissan.htm

Jeffy,
Don't worry, BMW had its share of recalls too. all priced at over $50,000 and all for rather important saftey features. BMW doesn't show up because they don't sell enough cars.

5, 6, X5 electrical causing engine stall, 29,000 units. The autobahn becomes a lot less safe when your engine cuts out.
http://www.autospider.org/index.php/2007/10/22/bmw-recalls-29250-sedans-suvs-to-fix-engine-stalls/
Pro-rate it to 8x (since Toyota outsells BMW by that) and you have 240,000 recalls per year.

X5 brakes, 6600 units
http://www.automotive.com/2007/12/bmw/x5/recalls/index.html

6 series airbags, 225 units (probably half their sales)

lol the article talks about Ford recalling 3.6 millions, but then Ford disapears from the list. I think if AutoSpies wants to be a professional website, it needs to make these numbers formal and not just adding few here and there from what articles they've read.

Also, no car is perfect but when you hear about recall you need to look for two things, the size of the problem, and how quickly did the company report it. This what determines a good quality from bad, and in over all the Japanese and Germen lead the way.

Why split hairs about whether recalls were for this or that? Fact is a recall is a recall and VW made it to No. 1 because they haven't made reliable cars for a long time.

Toyota following on the heels of VW is not surprising they have been riding on their 'rep' and below the radar for a while but they can no longer hide under their bullet proof umbrella of 'quality'.

The others who fill out the list, esepcially Dodge/Jeep already had a track record of spotty quality.

First of all YogaGuru is a funny guy. Keep up the good work! :)

As cars become more complicated recalls will become more common. Typically recalls occur due to a bad or defective part from a distributer or 3rd party parts supplier. It is rarely an occurance to actual engineering of the vehicle.

fastone,
Do you even read the articles that you ref? You know any other sources other than autospies?

Anyway, let's take a looky shall we?

1. As I've said before, I don't know who's making these fuel pumps/tubes etc, but everyone has had too many of these recalled. However, if you want to see bad, check out BMW's recalls over the last 4 yrs. Mostly transmission and brakes, some engine and shocks (there's even a fuel pump problem there too).
http://www.motortrend.com/used_cars/recalls/01/bmw/

2. 15000/yr Tundra recalls is still lower than 29,000/yr BMW recalls considering on average these BMW's cost about $10K more. There were probably more Tundras sold than those 3 combined.
"The shaft was improperly heat treated. No injuries or accidents have been connected to the recall."
Meaning worker error, not engineering error.

3. 470,000 recalls over a span of 5 years, with cars beginning production 8 years ago. 300 reported problems, 1 accident may have been the result.

4. Bad transmissions. Hmm, 5800 units and 90 reported problems. If you read the article, you'd know it expired. Here's another source though, you might want to try using them sometime. Problem found, problem fixed.
http://www.autoweek.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060502/FREE/60501008/1024/LATESTNEWS
"The same transmission is used in Lexus ES 350, but a later production start date meant the problem was caught before production began."

5. Tailgate. I can't comment since the article link nolonger works. However, if you're driving with the tailgate down, it's obvious your load is bigger than the bed, thereby the majority of the weight sits on the bed. The shock absorber actually sounds quite clever.

Did you want to see if you can find some more headlines, and possible read them too?

Hey huuey... Why are we suddenly discussing BMW here?! They aren't even on the list... Unlike Toyota... And your way of calculating is just incredible... So BMW had 240.000 relative recalls... Is that what you are saying... That is just pathetic! Obviously just looking for something to slam BMW for... Again... Pathetic!

I always have a great day after Autospies :P

Sailor,
Mentioning MB's recalls was too easy and VW speaks for itself. They fail to see that this is absolute numbers, not relative to sales. When Toyota builds more cars than Germany, of course a recall will have higher abolute numbers.

They just can't accept that in relative terms, an off year for Toyota is still better than the best years for the Germans (Toyota/Lexus now outperforming and out teching and simply outdoing them just adds insult to injury).

You might understand this though. BMW sold 80K 5, 6 and X5s and 29000 were recalled. That's about a 37.5% rate.
http://www.bmwcca.org/node/6479
Toyota recalled 15000 of 200,000 '07 Tundras. Ouch, that hurts, 7.5% recall rate.

I'd like to see a comparison between Toyota and Germany. VW by itself is enough to drag Germany down when compared to Toyota, then you have to add in the dismal quality of the big 3.
