I hooked up my accelerator to my brake lights. I hit the gas, people behind me stop, and I'm gone.

Blind people can’t see or hear... hybrids
With everyone treating the Toyota Prius like the iPod of the automotive industry and as auto makers rush to get hybrids out on the market, it seems like not everyone is green-happy.

Hybrids are under attack by the blind who say that hybrids are way to quiet at slower speeds posing a threat to those who rely on getting along by hearing whether or not it’s safe to cross the street...

Now I think I'm pretty well known for being quite sceptical towards hybrids, but this is SILLY, and I repeat SIL-LY! If you can't hear a hybrid, you won't hear a BMW E420CDI sneaking around town at low revs!
People who drive silent cars (like everybody else) should pay attention to pedestrians, especially blind people! Doesn't most countries traffic laws actually state that YOU (as a driver) have to stop for pedestrians crossing the road?

What a stupid argument!

Don't underestimate the blind. There once was a blind man who picked up a hammer and saw.

I predict that one day we will demolish all our old cities one by one as they are replaced by properly planned futuristic cities where people work at the core and live in developments that form concentric circles around the core. There will be sheltered moving sidewalks for walking to work. Most will simply work out of their home and be connected via the Internet.

this is a genuine problem.

and you're being really inconsiderate guys. perhaps you don't live in urban areas, but the blind get along just fine with crosswalks that beep and other such assists. and except for hybrids, they know when it's safe to cross. as an example...if they can't hear a car, how would they know it's not turning right on red?

i sighted, but i've nearly been hit by some nit wit in a prius flying around a corner in a parking garage.

it's a problem that needs to be addressed.

Well this problem falls back to the driver. Not hard to spot a blind person with a walking stick or dog.

I guess hybrid drivers need to roll down the windows and blast car stero really really loud, eh? Would that solve this problem? How about a vibrating cane for blind person when hybrid drives near by?

would the writer of the article prefer Harleys with STRAIGHT PIPES that you can hear from 3 miles away!!???

as the rider of a QUIET, FAST honda, it annoys me NO END that hogs which make more NOISE than power pollute the atmosphere. even more annoying than those rolling jukeboxes with thundering bass you hear ONLY from a few blocks away!

OLD domestic pickups with LOUD exhausts (and most UNsporty handling and performance) are also a major annoyance.

If I can hear an RX400h's motor whirrr, I'm pretty sure a blind person will hear it.

But aren't they conditioned to cross when the beeps/chirp go off? If they j-walk, yes, it still is up to the driver to be paying attention to the road (except for BMW drivers as they'll be too busy making sure everyone noticed their propellor).

The onus is completely on the driver to make sure they stop at intersections, since the blind are have not choice but to put "blind" faith that we're competent drivers (except BMW drivers since BMW's 50/50 balance will automatically veer out of the way).

still doesn't situation such as making a right on red. duh.

and i find that lexus drivers are the most clueless. they're usually so out of touch with the road that they're dangerous. not to mention many of them are so advanced in age that they shouldn't be driving anymore.
