Bmw 118d advanced diesel named 2008 World Green Car
The selection committee for the 2008 World Car Awards announced today that the European BMW 118d Advanced Diesel was named the 2008 World Green Car. Tom Purves, President and CEO of BMWNA, accepted the honor on behalf of BMW at the award reception, which was held this morning at the 2008 New York International Auto Show.
“We are honored to receive the 2008 World Green Car Award for the BMW 118d,” said Mr. Purves. “As a company we have been committed to reducing fuel consumption and emissions of our vehicles, while at the same time improving performance. This commitment is the driving force of our Efficient Dynamics platform and the philosophy behind BMW’s vehicle designs and development of technologies such as the Advanced Diesel implemented in the 118d. This honor will inspire BMW’s continuing efforts to reduce its carbon footprint.” The BMW 118d is a four-door hatchback powered by a 1.8-liter, four-cylinder diesel engine and is not a model that is available in the U.S.

Gobama ... the real answers to your questions.
1.what car company has won quality awards 10 years in a row? Actually that would be toyota or honda. What do you mean by quality awards, anyways?
2.Which company makes the best interiors? In the luxury car market, audi is know for their interiors. Audi actually over the last 5 years, build the best interiors of all brands. This is according to pretty much every magazine editor the has ever written about cars. Lexus usually doesnt finish in the top 2.
3. What company has the smoothest engines? In regards to smoothness and balance the BMW inline 6cyl has been the Best engine for the last decade. BMW has more Engine of the Year awards than any car Manufacturer for the past 10 years. I believe BMW is at 19 to be exact. Lexus has won 1 time.
4. What company makes the quietest cabins and engines? Lexus is up there. although the IS isnt that quiet nor is the GS. If we are going to consider all manufacturers, then I would have to go with Bentley on that one. Lexus would be a close second.
5. which company is considered the cleanest luxury brand? That would not be Lexus. Actually BMW is the leading candidate for luxury brands. Not only for their low emission diesel engines, or the Hydrogen car, but for their paint facility that uses the energy from landfills to fuel the facitilty. THe BMW plant is the leading technology in reducing polution. It has won the award by the EPA , 3 years in a row. Lexus is nowhere to be found. Lexus has a couple hybrid cars, which have been proven to provide no real economical savings as compared to their gas counterparts ....
Keep drinking your lexus cool-aid. That sugar rush is a killer.

budfrog - wrong 118d. The newest, EfficientDynamics equipped one gets:
119g/km, 51 US mpg, 0-62 8.6 seconds.
So it's even better.
http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/specs/Detail.aspx?deriv=36734
And the IS220d does not get 44 US mpg - it gets 44 imperial, which is about 36 US. The IS is the least fuel efficient and most polluting in its class. (A4 2.0 tdi, C220cdi and 320d all get lower emissions and better mpg).
http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/specs/Detail.aspx?deriv=32502
The site I got that info from is completely independent.

Some of us do have jobs you know.
No need to copy and paste on this one. Unlike you German fan automatons, I put thought into each new, different thread. I cant help it that we have had like 12 articles about the new MBZ diesel SUVs.
As for this win, let me confound you with rational thinking.
Pluses...Seems like a decent engine. Decent mpg, not a huge loss in performance, low CO2, stop-start technology (thank you Toyota)
Minuses...They mention nothing about cost (of the cleaner diesel engine and of diesel fuel), emissions that at best will achieve T2B5 (how much do you hate me now T2B5 T2B5 T2B5 T2B5).
But to me the biggest problem is that how much better is this really than a comparable gasoline engine? If BMW were to combine stop-start with a direct injected gas engine and light weight materials, they would achieve similar performance using a cheaper fuel that could probably be CARB certified PZEV. But you Euros are so hung up on diesels that you cant see this.
And you dont even need a hybrid. Cant tell you how much that would improve the situation.

they are choosing car that was introduce for this year . when there wasn`t any hybrid with small engine introduced in 2007,2008 they couldn`t choose it . e.g. they couldn`t choose toyota prius even if it the greenest car becouse it wasn`t introduced this year . if no that rule they can choosing this same car in every year with would be nonsense .

Take current technology (start-stop, regenerative braking, diesel engine), give it a fancy marketable name and watch it suddenly become the best green technology out there according to this bunch.
I don't know how Europeans do match, but 104g from the Prius I thought was less than 119g from the 118d, and the Prius is a larger vehicle.
So why isn't this car available in the US if its so great and clean? BMW realizes that people are unwilling to pay over $30,000 for an ecnonomy car?
WCOTY still sounds cheesy (yes, it sounded cheesy when Lexus won it). Shouldn't a world car be required to be sold "world wide"?
Rupert,
When the EPA rates the 118d, then I'll believe 51mpg. Your source probably never left the highway.
Did you know the 118d 3-door (non new age Efficiency Dynamic version) is $18,350 in the UK (and rates 62mpg) that's $600 more than a Prius that rates 65mpg (46mpg combined 2008 EPA). BMW must be laughing all the way to the bank.

Huu ... why isnt the car available in the US? BMW is bringing diesels to the US in the fall of this year. Why the wait? had to do with emissions in the US and making sure they had a car that was 50 state compliant. BMW did not want to make the mistake and bring diesels early if they were not going to be able to be sold in all 50 states, especially California.
If hte Prius is so green, then what does one do with the batteries when they expire in about 8 years? The prius doesnt get 65mpg. According to 2008 EPA the toyota prius gets 48 city / 45 highway.

Rupert,
What, you mean the WCOTY can't meat US emission regulations? What good is that?
They could always try NOT to pollute, that usually helps. (Hybrids don't create unnecessary excess pollution, this means they don't have to come up with a gimmick or scheme to hide it. What a concept!).
Are you sure? I didn't see on their website a 5-door version of the 118d pictured.
Ummm, according to your source, the Prius gets Toyota's 65mpg claim as well (are you sure they actually tested the cars?)
http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/specs/Detail.aspx?deriv=26821
I've shown countless times that the 2008 EPA standards actually make diesel perform worse because of the added city driving.
I always that EURANCAP was your standard (maybe that's just on safety).
Oh yeah, the Prius has more storage room too, so autobilde has no reason to favour BMW now ;)
BMW 10m turning circle vs Prius' 5m? I'm starting to question the reliability of your source (or Toyota really is that good).
Hold on! The IS220d is a larger class vehicle than the 118d, I remembered the IS220d outdoing (overall) all the Audi diesels.
Spellchecker,
Nope, if they put it in a sedan, I'll knock it too. Diesels only belong in work vehicles/SUVs and even then they don't need more than 6 cylinders except in extreme cases).
Amzinbimmer,
My Jeep's a bit more upscale. Wouldn't be caught dead in an A3. The A3/B/1 have "too much effort" written all over them.

The website I used isn't a 'testing' site, it puts all the data in one place to make it easier to compare.
EuroNCAP is just for safety, I don't know the name of the body that tests fuel economy, EU-something I guess.
And the IS220d does not out-do the Audi diesels.
Audi A4 2.0 tdi:
51 UK mpg, 144g/km CO2
http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/specs/Detail.aspx?deriv=38572
Lexus IS220d:
44 mpg, 168g/km CO2
http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/specs/Detail.aspx?deriv=32502
Those are the official figures, so are an easy way of comparing them, as they give no advantage to a particular car. A reason the Lexus suffers is the fact it weighs over 120 kilos more than the A4. I'll give you that the IS is about 0.5 seconds faster to 60, but it is worse overall. The A4 isn't even the ''best' engine wise in its class, the 3 series is.
BMW 320d (177 hp version):
58 UK mpg, 128 g/km and it's the fastest (7.7 to 60)
http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/specs/Detail.aspx?deriv=38233
BMW 1 series tech data, for the 5 door, on the BMW UK website:
http://www.bmw.co.uk/bmwuk/pricesandspecifications/0,,1156___bs-MQ%3D%3D%40bb-S08%3D%40sit-bmwuk,00.html
You'll see that the 118d emits 119g/km and gets 62 UK mpg combined.

"The Prius was beaten in a head to head drubbing against the 520d."
no it wasn`t though 520d is very economical for diesel(it has regenerative braking). prius "burn" fewer energy (diesel is densier than petrol) and is much "cleaner" . it do that despite fewer effeciency present petrol engines than diesel engines . in future petrol will have that same effeciency as diesel(e.g. HCCI , DiesOtto) so for what someone would want diesels then
"Your Frugal Olympics is some irrelevant point system from nearly 4 years ago."

What about this from Autoblog:
BMW 520d beats Prius in gas mileage
Posted Mar 23rd 2008
Readers of London's Sunday Times kept telling the auto reporters that the official mileage numbers for the Prius were overstated by about 15 imperial mpg. Intrigued, the Times decided to test things out by running a Prius against a BMW 520d with regenerative braking from London to Geneva, a 460-mile trip. Then they added 100 miles of urban running to give the Prius a chance to recover ground on its proper turf.
The verdict: the conventional diesel with Efficient Dynamics beat the full hybrid by 2.2 imperial mpg, or 1.8 US mpg. This means that an executive sedan with all the mod-cons and 500 extra pounds beat the mollusk-shaped sip-tastic wunderkind known as the Prius. And the diesel's CO2 emissions are just 32 g/km higher than the hybrid poster-child, to boot.
Admittedly, we find the test a bit unfair -- the Prius is not meant show its muscle at "75-mph into a headwind," and adding 100 miles of urban driving doesn't make up for 460 miles of autoroute. Reverse those driving conditions and then let's see who won. Still, for all of us diesel fans out there, it's a feather we won't mind putting in the cap. Thanks for the tip, George!

2006 - Diesel autos captured 51% of all new car registrations in Western Europe, and it was said that diesel market penetration had peaked in Europe.
2007 - Diesel autos captured 53% of all new car registrations in Western Europe. Some countries such as Austria and France registered over 70% diesel powered purchases, while the U.S. is at around 3%, because we're so much smarter. Biodiesel is the number one renewable fuel, world wide, and it doesn't reduce fuel economy like ethanol-fueled gassers.
According to some hybrid proponents on this board, all these Europeans make stupid decisions, because an old technology like compression-ignition could not have advanced to clean, efficient, refined machines worthy for over 50% of all new car buyers in Europe. Even though spark-ignition technology is older than diesel, hybrid proponents claim that diesel is too old a technology to combine with electric drive, yet they cling to an even older ICE as the perfect power train for the future of American transportation.
The anti-diesel sentiment on this site has no realistic basis; it is all fueled by emotional insecurity; not sure why; haven't figured that one out. It seems as though hybrid owners/supporters would support other means of responsibly reducing petroleum, but, evidentially, reducing petroleum consumption in America is not the real reason they drive (or want to drive) a hybrid.
I own both a hybrid and diesel. The mid-size hybrid averages 30 mpg; the compact diesel--44. They both save fuel, but I like the diesel, because I get better hwy mileage and can further reduce petroleum and reduce toxic exhaust through the use of biodiesel blends of fuel. The hybrid can take only E10.

"Minuses...They mention nothing about cost (of the cleaner diesel engine and of diesel fuel), emissions that at best will achieve T2B5"
1. Yes they do mention cost--$27,000, bottom of the line, luxury sedan 5-series.
2. The fuel is not more expensive, only in America where there is a glut of gasoline, because the rest of the world is using less of it and dumping the excess refining capacity on the states, which is keeping the market price of gasoline low in the face of $108+ barrel of light, sweet crude.
3. Emissions-T2B5 is enough. It is the toughest, minimum standards in the world. There are plenty of worse choices out there, i.e. gas guzzlers that meet tier 2, bin 5 but send out extra tons of CO2 and CO in the atmosphere. Besides, the diesel can run on any blend of biodiesel, reducing the levels of all toxic substances, save NOx.
