This car is barely different. It's attractive, but only slightly modernized. I definitely feel that it did not deserve this award.

If it didn´t change much from the previus X5, is because it was already a great design! Got it?

I expect a better qualifier from you, S4. Break it down. The new X5 has a lot of tweaks, none of them huge, but cumulatively very substantial when you already have a platform that is very well done.

The "new mini",i guess a inch here and inch there means you have the best new design in its class???

one of the best looking SUV's on the market, Range Rover Sport is also hot. The Mercedes ML is not bad, but I am not a fan of Porsche Cayenne it does not look special enough, the porsche should look like the new X6

"Bmw X5 wins the “Best new design 2007" award"

Of course the X5 does, wouldn't expect anything less!

Audi R8? Aston Martin V8 Vantage? Cadillac CTS? Mercedes-Benz CL-Class? 335i coupe? S5 coupe? G37 coupe? I feel that there are plenty that also could have won this award.

To Houstoncutie and s4: The article says the award mentioned was for the off-road category. I hardly believe that includes any of the vehicles either of you mentioned.

That X5 is way nice looking. When I first saw pictures of it, I thought "Has that even been redesigned?" but I saw one in real life and, man, it was nice looking. I've also seen a brand new one parked next to an old one and that old X5 looks like a box next to this new one. I like it.

I also like it and definitely prefer it over the next generation, but it's not different enough to merit an award like this. It's not a bad redesign by any stretch- just not ground-breaking. That would be something like the X6.

S4

dont be jealous ;)

IMO its the best looking SUV in the market. The curves and lines make the closest competitor look like a show box. Thats what I love about it. But I do agree the X6 is the best design but its not out yet..

We drove the X5 3.0si last weekend, and it felt a bit underpowered, too heavy. I was very impressed with the 535xi, and we may end up with it, but we will be driving the X5 4.8i just to make sure (-;

I wish the X6 were coming out earlier. It is possibly the perfect car for my wife: sedan-like dynamics, SUV driving position, luxury, some practicality and the fact that it probably won't suck gas like the X5. Oh, well, it's coming out too late. Perhaps I'll get one for myself, because I'm liking it that much.

In any event, we will probably have at least one BMW in our garage in the next year.

This is the best design award for SUV's, not for all types of vehicles, read the article people.

that black cladding looks tacky on a $55k+ vehicle. What's worse is that will be the first thing to go in the refresh, so why bother?

We can already get the M-sport version sans black bumpers in England.

See here:

from the back it looks really different.

Must've been a slow year, j/k, perhaps not.

Ironic the BMW that is basically unchanged from the previous model wins best new design. Maybe because it looks nothing like the other Bangle bungles so they thought it was new.

Ahhh, it's European, it's not supposed to make sense.
