How did the greatest modern V8 not ever win this (RS4), not necessarily disagreeing with the selection, just wondering where the Audi V8 was...

It was just too little too late... While it is a GREAT engine, it is just not as good from a technological POV as the S85 M5 engine was... Then they got "old" and along came a new engine...

it's an impressive engine...a nice wide flat torque band. sounds great too...difficult not to drive it hard. ; )

Wait a minute I thought the 335i's engine was considered low tech because it makes use of turbochargers.

"Toyotaman" get over yourself...What do you call you're reasoning that any list without an engine from Lexus must be biased?

There is nothing groundbreaking about the LS600h's engine, it's just another hybrid with more power, Lexus has already done this with the V8 Hybrid in the GS, the engine technology there is the same as you can find in a Prius. Not saying by any means it’s a poor engine, but that it’s been done before by Toyota/Lexus & therefore isn’t a breakthrough.

335i, 535i...635i perhaps?

this engine is great. they could use it in ANY of their models.

They won't put anything less than a V8 in the six series.

Who awarded the award to that low-tech engine? Is that a joke? ^0^

This award's has to be run by BMW's marketing division, because they won it so many times.

toyota hybrid synergy drive engine won this same award in 2004.

you guys are a joke.

As opposed to those fantasticly hightech and groundbreaking engines in Lexus cars? Ohh, I forgot... They haven't got any! Ooops...

The hybrids are a nice piece of technology... But there is no real innovation in them. They just keep enlarging an old system... The Prius could have won the award ten years ago... But that was then... Today it is just OLD news!

As much as I love BMW's in-line 6 engine because of it is inherently in near-perfect balance, I hope that Audi wins the next award for its awesome 500hp V12 TDI.

This is an engine-specific award. You really gotta toss the LS and IS names aside when you're determining the greatness of an engine. The 4.6L V8 is really not that great of an engine when you look at the numbers. Yes it produces 380hp but that gives it only a 83 hp/L ratio...not the 100 hp/L you get out of the BMW V10, Audi V8 or Porsche V8.

Everyone knows toyota makes great engines, and they win awards up the waz for those engines. BMW won this one for a killer engine using some killer technology, don't get all but hurt about it.

Budfrog,

I don't believe the judges pick the winners on horsepower per liter output alone, there's more to an engine than that. Overall refinement, emissions, fuel eocnomy, response etc.

Toyotaman,

Read this:
http://www.ukintpress.com/engineoftheyear/winners_07/4plus.html

You will see your LS600h engine is ranked third.

They didn't omitted it. It's just not as great an engine.

I'm a bit surprised. I thought Audi's 2.0L turbo would snag the award. But, if there is any engine in the world worthy of this award it's the 3.0L inline twin-turbo out of Munich. Good job BMW!

BMW does it again! Last year it was the impressive V10, this year its the impressive I6. I wanted the V10 to win again, but o well..... 2 years in a row is enough. I cant wait for next year when the BMW V8 in the M3 competes.... time for another win!

Congrats BMW... The 3.0 TT engine is a fantastic piece of engineering! The power just keeps comming at all times! There is no end to it... I think the right engine won! The Audi 2.0 TFSI is a great engine as well, but I think the BMW won because of it's engineering, like the two small turbos which give it a wider flatter torque band...
