Budget car, a top priority for Porsche

We told you this week that Porsche is planning to build cheaper and smaller vehicles.

This fact remained unchanged but today we found out something else: the German manufacturer is now a step closer in producing its own version of the Volkswagen Bluesport Concept unveiled in January at the Detroit Auto Show.

For those who don’t know, the Bluesport is a two-seater, mid-engined roadster, powered by a 2.0-litre diesel engine which promises to make quite a buzz if will be produced. The new model developed by Porsche will be cheaper that the Boxster and according to our sources it represents a top priority for the firm.

Porsche has the highest profitability of all the manufacturers out there. I doubt they are too worried about rushing a cheaper product to the market.

No I did not miss the news, however you obviously missed the common knowledge that per car, Porsche makes a higher profit than any other automaker. My point was that why would Porsche want to dilute their image with a car like this?

Anthony, their image was for one of the best 2-door sports cars on the planet...then they added an SUV....and a sedan.

Look, the 924 was a huge mistake although I realize they also had the 914. IMHO they should concentrate on a new 928.

As for the GM stimulus comment, VW, who just bought Porsche out of insolvency, has a significant state ownership share. Unions sit on the board.

i see nothing wrong with a low end porsche. if it has good build quality and performance, it doesn't break any traditions. i love porsches for the car they build, not the price they command.

if toyota was able to sell an mr2 for under $20k, what makes everyone think that porsche can't build something fun for $35k?

All of the "luxury" brands are going to have to adapt to a world where leasing is not as prevalent, and Americans are saving money, and living within their means.

There will be cheaper Benz, Lexus, BMW, Cadillac, and on and on.

Mid-range vehicles like Buick and Acura may do very well in a more "restrained" market.

Look A Cheap Porsche will probably be $25-35K (Im being Generous, as it probably will be closer to $40K), and for a Porsche, they probably cant make it any cheaper.

Yet again you miss the entire point...by a mile. This is a company that was built around exclusivity, low volume vehicles that people aspire to. When you can now lease a Porsche for under $400/mo. like a 3-series (under $40k)or slot one that could theoretically cost less than a loaded Accord (as you say $25-30k), you no longer aspire or lust to get into a Porsche (heck, a NEW one)you can now simply walk into any dealership.

If everybody could afford a Porsche it would be like owning a Toyota and that would not be as fun. Yes I do work for the UAW/GM but I like other brands of cars as well

Porsche lost its exclusivity years ago when Warehouse managers who hire Americans to work in dirty disease ridden Midwestern Warehouses and pay their employees $8 an hour were able to purchase them.

Star you older Cats are going to have to get over the fact that some brands wont be as exclusive anymore as they used to be (BMW, Benz, Porsche), some brands wont be as cheap anymore (Hyundai, KIA, Chrsyler), and some brands wont be dominant anymore (Toyota, GM)

There was a day when Buick was exclusive. We are both too young to remember that, but things sure do change in the Automotive industry dont they?
