Bugatti Veyron attempts to break speed record
On 29th October Bugatti Veyron will make an attempt to break the speed record. The last best-make stands with 241 mph and was set by a Swedish sports car Koenigsegg in the Italian Nardo.

"241 mph is not enough!", the Castrol company said, who will sponsor the event. Since 1914 more than 20 new speed record have been set, including the present absolute speed record for land vehicles of 1228 km/h, set up from the British Andy Green in the rocket vehicle Thrust SSC.

The supercar of the Volkswagen company is powered by a 8 liter 16-cylinders engine with an output of 1001 hp and during test the Veyron chacked the 248 mph-mark.

That's real nice for Bugatti, but the Lexus LS460 can park it's self in a dark alley and the Lexus IS gets a flashy spiffy chrome paint job that looks like Joe Satriani's old guitars.

Why does EL34 bring up Lexus in every article?

He really reminds me of "logical", in the way he used to bring up Audi in every luxury brand article, regardless of which one it was focused on.

logical is the official benchmark by which website idiots should be measured, and I think EL34 is close, but "nicehomer" easily surpasses him.

VW has improved tremendously over the past few years, no doubt about it.

It is my understanding that Porsche owns 20% of VW, not the otherway around. ie. Ford owns majority share of Mazda, not the opposite.

S4, Porsche is an independant company which shares NO parts for its 997, CGT and 987 series. Only the SUV shares a platform (not engine drivetrain etc.) with VW and is produced alongside the VW factory. Their sport car series are built on their own factories and has been praised by its owners for their outstanding reliability. Ironically the SUV (goto rennteam) has a long history of reliability disasters related to its body and interior. Why is the 997 and its derivatives so reliable? They asked Toyota for big help during the 80's - 90's.

Well, Porsche now owns about 24% of VAG. They will be putting that to good use soon. The Panamera body will be built at a Volkswagen plant. They will also use VW/Audi technology such as DSG and FSI direct injection. Soon, about half of Porsche models will have VW DNA (Cayenne, Panamra, possible 928 like front engined coupe)

CarNutCarNut - 10/27/2006 6:44:50 PM
+1 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
Porche and VW are considered "sister" brands and even now a lot of VW stuff can be found in Porches (mostly materials)

Panamera will be built in former Porche GT factory

S4cabriofoxS4cabriofox - 10/28/2006 2:31:56 PM
+1 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
I know that. But technically, they're part of the VW Group, because they own it.

That's like saying VW isn't part of VW AG because they own it.

And the new Porsche Panamera will supposedly have an Audi sister, and maybe even a VW version.

Dee81Dee81 - 10/27/2006 12:41:05 PM
+1 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
The Panamera and 928 aren't out so unless your the Porsche CEO I would wait. However their racing heritage cars(not soccor mom cars) will never use VW material. This includes the 987 & Cayman, 997, 997 turbo & GT3 (both use GT1 derived engines unlike the 997 M97 engine) and future GT1. They wont be using DSG. They are using PDK. They are different just as how a mercedes slushbox is different from a BMW slushbox. But you are right their next poser/soccor mom cars will share parts. But NOT their race cars.

Of course the 911 won't be VW-ized! That would be horrible!

But you have to admit, the Conti GT, Gallardo/Muciélago, and Veyron (!) are pretty amazing for VW Group-developed cars. So, even if the 911 did become enveloped in the VW Group, they'd have experience.

I just hope it doesn't.

BTW the 997 and 987 manual transmissions are built by Aisin which is 23% owned by Toyota. So does Toyota "own" Porsche? Of course not only a fanboy would say such things.

I haerd the sam thing about the "Ring" times. Given the fact that the car weighs over 4,000 pounds, even 1,001 HP can' make the porky car into a track star. And remember before the aero was sorted out, that crazy spin a pre-production car did on the track, and then the announcement production would be suspended until the aero was sorted out. Magazines have said you can feel the heft of the car, and that it is the world's fastest GT, not a race car fo the streets. Its like taking a Olympic Weightlifter and putting him in the 400 meters..great start, but once you hit the corners...

I have to say that the bugatti veyron do not have 1001 hp. In reality, it has ''only'' 987 hp. They failed to build a 1000 hp car, so they decided to play with measuring unit. The fact is. James Watt invented the hp in 1784, but in France, they had their own measuring unit called the ''cheval vapeur'' which equals to 0.98633hp. People don't know that so it is easy to increase the real power of a car. Next time, dont get fooled!

By the way, I doubt it will beat the Koenigsegg.

Well you are misinformed then,
considering that V.A.G. themselves said that every Veyron makes around 1050HP in normal conditions. So no matter which measurment you take, it will have more then 1000hp.
And i have very little doubt that it will beat the Koenigsegg, considering it has run 407km/h many times before and that it is even electronicly limited to that speed.

speaking of Horsepower. It has been said by Mclaren engineers that they could get 900-1000 HP , up to 10,000 rpms from the Mclaren F1 V12 engine. Any truth to this? I read it on a website while trying to find info on the one M8 prototype that BMW built.
