CNET CAR TECH AWARDS 2006
cnet.com- "At CNET Car Tech, we look at cars a little differently than a typical car publication. Instead of asking, "How quickly can it go from 0 to 60?" we ask, "Where can I plug in my MP3 player?" and "Will my cell phone work with this car?" Over the last year we've reviewed the tech credentials of more than 80 cars. Now it's time to see which automaker is best in tune with tech-savvy buyers with our 2006 Car Tech Awards. This year, we have four categories: Best Navigation System, Best Audio System, Best Communicator, and the overall Tech Car of the Year. Here are the winners."
2006 Tech Car of the Year: Lexus LS460L
Winner - Best Navigation System: Acura RDX
Winner - Best Audio System: Lincoln Zephyr (surprise!)
Winner - Best Communicator: BMW 335i

I guess the biggest surprise here is the Zephyr, too bad it is out of production already (The MKZ should have the same system right). So best audio system is the THX in the Lincoln followed by ELS, ML, HK, and Dynaudio.

Yeah that too, they put the IS 350 there and not the LS 460's 19 speaker system.

I am a former pro musician, recording and sound
engineer and I never listen to music in the car.
I mostly listen to AM talk radio ;)

A second-hand Korean stereo system, Bobby Brown Greatest Hits CD and outdated ponytail DO NOT make you a professional musician. Also, the beer gut, idiocy and SoCal trailer residence DO NOT make you a real estate agent.

Lexus is running yet another TV ad to show how wonderful park assist is and I think it's the dumbest thing ever.
A person that can't park a car has no business driving.

Yeah but it is still good if they buy the car. Plus there are tons of people who can't park - you've seen them.

I've seen drivers that will do 30 transmission shifts to try and get a car into a space that the car won't fit and I've seen big rig drivers back a rig into a space not much wider than the rig.
With the Lexus you have to determine if the space is big enough and then push buttons, step on the break and don't touch the steering wheel or else the system shuts down In that amount of time I would be parked and walking to where I was going.
I think sensors and cameras are good to tell how far from the curb and cars, but allow me to turn the wheel.

As quirky as some may think he is, Brian Cooley really does a good job of getting people to look at what each car offers and what they don't. He lets the other magazine and media outlets worry about the 0-60 times and under-the-hood pieces and gives us in depth reviews of what we can and can't do while we are hitting those quarter mile runs.
Plus he hates in car NAV systems as much as I do.

Gogo....exactly what do you think is the main focus of CNET??? I guess you don't all sweaty when some new art gallery opens or some comic book convention is in town???
Try getting your head out of your art books and realize how stupid you sound when you don't know what your talking about.
And, don't go knock on something without seeing for yourself what they are talking about. If you need to have the words "FOR MORONS: CLICK HERE TO READ THE ARTICLE", then maybe we need to make the neon signs a bit brighter.
Maybe that should be a requirement now on AS before commenting, you should read the damn article before commenting.
"This clouds judgment".......so does sniffing paint.
Damn I hate idiots.

Because I fluxuate so much, I seem to like the LS now.
Now that future prospects of getting an $85K sedan (A8) seem bleak, although I wouldn't like it as much, I might tell my wife to drive the LS next year- we could get a very well-equipped model for $75K, her trade-in would be $25K for the RX, and everyone would be happy. I know she'd like the car.
There's only three obstacles:
1. It's a Lexus. She's had two Lexuses and is sick of seeing them everywhere. She's stated quite a few times that she'd refuse to look at one.
2. It's RWD. I live in the metropolitan area of Chicago, and although my wife is a safe driver, she lacks the skill that I posses. I'm scared that she'd get herself into trouble in the winter with a RWD car, snow tires or not.
3. The Jaguar XJ8. She's still in love with how this car looks, and I can't blame her. But the LS would suit her better- more reliable, more advanced (she needs a backup camera, among other things), more luxurious. What's attractive to me about the XJ8 is that it's fun to drive, which I know by having driven one, and that it's an alarmingly good value for the money. $70K out the door for a loaded XJ8. However, I haven't driven the LS- I'm sure it's not as sporty, but adequate, and you get a lot more power and features for $75K than you would in a $70K XJ. I'd say it's an even better value.

I just built an LS460 SWB online.
I optioned it in Verdigris Mica, over "Cashmere" with walnut trim. The option package I got included such niceties as heated rear seats (heated fronts are standard), ML 19-speaker, navi w/ backup cam, cooled front seats in addition to the heaters, power rear sunshade, and park assist. $69,772.
It will be considered!

BTW, Lexus's "Park Assist" is NOT the same as the electronic parallel park system. It's just the sensors on the bumpers. I don't approve of the full system, and don't see any point to spending the extra $3K on it.

Considered may be as far as it may go... sorry, Lexus fans.
She told me tonight, in fact, that she'd want to look into an '07 S550 4Matic next year- used, only because I'm not spending $100K on her car in addition to a new home.
