While I've had a chance to experience the Mercedes-AMG GT S, we've been waiting for the delayed introduction of the standard GT model. That's because this is the more affordable version that has less whiz bang technology in it.
So, what do you get with the standard AMG GT?
Instead of the hyped up engine in the GT S, you get a 4.0-liter V8 biturbo that's good for 456 horsepower and 443 lb.-ft. of torque mated to a dual-clutch transmission. Zero to 60 happens in a scant 3.9 seconds but there's a catch: There is no RACE mode. Also missing is the adaptive exhaust.
Rather than have the full Nappa leather seats as seen in the GT S variant, instead buyers will get leatherette with Alcantara inserts. Considering how aggressive the bolstering is, this might actually be the smarter purchase due to the likely wear an owner will encounter.
If you're looking to save $20,000 though, we think it sounds like a pretty compelling package. The 2017 Mercedes-AMG GT will start at $111,200* and go on sale late this summer.
*This pricing does NOT include title, taxes and fees.
That said, does this packaging sound compelling when compared with the likes of the Porsche 911 Turbo and Audi R8? We're still awaiting word as to whether of not the four rings will bring about another powerplant for the R8 to complement the V10 variant.
