Cadillac Considers A Turbo Diesel CTS - But Would You Buy It?

Whispers out of GM suggest the company is actively considering fitting its smooth, innovative new 4.5L Duramax V-8 turbodiesel into the engine bay of the Cadillac CTS. Fitting the engine is relatively straightforward, say sources, as long as Cadillac uses the raised hood from the CTS-v.

While it was initially expected the engine would serve in SUVs and light-duty pickups, GM engineers have long pointed out that the dual overhead cam, four-valve diesel V-8 will fit in the same space as a small-block gasoline V-8. They say the Duramax has been specifically designed for "a wide variety of vehicle applications." That obviously includes passenger cars.

GM says the 4.5L Duramax, which features aluminum cylinder heads with integrated manifolding and a variable-vane turbocharger mounted in the vee, is capable of delivering more than 310 hp and in excess of 520 lb-ft of torque. It also claims the engine meets the tough 2010 emissions standards, making it legal in all 50 states.

I wouldn't buy a gasoline CTS, so there would be no reason for me to buy the diesel variant.

The CTS is a great car and shows GM is still capable of putting out a solid product. However, I've always been turned off by its styling.

I'd buy one only if it came with a stylish 'DIESEL' hood ornament like my dad's 1979 Olds Custom Cruiser (that is before the engine blew up and the dealer put in a 5.7 L Chevy gas V8 engine).

:-)

BTW - in a fit of nostalgia, I just bought a 'DIESEL' hood ornament on EBAY.

Go buy one yourself and we can corner the market for these item for when Car & Driver magazine wants to obtain one for their inevitable photo shoot of the first GM car in 25 years to have a diesel engine.

I believe Caddy have proven it's place in the market and for those who have to go with the crowd, then this car has no appeal anyway. This new model is getting the euro companies concerned because Caddys sales in the exec arena is up. It will not cannibalize the market over night but there is an obvious move for those in the market to look at the CTS in comparison. Living on the west coast, I see a lot of CTS driven by younger affluent types looking not for the "me too" 3 Series. The CTS is edgier, different and sharp without the restraint euro model inherently have by design.  A diesel would be great and a plus for imports to Europe.

A) The 4.5L diesel is NOT a duramax engine. The Duramax is a 6.6L pushrod workhorse.

B) The CTS is already slated to get a 2.9L VM-Motori (GM) engine that produces 250hp and 406lb-ft (550Nm) of torque.

C) I would bet no the 2.9L V6 diesel in the USA before the 4.5L diesel going into the CTS.

Makes more sense if you ask me, 550Nm is a ton of muscle..... you really don't need 700+Nm in a CTS. Especially since it makes everything more costly and complicated. Let us not forget the great evil.....fuel economy.

The 2.9L with GM's 6L80 transmission (to handle all that torque) and you'd have a TON of thrilled drivers out there. A Gorgeous Cadillac with an amazing array of features, a powerful diesel engine, and great fuel economy.

SOLD

Wow. I would have expected a V6 TD option but a big truck derived V8?

That aside, I think it would sell if the dollar vs. efficiency argument was strong enough. One only need look at the Mercedes Benz lot to see how diesel luxury cars are selling. (There aren't any just sitting around).

Who in the right mind would buy a GM, Ford or a Chrysler anyways. The day you bought the car off the lot and an hour later the dealership could be closed down. Also I think Cadillac is trying to make a trend so it can be labeled as economical with the American diesel not make an achievement out of it like what Europe is doing.

just like who in there right mind would by a veyron today?

i've been wondering when GM would offer a diesel in the CTS. The 2.9 sounds like it would be the smarter choice of diesel over the 4.5 since there isn't a gas V8 offered in the CTS that I'm aware of. I would say this could potentially be another one of GMs cars that could go over 30 mpg, plus this one would have great performance too.

I think they should build a gasoline turbo CTS the current car needs more force to be competitive 0-60 and besides as well as the Cobalt SS did that recent test against much more powerful cars I think a turbo CTS would help alot as a car to sit in between the 500+hp CTSV and the 300hp normal cts as thats a huge gap in speed and power.

This proposed diesel CTS is a great idea. Keep up the good work, GM!

I almost bought a Cadillac CTS myself. It was cheaper than the Audi A4 and BMW 335i, with comparable performance, yet it ran on regular gas. I liked the exterior styling (poor color choices, though). The interior was very stylish and comfortable - EXCEPT FOR TWO PROBLEMS THAT MADE ME DECIDE ON AN AUDI A4 OR S4 INSTEAD!

Problem #1 - I couldn't get a CTS equipped the way I wanted unless I got a package that included the panoramic sunroof. Unfortunately, the sunroof diminishes the headroom by almost 2 inches. My head barely cleared the ceiling - I couldn't fit my flattened palm in between my head and the ceiling. I could still have gotten the car, however, but there was still another problem:

Problem #2 - The headrests wouldn't extend high up enough to reach my head. Even fully extended, the headrest was jabbing me in the neck between my shoulders, and it couldn't be adjusted so that it wouldn't be sticking out from the plane of the rest of the seatback. I couldn't get the headrest into a tolerable position.

Granted, I'm an unusual size (6'4" tall, long-waisted, like Michael Phelps). Still, I had no problem with the headrests in the BMW 335i and the Audi A4. It is a shame that I couldn't buy the Caddy because of these two silly problems. I really wanted to buy American this time.

I hope this is a commitment to fuel-economy and the improved diesel characteristics rather than just a marketing strategy to capture the supposedly 'temporary' green movement. GM has the technology know-how and research capability to master diesel/hybrid/electric alternatives and it would be a shame if the finance/marketing guys dictate the long-term product development (and I'm a finance guy myself). Regardless of their intent, I think GM's action on this front is good for the car industry (and America's car industry in particular) but it'll be tough to catch up to the Europeans. And for them to start their catch up effort on the CTS platform is a good start (I'm still not impressed with the CTS exterior design though but then that's just a matter of personal taste).

GM FINALLY puts a decent diesel engine in a passenger car meant for the northamerican market? It will be a niche product. A halo car for retired farmers. Is it for towing 15000lb trailers?

A 20lb sledge hammer is still a 20lb sledge no matter how much chrome plate, fancy aluminum handle with titanium fasteners and plastic you can engineer into it. That thing will have the most killer 5th wheel towing package ever. Goodyear will have to make special mini dually tires for that application.

Does GM have a euro passenger car diesel for this application? There is no technology transfering from this application to the mass market models. not even a green halo.

Pointless. No European maker offers a diesel this size in a car this size. Only the E420 cdi comes close, and that is still a niche model. And didn't they already says there will be a 2.9 for Europe?
