The Cadillac CTS has always been one of those cars that gives us a lot of trouble when comparing it to its rivals.

Many think that the CTS is a 3-Series (or C-Class) rival, while others look at it as a true competitor to the 5-Series (or E-Class). However, when General Motors emerges from bankruptcy Cadillac’s future sedan lineup will look a little more conventional than it does now.

According to CARandDRIVER, Cadillac will finally bring to the market a much-rumored appropriately sized 3-Series rival. That will eventually give the CTS some space to truly compete with the 5-Series. The STS and DTS sedan have been long-rumored to be replaced by one single model. According to sources, that sedan will be known as the XTS and will compete with the likes of the Lexus ES.

Consider M5 is never BMW's best work. and its gonna be out of production pretty much next year. its not hard to imagine that Cadillac could do something better than it.

But for 3 series, which has always been the best of what BMW can do, and many other manufactures all tried to beat it but not yet really succeed. on the other hand, when Caddy brings this car to the market, the new 3 series will probably be out as well, so it would be even harder to beat the brand new model.
However, since the CTS-V is a big success, the new car would be at least close to 3 series.

Cadillac needs a 3 series fighter but keep the price low. The CTS cost the same as a 3 series right now. So a Cadillac 3 series should come in at a great value.

Has Cadillac given up on trying to compete with luxury cars like the Lexus LS? Easier to compete with a sporty compact sedan like a 3 series or Civic Si Coupe I guess.

Cadillac never did compete in that segment. They've never had an S class/7 series/LS/A8 fighter. Hope it's in the works though.

So will it be a 3 series competitor or ES competitor? Im confused. I guess if it is the size of the 3 series, it will be a 3 series competitor. The CTS should compete with the ES although it is to sporty to do so. The XTS would be a good sports sedan to go hand and hand with the 3. And the STS if it sticks around can go up against the 5 series and GS.

If Caddy takes the best of the CTS they have an excellent chance of competing with the 3-series as long as the price is cheaper.

However, the existing CTS is far short of honestly competing with a 5-series.

Stop building cars that look like other cars. I would like to see some manufacture identity. Its gets boring when a manufacture designs a new vehicle that has very similar designs from another current vehicle that happens to be popular. There was a time when you could tell a brand from a distance, now they all look alike. Yawn

theres no trouble on comparing the caddy, is easy, here are the FACTS
CTS is an entry level luxury SPORTS sedan...aka G35,3,C,A4,IS,TL,etc...FACT

ES is an entry level luxury sedan...FACT

they dont compete,
so what its the size of an 5-series, the Genesis is the size of 7er?????

The writer of that article must have his alpha-numerics mixed up. Why would the car marked to replace both the STS and the DTS compete with the likes of the Lexus ES?!? They surely mean Lexus LS. That makes more sense. Who wants to compete with the ES anyway?

Caddy can do it. The CTS-V whooped the M5 in most comparisons so they know what they're doing. Just keep the weight down and they should be able to do it.
