nissan, California, EV, leaf, teslaCalifornia has topped a milestone 100,000 plug-in cars sold since they were introduced there in 2010, the California Plug-In Electric Vehicle Collaborative announced Tuesday.

The group said that California residents buy about 40 percent of the plug-in electric vehicles sold in the U.S., or 102,440 between December 2010 and August 2014.

"California's plug-in electric vehicle market is ramping up, and we expect to see significant growth over the next ten years as customers realize how economical and convenient they are," the group's Executive Director, Christine Kehoe, said in a statement.
