Can BMW hold onto the International Engine of the Year Award??
The results of the ninth International Engine of the Year Awards will be announced on 9 May 2007 at Engine Expo in Stuttgart, Germany – and last year’s champion, BMW, is hoping that its current crop of engines can fend off stiff competition from a number of bold new powerplants.

After dominating last year’s Awards, with the M5 V10 heart collecting the overall International Engine of the Year title for a second consecutive year, BMW will go head-to-head with the likes of Volkswagen’s 1.4-litre TSI that utilises both turbocharging and supercharging, Porsche’s 3.6-litre twin turbo powerhouse and Toyota’s economical, but extremely sprightly, 1-litre three-cylinder, which is said to be the lightest internal combustion engine on sale today.

Other contenders to the title this year include BMW’s 3-litre twin turbo-effort, which boasts technology in the shape of two variable turbochargers, direct injection and an all-aluminium crankcase. Also competing is VW/Audi’s 2-litre FSI Turbo engine that powers numerous models across the VW Group family.

The results of the International Engine of the Year Awards 2007 will be decided by a panel of 62 renowned automotive journalists from 30 countries, all of whom have extensive knowledge and experience of today’s modern car engines.

The VQ? not even in a dream! you need an engine that's technologically ahead, not on that sells numbers, although reliability does matter, ...
I don't know if it's in the competition this year, but I'd bet money on the 3.999 cc V8 in the M3
and let's not forget the 3.0sd from BMW too, after all it has 286 bhp and 428 lb-ft of torque!

Read the list again.

"...Porsche’s 3.6-litre twin turbo powerhouse..."

That's the 911 Turbo's flat six.

It might not be the top engine, but the 2.0T has been high on the list before, and it will be again.

I wouldn't be surprised if the 911 Turbo's engine won. Unbelievable power out of that engine. I know you could get more, but the fact that an automaker was brave enough to squeeze that much power out of a stock 3.6L- most would shy away after 400 or so. Porsche even DECREASED the displacement from the Carrera S!

My prediction's the Audi’s 2-litre FSI Turbo engine will win the award followed by a very close BMW
3-litre twin turbo.

The Alpina B7 (BMW) has the best V8 engine on the market. The 4.4-liter 500-hp, 516 lb-ft of torque and 0-60 in 4.6 seconds is unmatched.

Direct injection is key. I believe that this technology will be turning points for manufacturers from now on. The fact that some makes aren't incorporating this into new engines is baffling(cost aside). I've said it once and I'll say it again HPDi is a name you will be hearing much more of. Yet, I'm torn... That 4.0L V8 for the E92 M3 is also amazing. M GmbH and BMW/ Sauber F1 did their homework!

So I assume BMW could not submit their new 420 HP V8 in time?

And why wouldn't the V10 win again? While I do like the new 3 liter in the 335, it's still not as cutting edge as the V10, even though it's more practical.
