Can The 2009 CTS-V Steal Everyone's Thunder With 12.0 Second Quarter Mile Performance?

We knew 2009 Cadillac CTS-V was going to be something special, but would it make the competition stand up and notice? After all with 556 ponies on tap how could it really not be a performer, right?  But when I looked at the performance figures that just crossed my desk today, it is clear these aren't your garden variety ponies, more like these are akin to race bred thoroughbred equines.

Cadillac is actually claiming the CTS-V sedan will now go from 0-to-60mph in just 3.9 seconds and fly through the quarter mile in 12 seconds flat!   The top speed is estimated at an impressive 191 mph to boot!

That my friends is hard core performance. Enough so, that everyone will stand up and take notice.

When I read this earlier this morning I was so surprised that I inhaled most of my Earl Grey and had to spend the next 10 minutes coughing it out of my lungs.

The CTS was born on the Nurburgring. If that dosen't give you a handling pedigree...well then nothing will.

Ahahahahahahahahahahaha!!! 556 horse power!? Germany, Japan... Back to the drawing board! Damn! That is just crazy! You wouldn't want to pull up next to one of these in that fancy M3 or the dressed up IS-F. That would just be thoroughly embarrassing when you rev it to 8000 and you still get properly WHOOPED!

I have to say that though an M3 or and RS4 might (i'd like to emphasize might) beat this on the track, they won't stand a chance where these cars will spend 90% (more like 99% probably), on normal roads! It might be a bit excessive, but I LOVE IT! And I especially love the way Cadillac is doing this while everybody are screaming "Global warming" and "Oil shortage". They obviously thought "Ahh screw political correctness, we all know this is what men wants!" And it IS! Who wouldn't want a 556 horsepower powerhouse? As long as you can afford the fuel :D

Poor you! Is it possible to fill up those huge scoops with body filler? And can you see anything over that huge bonnet?! And isn't it just a bit stupid to buy a car with 420 hp when you can have one with 550 for almost the same?!

The IS-F is just the most stupid car ever made! And telling me that you have one is even more stupid as I loath IS-F owners! That would be like buying a BMW which moves like a Mercedes!

With all this high-power Detroit metal coming out right in the middle of high gas prices seems vaguely reminiscent of the 1970's. I remember my old man selling off his muscle car and buying (gulp!) a Honda Civic. Sad day.

For the folks who have the money, owning a big powerful car or truck will not be a big deal. Too bad for people only making minimum wage or non-college grads, your days of owning and operating a vehicle in the US are coming to an end. The IS-F and C63 don't play with the CTS-V, the CTS-V goes strictly at the M5 and E Amg's...so, there should be no mention of the M3, IS-F, RS4, or C63, none, what so ever.

As far as I know the CTS is an entry level sedan. There are the STS and DTS model ranges.

The STS is the size of a BMW 7 Series and is generally uncompetitive. The CTS stretches over two classes. The only real competition for this car, performance-wise and size-wise, will be the RS6 sedan if that comes out.

S4 i completely disagree and that is not often. The M3 is a competitor to this car ... Dont forget that the M5 either

M3 0 to 60 4.1 and 1/4 mile 12.6 with manual and not dual clutch which will make the car faster

M5 0 to 60 4.1 and 1/4 mile 12.24

lets wait and see what the actual numbers prove out to be before judging this car and what the estimated figures are. Last time alot of people did that with the IS-F and look what happened when that car actually faced off against the M3, C63.

The CTS-V is for sure an interesting vehicle. But he has a point here, Cadillac claimed lots for the old CTS-V, but I don't remember a single magazine actually achieving those prvevious claims.

s4cabrio,

no, what's wrong with you? The only thing I said is that I will wait to hear from another source(than the manufacturer) that those numbers are real. I don't see a problem with that. I already said the car is nice but I cannot say is the second coming just based on numbers released by Cadillac. Ultimately, even if the numbers match there is a lot more to a car than numbers. The old CTS-V had really good numbers too but it was not even close in overall driving experience to the M3 or RS4. Numbers are not everything and I expected you to know better. This feels almost like deja vu if I remember correctly what happened at the release of the old CTS-V. People were saying exactly the same things.
Well, they were proved wrong. Is just not enough to make a faster car. In order to succeed you need to make a BETTER car.
Again this Cadillac is a monster and it sure impresses with the performance stats but I really, really doubt that is going to be a better car than a C63 AMG or M3. Faster doesn't equal better and I personally take the better car over the faster car any day.

"When the first Cadillac CTS-V arrived as a 2004 model with an LS6 Corvette Z06 V8, Cadillac claimed the car could accelerate to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds. Theoretically, this might have been possible, but we (like every other publication we know of) were unable to get the car to 60 mph in under 5 seconds. The car had such violent wheel hop at launch that the exhaust pipes thwacked the bodywork and any driver with a shred of mechanical sympathy would back out of the throttle for fear of leaving a smoking pile of rear-end parts at the starting line.

As we recall, Cadillac wailed about insufficient driving skills on the part of media testers and questioned testing methods when reports of wheel hop and slower-than-advertised acceleration runs came out five years ago. Now, Mikels says casually, "I don't know how you couldn't get wheel hop from the old car." Thanks."

Gentlemen , I prefer german cars, but I belive in numbers and those numbers told me that the performance of the CTS V is the best, not only runs faster if not also turns better than ANY germans rivals. Better than any AMG, RS or M car. 7:59. Still, I prefer the C63 and a lot of people will prefer the M3 or M5 or RS4 or RS6 over it, and in that case I am talking about emotions. Congratulations Cadillac, you are in the right path.

No matter what Detroit puts out you guys will find some kind of way to bash it, The CTS-V is a fine auto and yes it burns a lot of gas but it burns up a lot of miles and rubber also. and this car is world class to say the less in terms of quality, what other super sedan has a 100,000 mile warranty?

Not trying to bash, but I didn't see where this car will have the 100K warranty. Automakers usually don't put those types of warranties on their high-performance models. But if the CTS-V does have that warranty, all the better. The car's numbers look extremely potent. What will the Germans do to top it? Can they run with it in the same price range?

How did you reach that conclusion? Just from reading the Cadillac press release? Did you drive both the M5 and the CTS-V and concluded that the Cadillac is better?.......I thought so.
So you just rant about things you don't know anything about like most of the imbeciles that think that having Internet access makes you a specialist in any domain.
What kind of idiot would believe that overnight Cadillac just became a better car maker than BMW and Mercedes. All we KNOW is that this car has a lot of horsepower. None of us drove it and based on the history of this model nobody should expect miracles. CTS-V had more horsepower than BMW and Mercedes before and still lost all the comparisons.
I'm not saying that this Cadillac is not a good car because it would be wrong, but some people here make claims(based on zero time at the wheel of either cars) that are borderline retarded.

Htay7500Htay7500 - 6/10/2008 4:36:31 PM

actually, it would be crazy for anybody to not give the CTS a 1st look. if you don't know what I mean by better, I mean exterior, interior wise. and I took a drive on a cts. AND it doesn't need that sequential shift w/e its called which doesn't make the car any fun. and yes the cts v lost because of its interior materials. its performance is from the corvettes engine. no one said cadillac, as a whole was a better car maker than BMW or mercedes. I just said it was better because its interior and exterior stands out and with the raw power it makes, it definetly has potential.

whats wrong with its pushrod engines? does it matter if its high-tech? that makes things complicated. they make about as much power as BMWs V10. they're lighter and compact and can makes wads of power. unlike BMW having a supercar, chevy has one in its corvette which gives it better fuel economy.

Yeah, Star...those supercar Bentley's are crap because they use pushrod engines, too, I guess.

Funny how when it's a Bentley, it is called heritage, and when it is GM, it is called crap.

You guys are just irritated that you have to pay so much for all that "technology" just to get you butts handed to you by "old tech" pushrods.

Seriously, at a car show, who walks up to a car and says, "WOW! Look at the technology in that engine!"?

Who reads a car magazine and looks for the technology in the engine before looking at the 0-60 and 1/4 miles times/mph?

If you want to pay for it, great, knock yourself out...but you can't deny the "old tech" works fine in everything from Camaros to Corvettes to Cadillacs to Bentley's.

I can just hear it now, when I beat all those M3's and M5's in my '04 CTS-V.

Passenger; "Wow, that Cadillac just beat you!"

Driver; "Yeah, but he's got an old pushrod in there."

Passenger; "Oh, well, that's cool then...good job losing to an old engine."

lol

I think that would be the dialog between a boy racer douche-bag and his douche-bag passenger. People who buy supercars don't have anything to prove. Like I said faster doesn't equal better. Enthusiasts buy cars engineered to be the BEST drivers not the fastest. We are not all boy racers.

09CTSVforMe09CTSVforMe - 6/11/2008 3:18:27 PM
0 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
My point was is that that would not be the conversation anyone would have.

Nice job, now you'll have all the BMW M drivers ticked at you for pigeonholing them as "boy racers."

If you statement re: enthusiasts were true, we'd all be driving Lotuses (Loti? : ). If fast isn't a significant part of enthusiast purchases, then why are we even debating whether a 556hp car is better than a 500hp car?

Don't kid yourself, the CTS-V is more than just fast. Drive one, you would probably like it!

StarStar - 6/11/2008 6:39:50 PM
0 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
Of course fast is always part of the equation in this segment but we should agree that there is more to a car than just going fast. The BMW M3 is slower than the C63 AMG but is still the car that offers the most thrilling driving experience. Numbers are not everything and you probably know that.
I'm not here to criticise Cadillac since I am actually a fan of the brand but I cannot make an absurd claim like "the new CTV-S is better than the M3 and C63 AMG" just based on the numbers released by Cadillac, like ignorant people do. Do you understand what I mean?

I never said that is imposible for the new CTS-V to beat BMW and Mercedes, I only said that based on the history of this specific model I have doubts that they could beat the Germans and that I reserve my FINAL verdict... after I test drive the Cadillac.
Sincerely, I hope the Cadillac is better. It would be insane for a car enthusiast to not wish that somebody would make even a better car than the M or AMG divisions.

It lost comparos due to perception of the interior materials, not the performance. The 1st gen V outperformed all sport sedans when it came out, and I'll put my $$$ up against anyone betting against a repeat performance. You can see the aesthetic improvements in the regular CTS and the shows cars (V and Coupe), so I can't wait for the new round of comparos.

I'll take mine with 2 doors, TYVM.

Agent63, Caddy had stated that the E39 M5 was the target for the original CTS-V. SO if that was the target before, then it is clearly stated that they are a 5 series competitor. The CTS is Caddy's enrty level sedan here in the states, because they don't have a smaller car, so they use it as as 2 and 5 series, until they come out with a 3 series competitor
