Can You Guess Which Carmaker Is The Cleanest?
So which carmaker is the world's cleanest? Not sure? Well, an independent survey released last week has found that BMW has most improved its average fuel efficiency and CO2 emission rate. Indeed, it's done so to an extent which will embarrass other carmakers.

The study, began from 1990-2005 by Environmental Defense, a US-based non-profit environmental advocacy group, which shows BMW has improved fuel economy by 14 per cent and carbon emissions by 12.3 per cent.

The next best reduction was Toyota's 3 per cent. The C02 performance of every other leading carmaker deteriorated.

BMW is the leader in this technology ... Also, BMW's Paint Plant is the " Most Green Plant " in the world. BMW has won 2006 and 2007 award by the EPA. First car manufacturer to win back to back awards by the EPA ever ...

This article seems to be a bit of a play on words here. All they're taking into account is the fuel economy increase and emission reduction versus the total number of cars on the road. This hardly proves that BMW is better than any other manufacturer.

For those that dont know ... BMW has some of the most innvoative Production Facilities in the world. They are the most Green. Hybrids dont have anything on BMW and the Paint Facility in Spartenburg, SC... Did you know? BMW to Operate World’s First Green Paint Shop

BMW to Operate World’s First Green Paint Shop

SPARTANBURG, S.C.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–May 5, 2006–BMW Manufacturing Co. announced today that it will use recycled methane gas generated by the Palmetto Landfill near Spartanburg to provide energy to its paint shop.

BMW is working with long-standing partner Durr Systems of Plymouth, Mich., to modify and upgrade equipment so landfill gas can be used to fuel the paint shop. Durr Systems specializes in developing and implementing energy performance projects in industrial facilities and is a partner in the Environmental Protections Agency’s (EPA) Landfill Methane Outreach Program, which helps businesses lower operating cots, protect the environment and build a sustainable future.

“BMW is the first automotive paint shop to integrate the use of landfill gas in its process equipment,” said Dave Ciuffoletti, Durr’s vice president of sales. “BMW should be congratulated for its environmental stewardship. By taking advantage of a renewable resource, BMW has truly become the world’s first green paint shop.”

BMW Manufacturing gained international recognition on June 20, 2002, when the automotive manufacturer first announced that a 9.5-mile pipeline has been constructed from the landfill to its facility to provide some of the plant’s energy needs. With today’s announcement, about half of BMW Manufacturing’s energy is now provided by this renewable resource, saving the company at least $1 million per year in energy costs.

By utilizing previously unused energy from landfill gas, BMW Manufacturing is reducing area emissions of carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, by approximately 17,000 tons and is recovering enough energy to heat 10,000 homes per year. The quantity of greenhouse gases reduced is the equivalent of driving a car around the globe 4,300 times, or more than 100 million miles.

Sorry Klinger, but Bmw8ter is right.

It is not about knowing "better" than the Environmental Defense, it is about "understanding" what the Environmental Defense is saying.

The article states that BMW had the biggest increase in fuel economy and decrease in emmissions. No where does the article state that BMW has the LOWEST emmissions, or the BEST fuel economy. They are merely the most IMPROVED over last year. I sincerely question whether they are the cleanest. Take off the rose colored glasses.

Clearly, kudos go out to BMW for being on the right track. This is no small feat.

I never for one second believed that they were the cleanest manufacturer, common sense would dictate otherwise, given the amount of high powered cars BMW makes. The article is missleading in that point of view. Still, as you say, a 12% increase is no small feat.

Lexus is the cleanest carmaker because of their low toxic emission engines and hybrids. BMWs are dirty especially considering they have slow and underpowered diesels that also pollute with high noise levels.

Slow diesels???? they have diesels faster than your gs350, and es350 and much better fuel economy. I only wish they would bring more diesels, because the only choices we have are volkswagen, which are fuel efficient, but not much for performance and the new Mercedes which is great.

and thosie diesels are so quiet you have to really listen to tell. you must be trapped in the 80's with the loud slow american diesels. Hell even the Chevrolet truck with the duramax diesel is very quiet. Why are you such a hater David? if it isn't lexus it is garbage 3rd world engineering in your eyes. You really need to grow up and get a clue. I hope you aren't as narrow in other aspects of life becaue if you are you have one lame one-sided life ahead of you, never enjoying the variety kife has to offer. I have said many times I like them all, but my favorite is BMW, but that doesn't mean BMW is the best and no other is worthy. Each car appeals to a different audience otherwise all cars would have the sporty feel of BMW, Performance of a ferarri enzo, driveability and ease of operation of a compact, room of an SUV, economy and cleanliness of an electric vehicle, reliability of lexus, Mercedes innovation, comfort of a maybach, safety of a volvo, ETC. Lexus has it's downfalls just like BMW and everyone else, however ones downfall may be the reason someone else likes it. Take for example a lincoln town car. to us enthusiasts it is a sloppy driving, cheap barge, but those very same negative attributes like the floaty ride, living room sofa seats and bargain price to us may be the reason someone else likes it. wake up and be a real enthusiast. a real enthusiast isn't predjudice to a badge, but appreciates all aspects and purposes of cars. All cars fill some void. I don't like most domestic cars, however I do give them credit and respect for the things that they do do well and for what they are.

Well,

I hate to be this way, but being the most improved does not make you the "cleanest". The "cleanest" would be the manufacturer that emits the lowest absolute amount -whichever that may be.

If autospies.com had a 95% reduction in fanboy posts next year, it would still have more fanboy postings than most other car websites.

When talking about improvements, it all depends on your starting point.

Any High performance car is a dirty car. In that case the award goes to Mercedes Benz in first place, BMW in second, and Audi in third place. So is very easy to understand why they are focus on to improve their engines to attain the lowest emision posible. Any high performance manufacturer will have that kind of problem.

not necessarily, look at that high performance electric car that has a good range. I forget the range but the performnance numbers are nothing to laugh at. I think 0-60 in the upper 4 second range. I forget the name of the car, but I saw it not too long ago on here.

cleanest or not, BMW still is the leader in innovation.

this article is just saying that they are the biggest gainers, because their technology allows them to gain fuel consumption distance, along with reducing emissions.

This means that they are the best improving emission standards, where as others are deteriorating.

I'd rather see their cars get lighter and retain their current power figures, because that's more of a BMW-style philosophy.

+1 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
True, so far the weight saving technology has largely been used to maintain the 50:50 weight balance. But they are innovating, especially in engine development. The N52 is one of the lightest engines of it size class in the world: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_N52

Also the S65 in the new M3 is lighter than the S54 inline 6 from the previous M3; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_S65

Further applications of technologies like hydro foaming will reduce weight further.

Congrats to BMW to being the cleanest Automaker. Im impressed and amazed.

My guess before entering this article was Honda. I was shocked to see its Co2 rise.

Well done BMW.

My guess was Honda as well!!!

I thought Toyota initially - then thought 'No,' it can't be cause they have Landcruisers and 4runners all over the show - surely those cancel any Prius benefits!!!

Honda could probably be the most fuel efficient company as a whole.

Whatever. It's not the cleanest, it's the company that's made the largest % reduction. Sorry to rain on the BMW jerkfest.

Anyone remember the forum a few months back that showed Europe's cleanest auto manufacturers. Toyota was #5 eventhough it sold SUVs etc and the others had 1. I remember in that survey, the worst Japanese companies still did better than BMW.

BMW only looks good because they've been so bad for so long.

What is it with BMW? It's either their diesels are too dirty for North America or their gasoline cars are too dirty for Australia.

"BMW only looks good because they've been so bad for so long."

Pfft whatever, you continue to spew more garbage, even though BMW's engines have been some of the most efficient for their displacment for a long long time. Of course Toyota have lower CO2 emmisions in Europe, they have cars like the 1.0 litre Yaris and Aygo. I don't see that many Toyota SUV's over here either, its their smaller cars that prove much more popular.

So much for unbiased reporting. This website is purely focused on advertising all BMW. Who is the cleanest, who is the fastest, who is the .... who gives a @#$%!

Shouldn't an unbiased forum focus on providing unbiased reporting rather than dressing up news for the sole purpose of promoting childish flame wars between car fans.

So much for taking the advise of its users to update its image. This website has great potential but i only see it going downhill due to its uncontrolled biased reporting and control over user material.

This article was from carsguide.news.com.au.

AutoSpies do not make the news- they simply report it. If Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Lexus or Infiniti had gotten this accolade, it probably would have been posted.
