Can You Smell A Recall Here Or Just Bad Luck?
Oh here is the story:

Yep it was just sitting in the parking lot at work and caught on fire. I am still at work and the car is at the dealer. Dunno what is going to happen right now besides the VW people are coming to look at it soon. It had been sitting idle for over 6 hours when it happened. This Sucks.

Having a similar experience in the past it makes me wonder if we can you smell a recall coming or was this just bad luck?

Looks like a new series GTI "R-32". By the tags, looks to have happened in Germany.

Maybe that's why VWoAmerica is not selling the R-32 here?

I don't think there are 'lemon laws' in Germany - hope the poor guy gets made whole.

they probably don't, but just so you know, the R-32 has been in Europe since 04-05

I had a 1972 Imperial in the old days which I sold to a friend after driving it for only 20,000 miles. One day, the wiring in the door caught fire and my friend was able to put out the fire and get it fixed. It turned out to be a rare isolated incident. I doubt this needs a full recall.

Nasty, my parents have had two Golf's over the last 3 years, hope this doesn't happen one day while they are in the car. :S

You've just added more reasoning to why I will never own a VW. My gf's 2000 Cabrio GLX had ridiculous electrical glitches, her TB was shot at 40,000 miles and under warranty but would have been $2,0000 to replace. Her power top had a hydraulic issue which VW told her to keep a bottle in the trunk and just top it off every now and then for a solution. The car would turn on, she would try the wipers, A/C, radio, nothing worked. When she turned the headlights on, all the equipment she played with turned on all at once. VW claimed it was not an issue. Then her A/C light on the switch, not the light at night, but the little light that comes on with the A/C was out. VW had it for an entire day and told her it was fine, only to find out they were looking at the wrong light. The switch was replaced a total of two times because it kept breaking.

Finally two days before we turned her car in as a trade in for her Jeep Liberty Renegade, the check engine light came on. VW wants $80 to reset it. I promptly told them to go **** themselves, took her car home, pulled the gauges out and removed the light bulb.

My brother had an 03 Jetta GLS 1.8T who had to have his wheel bearings replaced at only 30,000 miles.

So as far as I am concerned VW's are horrible.

I said sometime ago about 4 VW fire incidents in a month happened here in Duabi.

and now this and other few stories.

I can't believe VWs are this unreliable.

Yep, after further inspection they discovered the fault...It was VW.

But forget VW, how are things in Dubai? I'll be making my way out there sometime in the future.

at a dealership near me I actually saw a used VW Jetta catch fire. It was parked, not running, right on the lot among a bunch of other cars. Crazy.

I though that too but I think he meant idle as in it was just sitting there not doing anything. Who knows.

Look at it this way: it did not burn his house down by catching on fire inside a garage while everyone was asleep at night... no one got killed: That is what VWoA is really concerned about at the moment...

You guys got to read the whole VW Vortex thread. The guy who owned the car said it was BONE STOCK, no mods. The car was not left idling for 6 hours. He said that the car was left IDLE for 6 hours. The owner clarified his statement noting that the car had been turned off and parked for 6 hours before the fire broke out. There is a claim to 4 other incidents but doesnt seem to be anything to back that up.

Every manufacturer has its own quality problems, some more than others, some more dangerous than others. But VW just seems to have an incredible amount of probems. It is really pretty amazing that people continue to buy VW's considering just how bad they are compared to the compeition and given the fact that they are considerably more expensive vs. the competition.

I think VW's only real selling point is that it is the only Euro manufacturer that sells vehicles within the price range of the average buyer. So for many people who want a Euro car but cannot afford the real deal, they end up with a VW.

Don't shove Audi into this. They don't have this problem--their reliability is far superior to VW's.

S4cabriofoxone- Whatever. The Audi/VW gremlins strike again. It's called Hitler's curse.

I guess the fire extinguisher must have malfunctioned too. Maybe Audi/VW should make halon systems standard on all their cars.

MidEngine - All of the cases that you cited involved "running" vehicles. That means their engines were operating. The VW's were just sitting in the parking lot with no keys in the ignition or anything. Spooky...isn't it?

All wrong. They were filming the latest installment of the Aliens saga. This VW just happened to get to close to the set when they killed off one of the aliens and the acid it has for blood dripped on the windshield and thus this result.

I would be careful when they say the reps are coming out to inspect, what it means is they are looking for a way out of liability, if they suggest they don't know and maybe it is something you did stop talking to them and get a product liablilty lawyer right away?
