Can’t afford the new M3? Consider holding out for the BMW 135i
With an estimated price of $60,000+ (£50,625 in the UK), many of us can just dream of sitting behind the driver seat of the new 2008 BMW M3. It’s gorgeous; it’s fast; and it’s created by BMW’s M division, which is probably one of the best high-performance division of any automaker.

How else can you get 420 horsepower and get to 0-60 mph in 4.8 seconds with an electronically-limited top speed of 155mph? Well, don’t lose hope just yet. In Spring of 2008, BMW will be giving the U.S. the 2008 BMW 1-Series and there is a little secret that not many of us are aware of...

Love the 135i, BMW returning to its roots. Now how do we get them to stop making goofy looking cross-overs?

He should have added "from a heavier car, with less engine displacement"

Lightweight my eye! The 135i weighs 3450lbs, that's only 100lbs less than the 335i. The 135i is just plan ugly to me. Don't get me wrong. When I first read the office release report of the 135i, and others were speculating that it will be around 2900 lbs, I was ready to put the deposit down for the 135i. But after finding out that the car weighs 3450lbs, and will cost $33K or more, I won't be picking one up. There are so many better equipped cars at $33K.

looks much better than the 335i, much cheaper than the 335i, faster than the 335i, so why buy a 335i????

Thats not the official curb weight. Luckily, the weights that have been spreading through the internet are heavy in comparison to other manufactures because BMW adds on some 'bonus' weight. But even if it is only 100 lbs lighter than a 335i, its still going to be a blast to drive.

3450lbs and 33K!?! I def see no point to it then...and lookswise def not even close to being as good as 335i and I can't even decide if it actually looks good!

I dont personally care about badges. I love the technology and comfort in cars. I drive an Accord now & I have to say, I like the 135i and I think it will be a great car to have, but, there is a worth-it price threshold for me for anything I buy and for the 135i it will be $35K, at which price, I want a sunroof also. I can do without navigation. They cannot afford to take away any sales from the 3 Series coupe, so, if the 328 Coupe starts around $35K, this will be about $33K base price and then options....and in all accounts, it will be about 2-3K less than the 328....sort of "give up the space and get more power for the same price" type mentality.
I cannot go over $35K for this car...I dont care how exciting it is to drive.

Yeah I don't know who would pay for a car that's the fastest & most luxurious in it's class. However they really messed up on the taillight design for this car, but you can't deny it's a major bargain for what you get.

The 350Z has the distinction of having the highest accident death rate in the U.S. Too many younger guys buying this car and not being able to handle the speed.
I hate to say it, but I think the 135i will exceed the 350Z in this sad category. Too many young guys not being able to handle the power and speed of this ultra-high performance auto.

The interior on the 1-series is almost nicer than the one in the 3-series.

I've been in the 135i. No it isn't. It's "nice enough" though.

^^Lexus 1st has to come out with a IS coupe...and that is like a few years away. By that time the 135i will get a mid-year refresh and more power. Besides what is Lexus gonna put in a 1 series rival, the wider 3.5 V6 or revive their inline 6 for a narrower car?

everytime i look at the 1 series i am reminded of the e46 3 series but smaller in size. it follows much more closely to the old gen 3 series design than the new 3 series; only smaller. if it were larger, i think it would resemble the older 3 series more than the new 3 series.

it appears that bmw intends to move the new 3 series into a higher scale that competes against the clk and a5 which included the redesign with the 1 series the actual replacement for the older 3 series.
