Can't believe you all missed this! Hyundai bests Lexus in new Comparo!
Say it isn't so!

When I picked up the new issue of Motor Trend last week and I was paging through it, when I came across a comparo between the Lexus RX350 and Hyundai Veracruz SUV's (or are they crossovers now ;).

When to my shock, Motor Trend pick the Veracruz as the winner!

The Hyundai is nice but I have to believe one of their writers let thir emotions get away from them.

What say you?

Do people who shop for a RX actually look at the Hyundai? I helped my mother search for a new car 2 years back (RX330) and her other interested were in the MDX and X5. Must be hyundai's/Ford's commercials comparing themselves to the likes of the LS460, BMW X5, Lexus RX, Land Rover etc. My question is how many of you feel that these commercials are actually effective?

Just because the Veracruz won first place isn't anything but an opinion I'm assuming. And that also doesn't make it the better vehicle all around.

Ha ha ;). But even you will back me up on this one, right S4. I know you're not the biggest Lexus fan but honestly, just because someone thinks that since the Hyundai is cheaper to own/run/etc. doesn't make it the better vehicle. For some maybe, but for others, not so much. Like another comment said, the Hyundai doesn't offer a navigation system, it uses fake wood, and the interior doesn't have the precise detail that a Lexus does. Some people, like this reviewer, think that's fine. I don't however. That's my opinion and I think I have pretty good reasons why.

I dont know about nicer Fabian but some of the models that the hyundai are putting out now, most notably the Sonata, are not bad looking cars in any capacity. I find it, dare I say, quite attractive from the outside. Some of the other cars though, such as the Accent and the Minivan they make aren't the best looking by far in their class.

THERE ISN'T A HUGE CONSPIRACY AGAINST LEXUS!

As stupid as this review is, that is simply why they picked it: value. It's 100% valid.

Now, if I were still looking for a car for my wife (back in 2003), and the Veracruz was out, I wouldn't even have considered it. But I can see what the magazine is doing- they're making a point.

I'd watch my back, Xero, because that's exactly why plenty of Lexus models were chosen over their competitors in the '90s. Don't be surprised if Hyundai gets just as good.

I am not one to stick up for Lexus, but you can't compare a vechicle that is on it's last leg to one that has just came out from a technological point of view. Furthermore who in their write mind will pick a Hyundia over a Lexus. Motor Trend is only comparing based on value and agent001 you are late I read this article like 2 weeks or so ago. Point blank all hyundai does is bite other car designs for example when the redesign Sonata came out it look just like an Accord, Honda had to change their back and now the Accord looks like it rear end was choped with an ax. The new Elantra i believe that is their subcompact looks like a blend of a Civic and Carolla, study it if you guys don't believe me.

Remember when German cars did not have cup holders? Germans did not need to carry stale liquid refreshment distractions everywhere they went. It was all about the driving experience and paying attention to that citroen with goats in the back seat you were going to overtake and miss that oncoming truck closing in on you at over 200kph in the oncoming lane and stuff.

Hyundai owners don't really need NAV systems. They plan their trips and try to have a sense direction in advance and adapt to the driving situation at hand because road conditions do change. They have a sense of adventure and pride themselves on knowing a little about where they are going. I'm sure Hyundai will start offering NAV systems to make their crossovers sexy to people who really need a NAVDADDY ordering them around.

The Hyundai owner can pay for that next vacation with the money they save on the NAV, and the next vacation or two on the savings they had by NOT buying the lexus. And nobody will steal it cause it's not a lexus.

I'm pretty sure the Toyota Camry is the highest vehicle on the list in terms of theft frequency.

People don't care about a badge when they're stealing a car- it's about just having wheels. It's also convenient to choose a less-expensive vehicle, because they normally don't have sophisticated security systems.

Not that I'm a car thief...

Toyota went through the same thing back in the day when people didn't think the Japanese could build a car better than a Gremlin, let alone a Cadillac. At the time they were correct. However time doesn't stand still and Toyota worked at it, and now they build some of the best vehicles in the world. In 1986 when Hyundai hit the streets of the US they were dogs. I should know, I had a 1987 Excel. Over time they have worked on their game and are showing tremendous improvements. As the owner of a 2002 Corolla I will also say this. Toyota is slipping. If this is the best Toyota can offer to the compact arena, then it's no wonder Hyundai is able to pull off wins like this. And to be honest, the fact that Hyundai is catching up only means better for all of us in the future. The Toyotas and the Hondas out there will now have to give us more for our money. I think they have been robbing us for long enough.

As far as nav systems go the truth is that many factory systems are not as good as the aftermarket ones and what GM recently found is that very few people continue to subscribe to the likes of OnStar after the free period is up. I say give me RX luxury for Corolla money and keep the damn nav system.

One last note. Whoever beleives that Lexus uses real wood in all their cars is sadly mistaken. Everybody uses "fake" wood. My Corolla has it as well. Let's be mature people. Because Motor Trend named a Hyundai as the winner of a road comparison it's a BS magazine? RUBBISH! Motor Trend is the most respected automotive magazine in North America. "Car Of The Year" title and that trophy is highly coveted to this day. Bear that in mind.

Lexus uses real wood. There may be one piece of fake wood in my wife's RX, but it's largely real. All first-tier luxury brands (Audi, BMW, Jaguar, Lexus, Mercedes-Benz) use real wood trim.

Why would a Toyota Corolla have wood trim? That would be ridiculous. You say "My Corolla..." as if it's a luxobarge with all the latest technologies.

In terms of wood, Lexus has come a long way. They started out with just pure plastic but current generations have genuine wood (thin folie layer is added to big piece of black plastic and sealed) , although not on all places. The woodtrim on the doors and in the back is still faux-wood. With the exception of the LS. I hope at least.

That's the stupidest comparo ever.

You don't compare a non-luxury car with a luxury car. The Veracruz is larger than the RX350 and has 3 rows...I don't see how they match up. It's like comparing a Nissan Sentra SE-R to a Lexus IS250...yea they may be similar in size and power and saying the Sentra wins cuz its cheaper...wth?

The Veracruz competes with the Highlander and Pilot and GM Quadruplet Crossovers. Hyundai wishes their models would be cross-shopped with a Lexus...if someone is doing that, then they don't deserve a Lexus.

Should've been compard to a Highlander or V6 RAV4. No one will ever cross shop a Lexus w/ a Hyundai.

Here's the actual stats.
http://www.garyromehyundai.com/veracruzvsrx350.cfm
Lexus won in 0-60 (big deal). Surprisingly the Veracruz won in MT mileage.
Look at the prices though, the gap grew once you started adding options, and this wasn't even the top line RX400h while the Veracruz was the top line LTD trim level.
But do compare the interiors, the comparison did. They also mentioned the RX has more features not even available on the Veracruz (i.e. knee airbags, NAV, adaptive HID). Personally, I think it has no place in a car, but real vs. plastic wood.

The Hyundai has great build quality and reliability, but it all comes at the expense of luxury features, and dare I say it, brand cache. Yes, Lexus was once where Hyundai was, but the difference here is that Hyundai is not a luxury brand. I must say though that their ad campaigns are brilliant, for sake of trying to elevate Hyundai name.

And people, if Hyundai "beats Lexus," then by default they surpass BMW and Mercedes. THAT'S what you should be worried about, not trying to make Lexus look bad.

Maybe in your world of "magic" Lexus isn't better, or at least equally matched with BMW and Mercedes with luxury and refinement, but here in reality, they are. What are you "car enthusiasts" demanding from BMW? Certainly not refinement, or a decent interior, just handling huh? And yet over half, if not all of you have admitted you don't take your cars to racetracks regularly, where BMW's handling makes the most sense. Don't be mad that Hyundai's luxury brand will only further expose the Germans (BMW, specifically) for the subpar products they make, just as Lexus has done.

Formula 1, I'm not going to say that Lexus is better than BMW or Merc because that could be pushing it but saying that the 3 series interior is "Way better" (nice english by the way) than the Lexus IS interior is definitely a stretch. The interior of the 3 w/out I-drive isn't that attractive at all. The interior of the IS, even without the nav, provides for a very relaxing environment. Thats not to say that the 3 series interior does not have top notch quality when the leatherette is swapped out for real leather but I personally prefer the interior of the IS to the 3. And I dont see why a car enthusiast can't like the IS. Its a nice car and to say that the IS is the antithesis of the BMW b/c the beamer is the one and only choice for auto enthusiast is a very narrrow minded and ignorant viewpoint. Please realize that the BMW may be perfect for you and not others. Possibly you'll avoid sounding so ignorant. Speaking of auto enthusiast, let me let you in on a little observation of mine. Almost daily on the highway I see several BMW (3 series, 5 series, even M5's and 6 series) on the left lane driving about 5 to 10 MPH slower than the posted speed limit. If you need me to explain what my point is in saying that, i will be happy to break it down for you.

Again, I end by saying...Ignorance is Bliss
