Can you guess the best-selling luxury cars?
Visitors to BMW’s Web site might be surprised to see how outdated some of the models in the company’s high-volume 3 Series range look. That’s because, though the automaker started selling a new-generation, overhauled 3 Series sedan a year and a half ago, 3 Series convertible, hot-rod M3 coupe and convertible models are several years old. I saw the brand new 335i coupe that was driven by a person that could really care less about 300 horsepower under hood or great handling. That said person drove the 335i as if it was a Toyota Corolla, that said person only bought the 335i for a the "image factor" and not the driving dynamics.

The RX is an entry level luxury vehicle.

What? Are BMW fans afraid of knowing who is actually buying the 3 series?

cadillac hit homerun with its escalade it is impressive in person. BMW 3 series wow, for a entry level auto, is one the best cars in the world a great value. "funny thing germannut and other audi fans claim that some article states that audi customers have more education and money than your average BMW customer" not that it matters to me, but how can audi have such wealth, when they do not have a car on this list, In America the richest country in the world home to most the worlds great colleges, yet Audi is the 9th rated luxury brand in the USA, in terms of sales, popularity, and reputation. I know Audi does well in China but the average salary in China is $1.50 a day. Futhermore what do these rich audi customers buy, the R8 goes on sales in the fall of 2007, Audi sells only 20,000 a8 per year vs. 50,000 7 series and 80,000 s-classes. one thing about Autospies you don't catch BMW and Mercedes fans posting lies.

Best-selling luxury cars = new cars. Once the novelty/newness of a vehicle wears off, people flock elsewhere. Nobody wants to look like they have an old car and therefore the worste time to purchase a vehicle seems to be the year before they re-design it. One would think that the owners of the 330i sedans who purchased last year are kicking themselves for not waiting until the 335i came out offering more juice under the hood. But they look identical (minus badging) so they still sell.

The Lexus is still the second-worst selling car in its segment.

In order, 3 Series, A4, C-Class (I think), TL, S60 and 9-3 all sell better.

well, when your previous car only sold 11k units in a year you really don't have anywhere to go but up. Any increase would be a huge percentage jump when you're starting that low. The new IS has been a success but those numbers reflect more that the old IS was crap than that the new one is a world beater.

What surprised me was the 5-series. I knew they were selling but I didn't know they were selling that much. Not only did it outsell the E-class, A6, and GS but it outsold the IS and its 332% increase too.

IS250/350 November sales were down by -19.1 pct !!!

Mind that new IS came to showrooms in October 2006, so November 2005 vs November 2006 are the first comparable months (new IS vs new IS month-to-month sales).

IS is going by GS steps: sales decreasing. An so until facelift, or coupe / cabrio will be introduced.

Note that performance models add only a few hundreds units to monthly sales (max 10 pct).

Look at Toyota / lexus November 2006 sales report:

BMW's brand image (3 Series) is tied tightly to innovation. The BMW 3 series has really captured the performance space in the market for themselves. They own it, BMW's sportiness and style has converted many drivers. To many drivers BMW's are hipper and cooler. Even rivals get the point. Hence Lexus, Infiniti and many others. I have to give BMW credit for consistency in their message, the engine and styling variations offered by BMW are unrivaled.

Of course, Lexus is not about to concede. Neither is Mercedes. I think that's why Mercedes' Stuttgart designers gave the E-Class a sportier line, shooting for the more dynamic brand image that BMW has played to their advantage. Then there's Audi, which aims to make its cars even more fun than Bimmers, and a whole new generation of models at Cadillac. BMW has definitely created an snowball effect through-out the auto industry. And it all began with the 3 Series.
