I hooked up my accelerator to my brake lights. I hit the gas, people behind me stop, and I'm gone.

Cars Left Running Will Now be Ticketed
Police are writing tickets to people who leave their car running and unattended even if the car is parked in their own driveway. The first state police to start the ticketing of running and unattended vehicles is Washington in the city of Kennewick. Stolen cars cost the police time and money that they rather spent protecting and serving other important cases. So if you leave your car running in your driveway, expect a $66 ticket. if you leave it running in public some where, get ready to cash out $101. Read Article

I think yes, in theory it is a good idea. Yes, cars do get stolen while they are sitting in a persons driveway, running or not. It's more likely they'll steal it faster if the keys are in there. That's the right and a risk the owner takes. That's why we pay insurance.

Now me living in Iowa, where it's cold as cold can be, what are we to do? Sit in a freezing car for 10 mins while it warms up? Granted I have a garage, so it's not as bad as if it were sitting out all night. What's the difference if you have a remote starter on your vehicle? Are they still going to give you a ticket?

When it's not extremely cold, or hot, then people should not leave their vehicle running period.

You do not understand what insurance is all about. No, insurance doesn't give you the right to be less careful with your property. The point of insurance is that other people's money (i.e. premium payments) will compensate you for your losses. Thus if anything you are obliged to be more careful because now other policy holders have a stake in your insured property. Read you policy closely, a condition of receiving insurance coverage is that you take good care of the covered property. If people all thought like you then all our premiums will skyrocket.

It's none of the government's business whether I choose to leave my car running or not. ESPECIALLY when the car is idling on my private property.

Police Power has the right to tell you how to behave with laws even on your private property, it's for the safety of the entire public.

But when you step outside to find it stolen, you would be the First to Call The Police (Set Up by the Government) to report it Stolen and demand it be Found

You know if you have one of these new keyless systems you better start watching your back when in a parking structure all alone; because I think car jackers will be waiting for you to walk up and they will take the keyless card and drive away with your car and cellphone.

you have to be really close for the car to get unlocked. and if they want to car jack you, even if you don't have a keyless system they will steal your car.

I know it doesn't give me the right to be less careful. But by having insurance, it helps if in that small chance that your car gets stolen from your drive way, that you'll be able to receive compensation for said mistake. It'll pry make you more careful next time.

So then what is insurance all about, if you pay and pay and pay, and then if someone hits your car, and your vehicle damages are 70% of what the vehicle is worth, and they don't total it out, b/c it can be fixed? Or finding another way to screw you, like increasing what you pay for a single accident over the past 5 years?

And no, It's not like i go around looking for dumb things to do to collect insurance money, or get in accidents. I've never been in any accident at 23 years old.

the thing is, if the keys are in the ignition, insurers will often not pay out. same as if you leave you keys in the door of your house.

Rupert:

Now what if you get carjacked and the ignition was in the car? My driver got carjacked and I got paid for the loss of the car. They thiefs dropped him off in the cemetary and he had to walk back to my office.

thats where it gets complicated. if you get out of the car willingly (those smash and steal techniques ie one cars hits yours, you get out, they get in yours and drive) thats harder. if you are dragged from the car, it should be easier.
my point was leave your car in your drive running, it gets stolen, its your fault no insurance money.
