Caught In The Wild The 2009 BMW 3-Series Alllroad

Dear 001,

Today as the first shots in the new year I caught BMW 3-Series Crossover.

Since there will be a Allroad model of the brand new Audi A4 it looks like BMW is planning the same for the 3-series. What we can see here is a high-up 330Xd with a Crossover lookalike front bumper. The finish car will most likely get more offroad inspirited side skirts and rear  bumper.

Also notice that the BMW characteristic shark-fin antenna on the roof is missing.

The model will properly come at same time as the 3-series facelift in late 2008.

Thanks!,

RoAnSa

One more example of the Germans copying the Japanese - Subie Outback anyone? They really invented the raised platform wagon...

Now that BMW is bringing it out, they will now define it. BMW will set the benchmark and standard and will be the brand given the credit for the idea according to the german fanboys on this site. BTW, I hate it. Not a big wagon fan. Soccer mom anyone.

uh yeah the AMC Eagle came out before the outback, and it was American, and the EXACT same concept as the outback.....

BMW is not the first. Wouldn't you call Volvo XC70 and previous generation Audi A6 Allroad raised wagons also?

I knew someone would bring up the AMC, so then, BMW copied an American company. Point being the Germans copied and most likely will be credited with a fantastic new segment...

IhavearedS2000, hate BMW much? Geez, so what?!? Car manufacturers copy each other and we move on… BMW doesn’t make SUVs they make SAVs; sure its silly but who cares, that too is a copy of an American Product (Jeep Grand Wagoneer) or is it… Truth is, it doesn’t matter, BMW will probably make one of the better specimens in this new segment that they enter and all future ones for that matter… regardless of who came up with it or who comes up with it first. By the way, your S2000 is part of the quintessential most copied segment ever. Didn’t the British come up with the original sports car/coupe/convertible? Or was it the Germans… who cares, the S2000 is a great car even if the Japanese didn’t come up with the original design layout. i.e. Get Over it… BMW is a great brand as is your beloved Honda.

I actually think most BMW's (and other German car makes) are quite good. I just don't like extreme fanboy mentality and am doing an eye for an eye thing here. How many times have I read on this site that Japanese makes never come up with anything on their own or worthwhile? Too many...just want to share a little perspective.

My point, German car makes get all the prestige/hype when they shouldn't...when Germans copy a good idea, they are refining it. When the Japanese copy a good idea, they have no sense of innovation

Our guess is a new network bus in the car so they can hide all the antennae from this point further...PRAISE THE LORD!!!!!!! I HATE THE SHARKFIN!

sorry, but aside from the bumper refresh that ALL the 3's are getting, the differences between this and the 3-Series wagon that's been out since 2005 are what exactly?

It's like 5 inches higher!

It will probably be a test mule for testing the running gear, not an actual concept or anything.

our passion is cars, isn't perfect that every car makers copy each other. I like the way every one wants to be in every market. It makes so many choice!

By the way, this car seems a very good idea.

Are you sure this isn't just a test-bed for the next X3 platform? I haven't heard about a 3-series allroad.

Audi sold an Allroad version of the A6 a few years ago. The sales were dismal, at least in this country.

Audi, BMW and Mercedes already have car-like SUV models, as well as station wagons with AWD, in several sizes. An Allroad model would simply cannibalize existing sales. Why bother?

Ohh no... Yet another BMW model! You have to wonder if the execs at BMW and Mercedes have bet each other who could include the most models into their line up!

This is very confusing... Will this be the "V3" or 3 xDrive XX or something completely different... Hmm

Huh? I think this is a test bed for the new X3, guys. And there will be no "A4 Allroad"-- just the Q5.

S4, that makes sense. Following along the lines of my earlier comment, an Allroad version of the A4 would simply cannibalize sales from the A4 Avant and Q5.

By the way, do you know the year and month that the new S4 will be available in the American market? And are you sure that the S4 will come with the DSG transmission and twin-turbo V6? (You might recall that I am too tall for the S5 or A5 or A6, I don't need or want the Q7, and I can't afford to lease another A8L. The new A4 is my only hope of getting another Audi when my current lease expires in December 2008.)

the regular A4 comes out 9/08, but the S model may come before that like the A/S5. It is likely to have a TT 3L V6

It may not have DSG, though. It depends on whether BorgWarner (VW's DSG partner) will have developed one that can handle the torque by then. Because, well, you know the new S4 will have a lot of torque. I think we're looking at 330-350hp, and a similar torque rating. I can't wait for it to come out.

However, if the S4 ends up coming out after the normal A4 and you can't wait for it, look for the A4 3.0TDI hitting our shores soon enough. It will give you the performance of the 3.2, or maybe even a bit better, with well over 30MPG. Perhaps 40 or more on the highway, because the heavier Mercedes-Benz E320 Bluetec has achieved this.
