Chevrolet Volt could cost up to $48,000!
In a recent article by BusinessWeek called ‘The road to stronger CAFE standard,’ writer David Kiley got some one-on-one time with two Detroit big shots, Jim Press of Chrysler and our main man Bob Lutz of GM. While Jim Press had something important to say along the lines of “…the Japanese government paid for 100% of the development of the battery and hybrid system that went into the Toyota Prius,” (yes we know that’s pretty big, read the article at BusinessWeek if you care that much about Priuses and Toyota), we were more concerned with Lutz comments on the Volt’s pricetag.
Lutz has already told us that even though the Volt is the next big step for GM, the automaker won’t break even on it for years. But just like us, you’re probably still wondering what the pricetag for the Volt will be...

Lutz doesn't care, this makes his point:
BATTERY-POWERED ELECTRIC CARS ARE WASTEFUL AND EXPENSIVE.
The energy efficiency of internal combustion engines is nowhere NEAR close to its theoretical potential!
The next 50 years will demonstrate that.
By the way, at least Lutz tried. NOBODY ELSE has even tried. Not even Japan/Toyota (hybrids don't cut it -- they don't come close to what the Volt is). Personally, I look forward to the interview where Bob discusses whether the knowledge the automotive trade gained from the Volt project was actually worth the investment.

Wonder why a "Volt-like project" didnt debut with a Cadillac badge first. At least wearing the Cadillac name the pricetag would not be that big of issue... IDK, im just talking sh*t...

Hey LACMAN I was just thinking the same thing. Just call it cadillac and the price will not look bad.
By the way, this rumor about Japan paying for the development of Toyota's hybrid...you know that means that toyota had a jump start not just ahead of the American or Europeans but also Honda and Nissan (nisaan pays toyota for using it's technology in the Altima). That's an unfair advantage considering that the prius has sold more than 900000 units till date!!

The Volt can go join the Segway in the garages of America's richest eco-distraught fruitbags.

At that price I can buy a 10-year old M3 AND pay the gas for it...

i bet this "volt" thing is gonna sell like that chevy SSR disaster when that came out. the SSR, like the Volt, were just too expensive for what they were. i mean , what was so good about the SSR? wow, its a truck that has tons of curves. so what?!
if they could cut the volt's price in half, they'll have a success. btw, its ugly anyways...
