Chrysler Hopes New Blood From Lexus Will Make It "Hip"
Newly private Chrysler LLC has tapped an executive from Toyota Motor Corp.'s Lexus luxury division to refocus its brands and energize its global marketing and advertising efforts.

The appointment of Deborah Wahl Meyer as vice president and chief marketing officer Wednesday marks another move by Cerberus Capital Management to overhaul Chrysler's image and inject new blood into the struggling automaker.

"She's young, she's hip and she's a fast-tracker from Toyota," said Jack Nerad, editorial director for the auto-buying guide Kelley Blue Book. "I think it's a coup for Chrysler to get her."

While Meyer was not directly recruited by new Chrysler CEO Robert Nardelli, he did meet with her after his own surprise hiring was announced Aug. 5.

Sorry still don't believe it. She was probably not there in the beginning hence she came in after Lexus was well established. Today marketing does not make Lexus. Or is that their marketing strategy? No advertisement, make it more exclusive, more elusive and that makes more people crave it. Might work for Lexus but not for Chrysler at this time maybe in 20 years but not now.

You can build the best car ever with very little marketing, all you need to do is spread the word out there about your car, once its out, its the word of mouth that takes the rest, either acknowledge its the best car or not.

Lexus got to where it is today because of what it is, quality and reliability. It wasn't marketing that got it to where it is, only haters would say that.

The "big" 3 spend billions of dollars on marketing, they're still in the mud, why? cause the word of mouth got to the people that they're made of garbage.

So, Chrysler proves its continuous failure day after day, by avoiding the problem and working on stupid things.

Yo may fool few people, but not all, and only by gaining all you survive.

Bugatti Veyron. I've never seen an ad for that, ever.

It would be awfully disturbing if there were a woman actually designing and engineering cars, but this chick's just a marketing exec. Women are actually very good at marketing. Women are better at communicating than men, so they are probably superior marketers.

I must say that while the percentage of women at least at my college (which is strictly engineering and sciences)is about 25%- they are generally just as good as the men. If not better in some cases because they feel as if they have the need to prove it.

In fact, one of my friends who graduated may 2006 had a full ride- tuition, housing, books, and spending money- and it was not because she was a woman, it was because she was brilliant.

It is a fact that Newsweek has reported before, but anymore, AP classes in high school are dominated by women.

Good lord,

The person with the highest I.Q. ever actually recorded is an American woman- Marilyn Vos Savant. Incidentally, I hear all of the retorts to that fact everything from Sidis (who never actually took the I.Q. test) to different scores (which are never substantiated). Her I.Q. was verified by the Mega Society. She is married incidentally, to Dr. Robert Jarvik- the guy in the Cialis commercials.

She IS an abberation in one respect- her profession- she is a writer. Anyone of any real intelligence goes into the technical fields-= just as anyone who graduated from MIT ;)

That is a joke by the way.

I didn't imply that women weren't smart. I wouldn't want a car designed/engineered by a woman because no woman can decide what a man's car should be. I can see women working on chick cars, like the RAV4, CR-V, RX330, etc., but are you seriously telling me that women can design man cars like Escalade, Ferrari, Bentley, etc.? NO! Trucks, big cars, power tools, and guns are all things made for men, by men. Besides, women should master DRIVING cars before they start designing them.

I think you would be entirely surprised by some intelligent women I know - they are not about practicality at all. They desire fast cars with huge engines.

you're comparing production cars to exotics/super-exotics. i don't think anyone at bmw thinks the 335i is an enzo-killer.

Chrysler needs to build much, much better quality cars before they worry about their marketing. Sure Lexus had a good marketing campaign when they started, but they went to unbelievable lengths to offer a product of unmatched quality and refinement when they started in 1989.
Take the esteemed Dodge Viper as an extreme example. No amount of marketing in the world is going to change the fact that the car's low tech OHV V-10 pushrod engine is based on a truck, the engine displaces a huge 8 liters, redline is a mere 5600 rpm, and build quality is not worthy of a car which costs almost 90 grand.
Chrysler should hire someone from Lexus quality control BEFORE they get someone from the marketing department.
Think of it this way. If Hyundai today is still building the same kind of cars they were back in 1990, how far do you think the best marketing will get them???? If Chrysler had excellent quality control before, Mercedes would've profited greatly from the former merger and they would have never sold them off. It doesn't seem like they get the point and now they think a good marketing campaign will bring them back.
GM is perhaps the only domestic car company that seems to realize that build quality needs to be improved if America wants to compete with the Japanese and Germans. That's why the new CTS is looking quite good.

Apparently Chrysler didnt ask for help in developing the new Town & Country minivan. Man is that one Ugly minivan. Looks like the old Chevy Astro with even more fake plastics and such ....

But you must admit they have always pioneered the cool stuff for minivans. They still build a mean van, just not as mean a Kia Sedona/Hyundai Entourage. lol

I think Lexus makes great cars, but I wouldn't call them "hip". Pick up an US weekly and tell me how many celebrities you see getting out of Lexuses.

In the beginning the Infinit Q45 was twice the car the LS 400 was but I think we know where marketing took those two. My opinion but Chrysler is on the cusp of "hip" just refine the powertrains and keep the creativity that brought the 300 (don't just keep knocking off one good idea) and let's agree to never respond to ricemaster again.
