Chrysler has announced the adoption of a range of new fuel-saving technologies to improve mileage rates of its vehicles.

The major news is the development of a family of V6 engines with cylinder deactivation technology, similar to GM’s displacement on demand. This means that three cylinders can be turned off by the engine during low load situations, such as cruising on a highway, thus saving fuel. Associated Press reports that this could improve fuel-economy by 6 to 8%.

I don't trust cylinder deactivation because Chrysler and GM have not proven that their systems are fail-safe. I worry that engine sludge may clog up the hydraulic passages that allow the system to be activted. No wonder Chrysler specifies an unusually light oil for these engines. I worry that if the system fails in a certain way, valves will hit pistons resulting in costly repairs. I believe that Chrysler's response time is around 40 milliseconds and GM's system reacts 6 times slower. At high RPM an engine can turn a few revs in 40 milliseconds. I invite the manufacturers to make full technical disclosure about their cylinder deactivation systems instead of just giving us a bunch of marketing hype.
